Title: one thing i do admire about america...
Post by: Furball on October 16, 2004, 12:16:23 PM
Is the ability to turn every immigrant into a patriot.  Doesn't seem to be the same here, Its almost looked down upon to love England - it seems they are villified as thugs or racists if they fly the flag.  (yes, im looking at it from an extreme perspective i know).

It wasn't that long ago when I saw articles in the news saying folks and agencies were being criticised for displaying a flag. It seems they were concerned about "offending" someone by doing so.

yup, apparently the union jack flag is racist too by some.

i can think of only one private house that i have seen in this country that flies british/english flag outside (not including royal family houses, stately homes etc.)

The only time you will see a St.Georges cross is when England football team play.

On my street of 20 homes, 8 have flags flying regularly and 10 have political yard signs right now (all Kerry, BTW).  I am glad that immigrants become patriots, as well they should.  The danger in the US right now is the illegal aliens, who are NOT patriotic to the US, but fly Mexican flags.  Many of our schools have Mexican flgs displayed here in Austin.  This is a dangerous step, and will lead to balkanisation.

Assimilate or leave; multiculturalism is a liberal code word for "white-guilt".

Who says the Union flag is racist, furball? Seems like you are arguing that it is a common opinion held by many people. I've yet to meet anyone who holds that view.

i said "by some" there was a big thing about it a couple of years ago.  apparently a council decided it did not represent the ethnic minorities in britain and should not be flown.  Sorry i should have made it more clear, in the original post i said :-

Re Multiculturalism, anyone in the UK remember this?

A historic statue of a wild boar is unlikely to return to Derby's Arboretum, because it could offend Muslims living nearby. The Florentine Boar stood in the Derby park from 1840 to 1942, when it was beheaded by flying masonry during an air raid. Derby City Council had hoped to replace the statue with an identical replica when plans for a massive overhaul of the park were first considered a decade ago. But following reservations raised by some people in Normanton about a new boar statue, the authority decided to consult with local community leaders.

At a meeting of the council's minority ethnic communities advisory committee it was recommended that the boar be replaced with something else because of the strength of feeling among nearby residents as pigs are perceived as offensive creatures by many Muslims. Derwent Ward councillor Suman Gupta said, "If the statue of the boar is put back at the Arboretum I have been told that it will not be there the next day, or at least it won't be in the same condition the next day at least. We should not have the boar because it is offensive to some of the groups in the immediate area.".
How crazy is that?? Thankfully it has a happy ending, 2000 local people petitioned for its reinstatement and won, but it was verging on insanity for a while. Not sure exactly how many Muslims were living in Derby in 1840, but not bloody many I'd guess.

The think I admire the most about america is its creative energy.
Certainly it stands alone in the world and maybe the history of the world in that regard.

Not sure if Furball's comments apply to California.  We have more immigrants than anyone, and look at who we elect.

I'm not so sure about all immigrants becoming American patriots Furball. In Denver we have a large hispanic population that is largely Mexican in origin. Many of them participate in traditional Mexican holidays like Cinco de Mayo. Many of them have no intention of becoming US citizens, instead they work here and send cash back to relatives still living in Mexico.

Cinco de Mayo, that reminds me of an incident that happend maybe 15 years ago or so. There was a Cinco de Mayo celebration across the street from the apartment complex I lived in. Many participants of the celebration tryed to park in the parking lots for the apartment complex (private parking for residents only). My girlfriend at the time had to run to the store, while she was gone a Camaro full of Mexicans took her parking spot. When I tryed to politely explain that they were on private property and their car would most likely be towed, I was given a string of expletives and racial slurs that would make the proverbial sailor proud.

I watched the Mexicans until they had entered the celebration, then backed my 3/4 ton pickup up to the Camaro, hooked up my tow rope and proceeded to drag their car out of the parking lot into the street, where I left it blocking the road. Sure enough about 10 minutes later a police car shows up, 15 minutes after that a tow truck showed up and towed the Camaro away.

The look on those Mexicans faces when they came back to get their car was priceless. :rofl
