Title: adding memory
Post by: 63tb on October 17, 2004, 04:36:12 PM
Folks,

I want to add more memory to my PC but how do I find out what type I need? Is there something written on the memory modules that will say what type they are?

I have a EPoX 8KHA+ motherboard. I think I have Mushkin PC2100 DDR memory, but how can I verify this? I also know there are different kinds of memory. Are they all compatible?

thanks

for best performance /less hassles its best to match the memory that you have .  and also check if its dual channel .

just look at your stick and look up its number .

There's an awsome freeware called CPUz that shows everything about your RAM and CPU. Try doing a google search for it.

63tb,

I use that MB in one of my older systems...

You didn't say how much SDRAM is currently installed, which size module(s) you have installed, or which OS you are using.

Win98 will only support 512MB SDRAM reliably on that MB, so if you want more SDRAM you'll need Win2K or WinXP.

Since you are already using PC2100 SDRAM, and PC2100 is the fastest SDRAM supported by that MB, that's what you'll want to add.

Please note that you only have 3 SDRAM slots to work with, and 512MB is the maximum size supported in each slot.

so...

512MB x 3 slots = 1.5GB Max (w/Win2K or WinXP)

In my experience with this MB, the biggest bottleneck to good AH2 performance is the AGP 4x slot. An upgrade to a new AGP 8x MB and AGP 8x video card will do wonders for your AH2 gaming experience.

Good luck and good flying!

Cpta,

I am running win98 and I have 256 mem now. I have a GeForce4 Ti 4200 video card. AH runs pretty well except if there is a lot of planes, I get some stutters. Most of the time I try and avoid the big furballs anyway so it doesn't happen much.
