Hi GA,
 I'm sure some will say you can get lower but... I've always considered 800ft AGL to be the safe minimum (AGL - Above Ground Level, so if the field etc is at 1,500ft you need to be at 2,300ft).

You can test this yourself by dropping a goon and see if it lives   haha.

I was able to drop a goon at 600ft and it lived, but it died when I dropped it at 500ft.

But I would go with Snafu number of +800ft to be sure they all live.
