Charon, you sure about that being a .50?
I didn't know that they used water cooled .50's

That's a hell of a shot Milo. Was that when they were scuttling her, the battle or the sub? My guess would be scuttling.

The torpedo hit.

There was four fired. One missed, one hit the destroyer along side and the other 2 hit the Yorktown. (according to the caption)

The sad thing is that you know there are guys in that area when she was hit, killing a bunch of them. :(

I might have been a little hasty with the torpedo hit. From the above sit, it seems that it is a  diorama by Norman Bel Geddes.

Image source indicates that this shot was taken during the Midway operation, theirfore it must be a F4F-4.
