Air Force Announces Exercise Using F-16 Simulator With Lasers
Defense Daily   10/26/04

A computerized wargame set for next week will feature simulate laser cannons on F-16 aircraft, allowing pilots to test how the future weapons might be used in battle, according to the Air Force.

The exercise, called Advanced Concepts Event, will take place at Kirtland AFB, N.M., the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) said yesterday. F-16 pilots will use the new laser-armed fighter simulator to prepare for future combat operations, when such lasers might actually be used. Lockheed Martin [LMT] builds the F- 16.

The High Energy Laser (HEL) fighter has been an ongoing project at AFRL. "We started this effort nearly four years ago," Rudy Martinez, the HEL Fighter project officer at the lab's Directed Energy Directorate, said in a statement yesterday. "We wanted to merge an F-16 simulator with a laser weapon system so that a pilot could blend flying experience with the skills needed to operate a revolutionary speed-of-light weapon."

The simulator is designed to train pilots using some of the unique capabilities laser weapons offer. For example, the laser is mounted on a turret beneath the plane, allowing pilots more flexibility in maneuvering to strike another aircraft compared to current weapons.

The advantage of laser weapons--though still a way's off--are many. A laser can be targeted more precisely. For example, a laser can be focused on a particular area of the target aircraft, like engines or fuel tanks.

While the simulation technology is already here, the laser weapons themselves are still under development. "Needed, and under development, are solid-state lasers in the 100,000-watt range and compact electrical sources that can power high-energy laser weapons," AFRL said.

Just focus the laser on the pilot of the enemy plane.

I guess the real thing is still under flight testing?  :p

(Couple of the guys in our R2Builders Group bought this XWing from FAO Schwartz when they went bankrupt.  Only 2 or so around, they own one, Lucasfilm is paying a fanclub to restore another one.  80% scale from what Im told.  They did quite a bit of restoration to make it safe to display...this photo taken when they had it at a Star Wars event in Texas earlier this month.)

Just give our pilots those little key chains.

Hell no here is the specs on an X-Wing

Wingspan- 7 meters
Length- 12.5 meters (nose to engine block)
Height- 4 meters
Powerplant- Four sublight ion engines equipped with hyperdrives for light speed travel.
Speed-maximum- 186,000 miles per second normal cruise- sublight
Ceiling- Not a factor
Crew- Pilot in cockpit and recesses socket behind cockpit designed as interface for an R2 astromech droid
Armament- Four wing-tip laser cannon plus limited supply of proton torpedoes.

If you think that's nutty, you should see the folks who built a fullsize Millenium Falcon

:rofl :rofl :rofl  now there is alot of misplaced sexual energy. i wonder how much one of those sells for. i could prolly build one out of wood (mostly) for about $2500 for materials. opening canopy and cockpit would be extra. if i can build a boat that floats, i can build an x-wing prop.:aok

Lacks surface detail and the waist gunner positions.  What's up with that? Han Solo would not approve.
