Title: Vulching Redux
Post by: TalonX on November 01, 2004, 09:14:28 AM
This is my favorite discussion...so I like keeping it alive.

Vulching is the fine art of killing an enemy on the runway, usually during take off, but could be landing.

Vulching is villified by some, practiced by many.

My opinion is based, at least partly, on history.   Many planes were shot on the runway, taking off, or landing.  Probably most air to air kills on Me262s were when they were caught low and slow on landing.

I see nothing wrong with vulching.   If you want to upped at a capped base, you deserve what you get, pure and simple.

The notion of chivalrous combat went out in WW1.   Douglas Bader (DFC, etc,  22 kills with no legs) said, "It's not a bloody game of cricket".   What he meant was, it's our job to kill the enemy, not play at sport.

Up a capped field?   Die as expected, but stop crying about it.

i have no problem with vulching.

Ok, Flyboy....I agree.  I never came back and said, "Wow, what a great vulch!".

Now, land a kill against some of the big studs?   That's exciting.

Ok. I'm in...

i) This isn't WWII - and as a game the notion of chivalry, although not apparent, is practiced by a few.

ii) I have nothing against vulching to aid a base capture.

iii) Had a classic couple of weeks ago - after hitting pork targets let a yak get up - gave him a minute to get up to speed, then got stuck into a good knife edge fight.  The bugger owned me - not to mention straffing me after my engine siezed up forcing a ditch.

..... but, I learnt a bit from it - my skills at hitting near stationary targets need no more honing, my ACM does.

Now vulching does take considerable skill to kill the guy upping, avoid hitting the ground, and avoid getting killshootered, avoid the field ack, the manned ack and the GV ack, and then get positioned to do it all over again before the other 25 other pilots from your country get the next guy on the runway :D

The only thing I hate about vulching is that the pilot can't deploy his chute  so that you can kill him again.

HT... please make the vulchee jump out of his burning plane and run like mad to the map room, so that we can chase and strafe him all the way there.

That should make it more satisfying!

And of course we know that when joe blow lands 15 kills in his LA7 that it wasn't through his skill in ACM :)

So if you are vulching to cap a base for capture so be it, but if you are vulching to pad your score, I'm not impressed

And we've all seen the guys who race past their buddies who are involved in the dogfight  near the base, so they can get to the field and hopefully grab some cheap kills of guys taking off and flee.  Meanwhile their buddies in the dogfights are keeping the base defenders occupied and doing all the work

I agree with Talon X on the fine art of Vulching.  I believe the same goes for SPAWN CAMPING.  If you spawn and immediately get killed what does that tell you?  If you have half a brain you'll come back with support or up a bomber and carpet bomb the Spawn Site.  Don't keep spawning and then cry to your suppressor on A Channel.  I'll give ya credit trying to bust a good spawn camp solo but good luck especially when its camped with Tigers. :D

I actually was quite proud of my vultching. As a rook, I witnessed a Knit 110 Vultch a LA5 while taking off - I loosed a rocket and right after the LA5 exploded, it cap'd the 110 in the fuselage and sent me home laughing. That was poetic justice.

I think vulching gets less frequent with experience. It doesnt satisfy me one bit. Ill fly low in the furball and high to cap a field, let the other guys have their "fun" vulching. (goons on the hotpad dont count) If im going for a strat and someone pops up..oh well...Its the professional vulcher that annoys me..guys with good skill who STILL avoid all fights to buzz runway( cough..pacerr..cough MrBodhi lol) Oh well have the fun doing whatever i guess..just a game.

I'll vulch all day, but a plane coming in for a landing gets to land.

The only more better thing than vulching is shooting a chute.

A vulch story from a year or so back..

A new and exciting discovery !!
This game has it's options..

Here I was in a "meet in the middle" fight, flying and dying having a good time. Opposition dropped off as a horde of goodguys flew by on the way to the enemy field.

I got a half load of fuel, nobody left to fight, so off I go to see what's up.

When I get there, their all flying around the field..

TAKING TURNS SHOOTING PLANES TAKING OFF !!!

Well hey, I LIKE IT, that might work. Haven't thought of it before. Have a guy taking off, he can't do squat, shoot his soggy bellybutton and line up for the next...

The hell with this "fighting" thing...

I could make this a profession.

So I ask who is at the end of the line cuz I want to be polite and not take "cuts" but no one answers. After asking a few times without answers I figure it's whoever sees them first..

So with my eyes rivited on the end of the runway I yell DIBS on vox when the con spawned and dive at him..

Someone else kills him..

No problem, he probably didn't hear me so I line up again. Con spawns I yell DIBS and two other guys kill him..

Ok..

I see how it is, rules of the jungle. I spend the next 5 minutes being second or third to the guy taking off.

I'm timing my turns and finding a cycle of the takeoffs...Getting into "the flow"..

Coming down fast and at last, I'm FIRST IN LINE !!!

I close in six fifties blazing and shoot a circular ring around the con with the dirt flyin all around him on his roll... I'm at 100 yards drawing pretty circles on the runway when a guy comes in from the side and kills him...

When he flew past I pinged him and removed MY left elevator....

I'm fast, I barely miss the explosion and kiss the runway on my pullout..

I'm pulling like hell to raise the nose..

Ever so slowly my nose comes up..

Just as a Tiffy spawns at the other end of the runway...

Guns blazing..

And takes off my wing......

Fogitabotit, it's tough down there, goin back to fighting.

Yeah, i know the feeling... :lol

As for not upping on a capped base.... somtimes it pays off just to keep trying! On the fifth or sixth spawn i made it up in a Hurri II (who the hell needs the runway anyway - just avoid fuel tank and soft gun ;)) killed two of the cappers  , and even managed to land the kills. :D

I know, pure luck, but what the hell, it was FUN!  :aok
