Title: Water shimmers, but doesn't flow and ripple
Post by: Stang on November 02, 2004, 11:16:00 PM
I'm not sure why, but the water doesn't "move" to me.  I get the sparkling reflection from the sun but I do not see the effect of the water when down low.  It looks just like the old water, it does not flow and looks really wierd.  Any ideas?

And yes, I have the animated water enabled lol.

Added new water effects.  There is a checkbox to enable this feature in your graphic detail settings.  If your video card does not support this option, the checkbox will be disabled.  This effect will appear differently depending on which effects your video card supports.

The water motion requires a video card that supports Shader Model 2.0 (SM2.0) or later.

Quick synopsis:  NVidia FX 5xxx and 6xxx cards and ATI 9600 or later 9xxx cards, or ATI X7xx and higher all support SM2.0.

The above is not an endorsement of any product.  Performance ramifications are not addressed either.

Well, I have the FX5700 and it looks just like Stang decribed.  Just sparkles but no movement and FPS takes a Huge nose dive from 85+fps to 6 fps.

Skuzzy is close, we have 2 different water effects, one for pixel shaders 1.3, the other for 2.0;

The 1.3 does not move the water or reflect the sky.

most nvidias gf4's have 1.3 support gf2's do not support pixel shaders.

My card does support PS 2.0 but like stang said, the water doesn't move and it just sparkles and looks like crap.  And the FPS hit is unbelievable.  85+ down to 6fps.

Nevermind, water does ripple for me but it still looks real ugly.  Plus the FPS is still huge hit.  Went from 85 down to 6.  Farcry's water effects are execelent.  Actually the Graphics engine is great in that game.  Why not use that instead?

I have a FX5500 GForce and my water ripples not. It does look very different when enabled though, sort of like the "Genesis Effect" in Star Trek 3, the search for Spock" Good Grief, now I've done it..let the barrage begin, dont be shy now, dont push, everyone will get a turn.......

HTC,
Could we get a screen shot of what the water should/could/would look like if we have/had/get the right software/firmware/hardware?

I'm currently using an NVidia GeForce2 Ultra with 64MB and there is no water effects checkbox, enabled or otherwise, in the Graphic Detail section (Menu: Offline/Setup/Video/Graphic Detail).  I guess I need a better video card just to see the disabled checkbox.  I must be a ways from getting to the "Genesis Effect".

Oh well, back to work.  This R2D2 unit wont fix itself.
