Title: armor penetration 23mm ils 40mm hurrIID
Post by: Zanth on November 01, 2004, 09:58:43 AM
"Corrected a couple of problems with the armor penetration of the l2 and the 40mm of the Hurricane IID."

Anyone know what they are talking about?

The 23mm on the Il-2 was ignoring impact speed and always figuring pentration as if impact speed was muzzle velocity.

MV on the 40mm Vickers was about 150 fps slower than it should have been.

if i am reading that correcty, in theory the il2 guns have been "weakened" to a more correct value, and the 40mm have been "strengthened" to a more correct value also.

Thanks for reply Pyro.  I have been spending a lot of time in Hurricane IID and this is welcome news (anxious to try penetrating a tiger again).

BTW is the 40mm related to the hispano (and/or is it the gun on back of PT boat?)

40mm is a Vickers S gun. Its totally unrelated to the Hispano or the 37mm on the PT boat. (wich was sourced from P39s BTW)
The S gun was purpose designed by the brits for Anti armour use from aircraft

Unless you are strafing tanks while flying your IL-2 backwards... the gun wasn't weakened.  Factoring in the airspeed of the plane will add some velocity to the rounds, increasing penetration, not decreasing it.

not what pyro said.
Penetration for the 23mm was based on muzzle velocity. Not velocity 500 yards away where the hit takes place. That will be fairly signifigant.

Oh, you are right, my mistake.

Don't think it'll have much effect, honestly.

Only Pyro knows for sure but i took it to mean the aircrafts velocity has now been added to the muzzle velocity in effect increasing the hitting power.

i took it to mean the rounds never slowed down in flight, D1500 away from being fired they were still using the muzzle veloicity for impact.

After re-reading it, I think Pongo and JB73 have it right.

Yes and no, regarding the velocity of IL2 guns.

The point is: Has the grenade used the additional velocity the a/c gave it in 500 meters? Maybe it did, maybe it didn't.

It depends of the MV and a/c speed and how fast the grenade decelerates after it has been fired.

For short ranges the IL2 gun should be now stronger and for longer ranges it should be weaker than before.

He never mentionned a.c. speed.
The bug should have been velocity always == muzzle velocity, as opposed to its actual velocity on impact.

its definetaly weaker (IL2)

Its totally unrelated to the Hispano or the 37mm on the PT boat.

It has a 37 mm and the 40mm. You two talking about the same weapon?

*edit* I guess the 40mm on the PT would be more along the lines of the Bofors maybe?

He never said that it previosly didnt add the aircraft velocity to calculate the projectile speed..he said that  what ever the muzzle speed was, it was used for penetration calculations. The muzzle velocity will depreciate farely quikcly for such a small round.
The IL2 will not be as effective.

Finally had a chance to try out the hurricane D (tanks to shoot are sometimes hard to come buy on these old little maps).  40mm is working much better when it connects, but I am sometimes seeing rounds bounce off a lot.  It is odd how easy one tank will be then the next of the same model from the same spawn can seem so much tougher.
