While the Le Monde poll found that French opinion of the U.S. had deteriorated over the past three years, 72 percent of those polled said they had a favorable opinion of Americans. But only 21 percent had a favorable opinion of Bush.
And Kerry does not look French at all to us ! he looks as WASP as they come !

When Kerry loses the election Bush should appoint him ambassador to France.

At least, and maybe a kiss too. We though y'all snooty French-types liked rudeness and insults! Hell, you should be eternally grateful for the fact that we don't send the Girl Scouts in to conquer you for not backing our play in New Oiltown (formerly Iraq). So get to it, and don't worry about being formal, we'll gladly accept a hand-written Thank You card on one o' them white flags you seem to have lying around everywhere!

The French are "teh suck" but I have to hand it to them on the Millau Viaduct. It's a damn impressive bridge construction job. Saw a show about it on Discovery the other day.

Only because the dead can vote in Dade county :
At least this time the dead will be able to vote legally. Miami-Dade election officials said Monday that anyone who dies between the time they cast an early ballot and Nov. 2 can be assured their vote will still be counted.

I started when we called the brit "rosbif" :)
Seriously I've no idea except we ate frog legs from time to time (but we're not the only eating frogs)
I remember a story saying it was related to about Clovis and the Lys flower but I've doubt it's the real reason.

-
Ah, I should have googled instead of gaggling...
Hello.
There are a number of competing theories on how the "frog" nickname
came to be:
Here are six such theories from the web page "Archived French Frog
Stories":
(1) Many French people enjoy eating frog legs.
(2) Clovis, an early Frankish king, adopted frogs as part of his
emblem.
(3) France's national emblem, the Fleur de Lys, resembles a frog.
(4) England's Queen Elizabeth I had a French suitor whom she
affectionately called her "little frog.""
(5) The lands around Paris were swampy, so the peasants who dwelled
there were called "frogs" by the upper classes.
(6) At one time, French soldiers wore camouflaged uniforms and
resembled frogs.

I keep hearing this charge, but I'm curious; what insults has the current administration thrown France's way, aside from the Rumsfeld remark about "old Europe"? Yes, the American public has a very poor opinion of France at this time (I'd like to see what a US poll would report on US public opinion of France); however, as far as I know, President Bush has been very careful to avoid fueling that flame. Given the public statements by France's head's of state regarding America, Bush has been more polite in his own public statements about France (and Germany and Russia, for that matter). He has steadfastly refused to fan the flames of anti-European sentiment in the USA, even in the face of the Duelfer report and the Oil-for-Food scandal.
So I ask again: What insults (by the Administration)?
P.S. As an engineer myself, I must say that is one impressive bridge.
-
The Freedom Fries circus show ? members of Congress calling the press to show the menu at their cafeteria with the word freedom instead of French on it ?
very useful spin tactic or smokescreen : soundbites on the freedom fries, while the administration was (proven fact) lying through its teeth about Iraq, bin laden ties, WMDs ...
So while O'reilly (who never served a day in the military btw) was gleefully trampling on the graves of those who died bravely at dien bien phu or in 1940, no journalist was investigating the biased half truths of the bush administration.
BTW French Fries are not French, nor is French dressing !
I still have faith the American people and system though, and I 'm proud to call many US citizens my friends (not to mention my girlfriend who's from Seattle!)

In America, I have never one time heard someone use the term "freedom fries"
In France, the government is banned from using the word "email"

email is not banned (even in the governement) it would be wrong especially if you look at the etymology of the word "mail" :)
-
Sabre So I ask again: What insults (by the Administration)?
Spooky The Freedom Fries circus show ? members of Congress calling the press to show the menu at their cafeteria with the word freedom instead of French on it ?
Congress is not part of 'the Administration'. Congress is the legislative branch of our government. The administration is named the "Carter" or "Clinton" or "Reagan" or "Bush" administration because it is a synonym for the executive branch.
Oddly enough, Bill O'Reilly is not even part of the administration.
Sabre's question remains unanswered.
-
It's answered Holden , the average frog don't make a distingo between the congress and the administration.
I should remember you that for French people there is yankees and cowboys everywhere in the USA from East to West and North to South :p
-
Straffo, interesting. It reveals how little you understand our form of government. The President does not speak for the Congress, or vice versus. So basically, you and France's animosity towards Bush is based completely on your governments disagreement over the war in Iraq, and not really on any actual insults by him or his adminstration (which does not include Congress). Why then do you and other French people (including Chiraq) continue to propagate this myth that Bush insults France and is anti-French?
Another point: Since the make-up of Congress is unlikely to change in the next election, and is split almost evenly between the Democrats (Kerry's party) and Republicans (Bush's part), it should, in theory, make no difference to you (or the rest of France) who wins our election. The polls that show French prefer Kerry to Bush, in other words, rests solely on your countrymen's ignorance of our form of government, no? Thanks for clearing that up.

Simplification ,exactly like you when you think Chirac propagate this myth*.I bet you don't know the name of the French prime minister without googling it:).
Remember we see the USA from the outside ,and we have a pretty small knowledge of the inner working of your governement, the most visible to us is Bush (afterall he represent the USA).
Plus we use analogy to our form of governement where the president is the head of the state and also the head of the majority (we don't have a system like the primary in France) and so anyone speaking in the UMP is speaking in the name of Chiraq.
So for us a republican speak for Bush.
According to this :
Chiraq == France == UMP
and
Bush == USA == Republican

I don't think there where will be a difference for us whatever the people of the US elect in november.
I personnaly don't care who will be president ,it's just that Bush for is the icon of the animosity between American and French people ,it's more a symbol than anything else.
* it's wrong btw I don't remember of any Anti-Bush/anti-American speech made by Chiraq.

The French like Jerry Lewis and John Kerry.
Both humorous clowns, but no longer amusing.
A French endorsement in the USA is probably just slightly above an endoresement from Saddam Hussein himself.
Remember when we couldn't fly the F111s over France during Desert Storm to help get Iraq out of Kuwait? I do. Forced the pilots to add hours of flight time to an already long mission.

Well think about it, Dago. They have the highest population of Muslims of all Western Europe. They're already surrendering to the influx of immigration by refusing to help "The West". :) (I don't consider the Gov't of France to be part of "The West" anymore)
It won't be long before terrorists blow up a train in France, demand head scarfs be allowed in school, and the French Gov't will give in to its demands.

So it is not Bush your country dislikes, but America herself. Got it. So why then do polls in your country say they prefer Kerry over Bush by 75%?
Simplification ,exactly like you when you think Chirac propagate this myth*. I bet you don't know the name of the French prime minister without googling it.
First, you would be wrong about the Google search, but then I suspect the line was meant to intentionally belittle me. I know very well who Chirac is (though I am guilty of mispelling his name, so sorry). I forgive you the intended slight, since you've already admitted your nation's animosity towards our President is based solely on your countrymen's ignorance of our government's structure. You are however correct in pointing out that Chirac himself has not publically insulted our President, at least so far as I was able to determine. My bad. It is not, in fact, Bush that Chirac dislikes, but America herself. Or perhaps it is fear or envy...hard to say. I draw that conclusion from statements such as this:
Chirac lashes out against US cultural domination
Thu Oct 07 2004 21:37:42 ET
French President Jacques Chirac warned Thursday of a "catastrophe" for global diversity if the United States' cultural hegemony goes unchallenged.
Speaking at a French cultural center in Hanoi ahead of Friday's opening of a summit of European and Asian leaders, Chirac said France was right to stand up for cultural and linguistic diversity.
The outspoken French president warned that the world's different cultures could be "choked" by US values.
This, he said, would lead to a "general world sub-culture" based around the English language, which would be "a real ecological catastrophe". Sabre's comment>
Citing Hollywood's stranglehold over the film industry as an example, Chirac stressed that only with government assistance could countries maintain their cultural heritage.
Vietnam is a former French colony, but only around 375,000 of its 81 million people speak French. English is considered by most people a far more valuable and practical second language, particularly among businessmen.

Sabre I don't know how you come to this conclusion reading my post.
Btw I didn't tried to belittle you ... the other half of my sentence is still stuck somewhere (it happen when you do 2 task in the same time :D)
The Chirac's quote should please the American hating hollyweird :)
And btw I agree with him I think protecting our culture is also protecting our values and should be enforced in the name of diversity.
Now I'll have a rest and come back later.

For what it's worth I always thought that raid was justified and I remember writing a letter to my congressman stating I was outraged that president Mitterand denied overflight to the F111s.
I agree Americans should resent it.
My position on Iraq is slightly different, and even though I question the Bush administration motives , I still have respect for those in the line of fire, then(1986), and now.
