Title: where do you get your game reviews?
Post by: tapakeg on November 01, 2004, 08:20:45 PM
I have been a subscriber to PC Gamer for about 3 years now, they do a decent enough job.  Too many of their writers only talk about their favorite games and it is kind of distracting.

Some BBS are good because you get other people's opinions of the games.

Recently I have been watching X-Play on Tech TV.

You can read about a buggy game, while on TV you can SEE examples of the bugs.

The host's actually grow on you and the writing is very funny.

any other favorite sources?
any soruces that are complete jokes?

When a game comes out and you are unsure if you should buy it or not, where do you go to get a review of the game?

I work as a writer and reviewer over at GamePlasma.com.

The name is Scott.

We review a wide variety and so far no one gets paid, only making revenue to maintain the site.

Many many years ago I wrote for a game review magazine/site.

Since I didnt always give "flattering" reviews to some of the abortions (they call "games") they sent me, they'd edit the crap out of my writing so it made it look like it was the best game ever.  Since then, I've always been skeptical of what is reviewed favorably, as just by coincidence, the game-publisher would be doing a lot of marketing on that issue.

So, it was blatantly biased.

And, they never used my screenshots, always the ones from the game manufactuer.

Google,

I just do a search on the game title with Review at the end. Pretty simple.

Hardly buy many games these days but if it's just a shooter or something short lived I'll wait for a pirate copy. Something longer lived like a good sim I'll happily pay for it and most sims you know which are good and which are going to be lemons.

I can't remember the last time I bought a computer related magazine maybe back in the early 90's can't see any point when you have the net and there are 100's free sites.

I think most journalistic reviews suck.  So I talk to people who own the game.

I mostly watch X-Play because you can see the game being played. you get a good feel for the graphics.  It's not just a text style review.
