I'm gonna have to agree with GS on this one, but not for the same reasons he believes. Our greatest threat is indeed an internal one.

On 9-11, we said "didn't see that comming." We shouldn't say that again. We have a problem. We're a consumer society used to consuming the majority of the world's resources. All of a sudden another big fish has been thrown into the bowl and its hungry. So in a few years do we say "didn't see that comming" ?

>>The notion that there is a limited amount of wealth on this planet, and that "if another country wants more we will get less" is a fallacy.<<
I forgot the world had infinite resources and the ability to infinitely replace them and man's infinite ability to harvest them.
To hell with supply and demand, with such infinity, there should be no demand.

Economically China is a threat. OR at least a future threat.
One could look at it that way.
Could also look at it as a potential future customer.

I'd disagree with that. China will do what it has in the past: purchase some items from America, then get their own scientists to duplicate it and sell it much cheaper in their own country.

Why not mention a military threat. Face it if China wanted to occupy a good portion of the globe it definatly has the manpower to do so.
First they start with Korea....using slave labor and world class ship yards they convert a bunch of super tankers into carriers and troop landing ships.
Europe imediatley starts to apease them giving them recouces and money. Then the middle east.
It wouldn't be hard for them to seriously wreak financial havoc in the US.
It may sound far feched but what isn't far feched these days. I havnt actually checked this fact but I've heard over and over that they have more soldiers in their army than we have bullets in ours. Technology only goes so far when it comes to numbers and they've closed the technology gap big time in the last 10 to 15 years.
China truely is the sleeping dragon. I'd hate to be around when it gets poked with a stick.

Yeah, they raped small town America and moved on to bigger fish. Remember the "Buy American" campaign they pushed in the early days? The commercials of "We saved 67 jobs in Meridian, Miss because we won't buy toasters from China!" Cut prices, force the competetion out of buisness then gradually jack up the price while switching to cheap imports. The only time I shop there is to make them price match cheaper compeditors, which is easy to do. Deeth to WalMart.

I think I read China has one of the highest military budgets in the world, but more so all their newer military systems are maturing and apporaching their prime operational periods, whereas many western powers militaries are reaching block obsolescence.
Thier numbers maybe large but generally large whole scale conscript armies are next to useless in modern warfare, and their ability to supply a massive large scale offensive at length from their supply centres would be an interesting subject.
Whether your actually serious about china being a threat is tempered with your stupid comments about European appeasement, but I see China as a very serious threat (especially if hardliners reign in it's even slight reform) to it's regional neighbours, for even now China's newly aquired backfire bombers can reach our shores unrefuelled, whilst we have no real air superiority aircraft now or in the future (F-35 JSF bah!) and the lead in time for our new Aegis type air warfare destroyers is measured in years.

We are own best friend and, at the same time, our own undoing. everything is in our hands, for better or worse. Everything is in our hands, for rational or irrational. Most important of all, everything is in our hands, for our future or for the lack thereof.
I love this country as much as anyone, in fact, having been born elsewhere, I love it even moreso... It is up to us to not allow it to pass into the historybooks, my friends. It is up to us to work for a future where America can live on to benefit more generations to come.

No, seriously. Americans.
A military conquest of a nation as big as the USA is a practical impossibility. The only option would be nuclear, and that would be a suicide pact.
The only way the USA can be "defeated" is economically, and that's only going to happen if you Americans allow it. Whether your economy is indeed making an opening for such an "attack" is debatable, but just the fact that it is debatable is worryingly enough.
I disagree! Big time! Read Tsun Tzu, in particular the section on espionage and subversion. Then look more closely at the last 50 years.
Here cause most people don't even know this exists................
"The direct tactic of war is necessary only on the battlefield, but only the indirect tactic can lead
to a real and lasting victory.
Subvert anything of value in the enemy's country. Implicate the emissaries of the major powers
in criminal undertakings; undermine their position and destroy their reputation in other ways as well; and
expose them to the public ridicule of their fellow citizens.
Do not shun the aid of even the lowest and the most despicable people. Disrupt the work of
their government with every means you can.
Spread disunity and dispute among the citizens of the enemy's country. Turn the young against
the old. Use every means to destroy their arms, their supplies, and the discipline of the enemy's forces.
Debase old traditions and accepted gods. Be generous with promises and rewards to purchase
intelligence and accomplices. Send out your secret agents in all directions. Do not skimp with money
or with promises, for they yield a high return."
OK...... The above section was/is required reading for their military/government personal.
Wait you say military so you are refering to an actual invasion right? OK then I think to a degree we are in agreement. IMHO we are being defeated as we speak.
Further, during the Klinton administration.....
A Naval base that was slated for closer in San Diego CA. was leased/given to the Peoples Republic of China and is now considered Chinese Soil.
A PRC General, who is now a business person?, had a coffee with Bill not too long before this.
There is allot more of such info out there. No one seems to want to pay attention.
Moveon.org is financed mainly from/through the communist party of America?
I've found several people, mainly democrats, get very upset when you point out these FACTS. I say facts because the Moveon.org's own site contains, or at least did contain, the information.
I posted this fact on this BBS and got a "so what" type of reply.
Kinda sad cause IMHO so many haven't thought this through very well. They're really convinced, or seem to be, that everything will continue as it is, or even get better. They don't seem to realize there will be some very big changes in their way of life. IMHO only after they expierence those changes will they understand. But by then .... the party will be over.
No I'm not a Republican.

That's nothin really....at least compared to some el savador woman who has to work an extra two hours a day for less pay because some buy from wallmart wants 1000 more britney spears t shirts per week for a dollar cheaper!
EDIT: I belive the "buy american" campaign was before sam walton died. after that it went all down hill from there. Home Depot ( a store I love) isnt too far behind them.

To answer this you have to define what you mean by threat to the US.
Is the threat one of military conquest, economic persuasion, political collapse / persuasion or what?
That determines the scope of the first question asked in the thread. Until then it's way too open ended to really answer with any authority.
Perhaps it needs to be addressed as such in multiple threads, one per question.

Dunno. Just dont see China in a war of aggression.
Had they wanted to they could have along ago. They certainly as you put it have the manpower to do so and loosing a few million people would probably be more of a long term benifit to them.

and China is lossing fertile ground by the acres every year, will not be long until China will be dependent on the World for wheat, corn, bread etc etc..........China is drying up into a desert

really?
you must not have a very good notion of how wealth works.
it's not how much money you have. the actual numbers are arbitrary, just a means for keeping score. hell I could take my cash to Canada and have about 30% more dollars. would I be 30% more wealthy?
I make twice as much per hour as my father did, yet he was better off than I am.
the amount of money you have isn't the issue. it's how much more (or less) you have, when compared to others in your economy.
my $40-60k per year just barely gets my family of 5 through a year. but if I moved to some country where average annual income is around $2-300, I could probably be the wealthiest guy around.
wealth is power, you pay people for the services and goods you need. money is just the score card.
wealthier people cost more to hire, and won't sell goods for as cheap a price. why should they? if they aren't in need of the money they can hold out for the price they want.
where poor people are more desperate, when they need money they often need it right away and primarily for goods that are necessary for survival. they don't have near the ability to hold out for a better offer, if they do they might not even be alive when the offer comes up.
you can't have the wealthy without having poor. actually you need a lot more poor people for each wealthy one. for every guy who makes 10 times the average income, you'll have 18 people who make half of the average income.

Don't see China as being agressive but they will certinlly be the worlds next super power. With it's huge economy at 10% growth, population and moving into more and more hi tech goods.
10% growth and thats with stern policies in trying to slow down it's growth rate.
Militarily they are moving away and have been for the last 20 years from obsolete Russian equipment to the latest generation equipment. And from a massive ill equipped army to one that is very well equipped not to mention it's size in personal.
I read recently that by 2015 at the current rate they will have significantly more first line fighters then the US. They are also moving away from a defensive military to a strategic force. With carriers etc in the works. They can certinly afford to do so.
Other interesting point is that they are no way effected by Bush's so called war on terror. Even the Chinese airlines are making good profits now and busy ordering more 777's to fill even more routes being opened up. When the rest of the worlds airlines is busy parking up planes or on the verge of bankruptcy.
China of today is hugely different to that of even just a few years ago. Amazing watching it's accelerated growth, economy and military.

In the next 5 years, China's demand for products will affect whats available to the US and affect the US's standard of living. Believe it or not - I don't care. The interest rates in the US are artificially low and will beome evident in the next 3 years, again believe it or not, I don't care.
China doesn't have to be militarily agressive. They have the fastest growing economy in the modern world.

Too late....nine lawsuits have been filed as of Friday in Florida....all by Democrats....imagine that.
If Kerry wins, no lawsuits....if Bush wins, the skies will be filled with lawyers in lear jets.
It was the Democrats who tried the courts in 2000 first....they made their bed and had to lay in it once the Supreme Court ruled.
