Title: Canadian Football???
Post by: aSTAR on October 24, 2004, 10:10:25 AM
Been watching some of their games & the attendance at the games. 3 downs with a lot of passing, but to me it seemed to lack the quality of proffesional football players? The attendance looked like 75% or less.
If the winners of the Grey Cup and the Super Bowl Champs were to play off with 30 min. Canadian rules and 30 min. NFL rules, I wonder what the out come would be
Someone mentioned to me you could take any one of the TOP 10 College teams and they would win over the Grey Cup Champs?
Super Bowl is said to be the World Champions, do they play any other Champions from other Nations?
Would like to hear from the experts or football fans.

Doug Fluttie played almost his entire carrear in Canada and went to Buffalo when he was past his prime. He still managed to get the Bills to the Superbowl twice despite the fact that he had no respect from the owners and was only started when the season looked like a lost cause.

In Canada he was good but not outstanding above the rest of the league.

It is a different game. The pay is much less so you have a different calibre of player to some extent. However the game is different and to say US collage teams would win in the CFL is probably a bit stupid.

I roomed with a guy who was an all Canadian at my University the years they won the university cup. He went to a bunch of CFL training camps and never even got on the field. Another player from my university was drafted first round in the NFL. He started for 10 years.

Point is at that level the best players in the world are not that much better than guys who can't even make the team. They are better but they are all great to some extent.

Just look at the US basketball team at the Olympics this year. The teams that beat them were mostly guys who were not "good" enough for the NBA. On paper it should have been a cakewalk.

The CFL is an very entertaining game to watch. However if you have no attachment to the players or the teams you probably will not enjoy it as much as watching a league were you know all about the teams and their players.

How would the results be if Super Bowl winners & the Grey Cup winners were to play off, 50 / 50 on the rules?
Were the basketball players in the Olympics pros or amitures?
I think they were non professionals, correct?
Thanks again for the input Habu.

I found the three down rule to be a pita, in school we played by NFL rules, otherwize it would just be a punting match. Also you're talking about a country that has one tenth the population of another, less of a talent pool to draw from.

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGOOO OOOOOSSSSSSSS, yawn.

I think that most of the USA Team all played pro ball, in not all of them.

Not to nitpick, but Flutie got them to the playoffs, not the Super Bowl.  Warren Moon played in the CFL too.  So have may good players.  However, the talent in the NFL would be too much.  (I'd watch CFL if it was readily available here.  I like some of the differences.)

Another question:  how do our European members feel about NFL Europe?  I understand it does well in Germany but nowhere else.

CFL is a great game marred by stupid rules that limit "import players"...Eg..American NFL rejects.

I would rather see quality athletes than Canadian content...Same with the music industry...Anything that regulates talent hurts the industry more than it helps in the long run.

BTW...No CFL team could compete against the worst NFL team..in any version of the game.

"Bills to the Superbowl twice"
did he do it in an avro arrow?

The best team you could make out of the best foot ball players to ever play in Canada would be a 21 point underdog against a typical Superbowl wining team.

What are the rules differences and how did they develop?

3 downs.
Field is 110 yards long.
End zone is way deeper
End zone is deeper so you can score with 3 downs.

neat rules like this

"Article 8: Crowd Noise
The Team A captain may request the referee to stop the game if excessive crowd noise prevents Team A from putting the ball into play. The referee may permit Team A to return to its huddle. The referee shall allow reasonable time but under no circumstances shall the play be delayed more than three times.
In the event that the home team permits in its stadium the use of either electronic equipment or high volume loudspeakers when the visiting team is attempting to put the ball in play, with the result that the game is delayed, the home team shall be subject to penalty for delay of game.
Penalty: L10"

3 downs gives special team a bigger role in the game.

The CFL players are not as good as the NFL ones that's for sure but the game is great fun.

Doug Flutie was incredible in the CFL. Won two Grey Cups.
One of 2 QB to pass for 6000 yards in a season.

Just this week the quaterback of Calgary threw a pass that was caught and the receiver punted the ball that was then recovered by one of his teammate, who was behing him when he punted, and he scored a TD. But unfortunatly the ref didn't seem to know they had the right to do that. :(

Also if the punter is first to take the ball after the punt it's a TO. :D
