I use Avast! Antivirus/Resident Protection/On Access Protection (because it’s free and I’m poor). I’ve always shut it down by right clicking on the System tray Icon and choosing “Stop On Access Protection and Exit”. Now that I have Windows XP however, I see that it is still running when shut down and uses a lot of memory. Running they are: 22,200 K + 7,460 K + 2,352 K + a few more running or not, I think). I think Windows Task Manager calls them ashServ.exe, ashSisp.exe, ashMaiSv.exe . My question is, should I “End Process” them with Windows Task Manager, or use Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services to either disable them or set them to manual?
Or does it not matter or is there an even better way? BTW, “Services” lists only 2 Avast! Services.
Or should I chuck Avast! and use something else?
Thanks,
eskimo

Hmmm...
I believe I already gave you this option.
http://www.fs-gs.com/downloads.htm
It will shut down those services for you and restart them when you exit AH. ...and you can't screw anything up because a reboot will put things back the way they were.

OK, I installed and programmed the program. Very cool.
However, I noticed no improvement in frame rates.
I ran 4 tests:
View: Before / After
Tower no clipboard - 53 / 49
Aerial view straight down on tower – 59 / 59
Auto take off rolling – 35 / 35
Auto take off at 2K – 60 / 59
I’d already disabled a lot of programs as recommended by blackviper. I guess these 12 more didn’t add up to much.
Very cool program though.
Thanks,

Yep,
I had already disabled 20+ using Black Viper, as well. I counted another 18 that I temporarily shutdown with this app. I don't know how much it helps, but it can't hurt. The nice thing is that my Norton AV etc all come back on automatically so I don't forget and check my email without it. glad your frames are doing better. Did you ever check to make sure your CPU isn't underclocked?

Yes, it says:
Computer:
AMD Athlon(tm) Processor
1.40 GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM
That's OK, right?
