Title: Performance with damage question
Post by: frank3 on October 24, 2004, 06:43:05 AM
Does the performance of a plane decrease when you're damaged? For instance, landing gear, rudder, elevator etc. damaged.

Apparently if a plane loses a wingtip it only gets faster...

frank3 - have you really never lost an elevator or an aileron?

Im talking about speed, ofcourse I have had damage before, but I haven't looked at the speed (was it dropping, and if so, how much)

Im talking about loosing a wing or engine....................... ..................

Lose an engine in a P-38 and you will definately get much slower. Lose an engine in a P-47 and you will get real slow ... real fast.

Im sorry, it should be:      'Im not talking about...'

But when you loose a gear or rudder, will you loose speed or anything?

I was in a fight at about 22k in my 109F against a Spit9 I think. Anyway I lost an elevator. Didn't notice if I got slower or not, but did notice some severe handeling problems. Shortly after that I lost my left wingtip. Within a few seconds i was doing about 520 mph.

2 Seconds later I hit the ground ;)

I suppose loss of a wingtip means less lift, and less lift means less drag.  An airplane with no wings at all with the engine still running will go very, very fast (until it hits the ground.)

I think hes wondering if there is increased drag or vice/versa from battle damage -i.e. If I have bullet holes in  my wing will it slow me down because of the airflow being disturbed, type of thing

I seem to remember HT mentioning something about this when AH2 was still in dev.  However, I also remember HT mentioning something about bullet holes appearing where you got hit during the dev of AH2 and I havn't seen that yet........bullet holes appear generically on my FE.

Don't know.  Here's hoping HT comments.

Actually I think bullet holes do appear roughly where your hit...guessing they are "preloaded" and you get closest one.

Bullet holes do appear, go into the TA and have someone M16 you all around.

I lost both wing tips in a f4u once and out ran an la7. Missing parts will speed you up, but not much if that change isn't symmetrical.

Loosing wingtips makes you faster

Rip off your landing gear and there is no performace loss. Loss of the entire main gears (especially fully enclosed when retracted types) should put a huge drag factor on the airframe and cause a lot of speed loss.

Also asked for several times is loss of output engine power when it is damaged (not the current instant dead engine effect). Like if the oil is hit, the engine begins to loose power gradually, rather than running at full power until the oil is gone.
