Had electronic voting machines at my polling place.
I asked for a paper ballot, and they said they do not offer them.
What kind of **** is this? Seriously, I'd rather have my ballot misteriously lost than potentially having my vote changed or... entered wrong.
It was no more secure than when I used the paper ballot either. "What do I do with this little memory card?" One of the polling volunteers takes it and places it on the same table where they are handing out the blank memory cards...
Ah, yes... obviously much more fool proof and better to track than paper ballots.
Before you begin, I did not vote for Kerry.
-SW
-
Aren't they going to do anything about it?
-
I'm with you on electronic voting. Get rid of it. There should be a paper ballot which can be re-counted if necessary. Voting without a physical ballot is an invitation to massive fraud.
I didn't vote for Kerry either.
ra
-
I think there should be a combination of the two. I have no problem with electronic voting as its probably easier to do. Just bush the button next to your choice.
But.. that machine should also generate two printed receipts of sorts.
One going back to the voter so he could see who he voted for on paper, and one for the state in case of the need for a manual recount
-
BTW - by "entered wrong" I don't mean, I hit the wrong key... I mean, I put a check mark next to Candidate A and the machine puts it into the memory card as Candidate B either through an error or other.
-SW
-
wonder who's benefiting from this..
-
If you voted for Bush they will probly just let it slide... If you voted for kerrie then probly at least a dozen democrat lawyers can make you a tear stained poster boy on msnbc if you are convincing enough... Are you a black person maybe?

Lazs2 so what if the guy is black? His opinion is his opinion. Bit worried at what you are trying to say here.

who dod you vote for AKS\/\/ulfe ?

Badnarik.
I got the least amount of acid reflux when I read about his platform compared to the other candidates.
-SW

ok :)

SOunds to me like he was saying that if he is black, the democrates can make a bigger deal of it. It's sarcastic, but what's the big deal?

gee tinpot... I wish I could say I cared what you think but... I couldn't care less..

I guess you never use an ATM for any of your banking, never bank on line, or make a purchase by computer.
You never do any online tradeing or send e-mails, you never drive on a toll road with an E-pass.
I have no problem with E-voteing but then I am a youngen of only 42 and grew up with computers.
Get used to it, electrons are nonpartazion punch cards can be lost, padded, repunched.
-
I'm 23 and grew up learning computers.
I have an inherent distrust for technology, because I know how easy it is to make something electronic not trust worthy.
Memory cards can be wiped, inputs can yield different outputs, no paper reciepts for your voting, etc.

SW the card was not your ballot. The card is just for authentication to use the voting system. It's like typing in a password, or inserting a key.
-
Okay, I did not know that.
Still, that makes it even easier to tamper with.
-SW
-
I think that electronic voting is a good idea as long as there are a few additions to it.
The voter should always receive a printed copy of what they voted for as well as the poll. If there was a problem with say, a big magnet, or someone placing a voted memory card in the blank pile the numbers could be referenced at the end. The number of paper ballots compared to the number of electronic ballots should be equal. If there needs to be a recount, the paper would be the first place to start.
There should also be an online database that can be referenced by the voter to insure that what they voted for actually got marked.
Bush was my only Republican vote, I voted Libertarian on all the others.
-
I agree with AKS\/\/ulfe.
However I'd point out that even a paperballot or record doesn't help if somebody has hacked the computers to generate a certain result. All they have to do is have the computers tally the vote up so that it is outside of the recount margins and voila, nobody'll ever know. The system I voted on was a fill in the dot on paper and have the computer read it, ala SATs. Now who can absolutely guarantee that the reading computer hasn't been programmed to ignore that dot and produce a given result?
I am uncomfortable with these black box tools for calculating the vote. It just seems to me that using old methods and technologies you'd need a whole heck of a lot more people in on a hijack than you would with the computers.

Yeah, the votes input at each terminal. Each terminal has their own database to store the votes right? Maybe they had a central location, but I didn't notice any wires running to anything other than the power outlet.

At least somebody on this forum agrees with me. My goodness, so many of you people are rude stunninghunks. Ever thought of listening to opinions and, *GASP* being nice about it?
You make it as if people who don't like Bush are evil bastards who don't respect our country, which couldn't be any farther from the truth.
And, when you win, you're smug about it. You like to take cheap shots relentlessly. I don't exactly call that honorable.
Thanks for being such NICE people. Not.

Wow, I didn't see that one until a few seconds ago.

What crap.
There were leftist threads proclaing a Bush loss and gloating over the exit polls last afternoon before even most pols close iirc.. Boohooo hooo stop crying Fruda..

Only person I saw taking cheap shots in this thread was SLO and the other clowns who jumped on Lazs for making an innocent wisecrack about the DNC. Methinks you got a little sand in your crack over the election results.
-
I actually like Maddox. A lot.
I'm not going out of line in the least calling that guy a racist. Insinuating that some guy is black just because of difference of opinion *is* racist.
That wasn't meant to be humorous. It was meant to be simple. And I'm quite far from being a "tightass".
-
The election results were no problem for me. It's just a lot of the people who support Bush and the way they "celebrate".
-
Fruda
I see you havent been on these boards for very long, the door swings both ways.
As far as Lazs who can defend himself but did you notice AKS's reply
Yes Lazs, black as night. Can't see me in the dark unless I smile or open my eyes.
he didnt seem to be offended at all.
-
But still, that was racist either way.
Here in Texas, I've been around *way* too many people like that. They're all the same.
-

You still don't get it. Hint, read the sentence before " Are you a black person maybe?", and remember which demographic group the DNC loves to claim as being "disenfranchised" when they go lawyering.
-
I may be offended if I was black, but I'm not. I just pretend to be a black guy on the internet.
-SW
-
I know about that, but it doesn't change the simple fact that it was racist.
-

Haaahahah.
You're probably like them too, sir.
All too often I hear these *******s talk about how black kids should be banned from public schools, and how Mexicans shouldn't be allowed to vote (no, not illegals, just Mexicans).
They're the bigots, not me.

Yanno......lazs is more than capable of defending himself, and making you feel like the moron you are. So I wont bother.
But you sit here and go off on someone for what you feel is a racist comment, when he was making a political comment, and you proceed to do so by painting him with a racial stereotype brush of a different color. Nice going. Apparently Canadians arent too bright either. Oh wait, thats making a generalization, and thats wrong! Heaven forbid I should think ALL Canadians are stupid because you act like an ignorant jerk. I guess your handle suits you pretty well. SLO.

So i guess we should bring up lazs bid to end women's suffrage.
I will give you a great bit of advice fruda, if there are things in this thread that offend the crap outta you, I recommend to stop reading them now, and turn off all chat channels in AH immediately.
Thin skinned people will just get an ulcer on these boards
BTW I met lazs a couple time IRL and he is quite a decent fellow, though i doubt he would admit it.

Thank you for such a good time. You've been great.

Hey this is what happens when you go into the pool hall and pick a fight with the skinny old geezer, and his 275 lb buddy comes back from the toilet. :)
-
Heh. Especially when said 275-pound dude isn't very open-minded.
-
The toothless bald geezer isn't very open minded, but I am. :)
-
Okay, then change that to "toothless, bald geezer isn't very open-minded".
I know that I rarely post in this part of the forum, and there's a reason for that. There are *way* too many people who like to pick fights and spread nonsense propaganda from a certain political party.
-
Lazs wasn't picking a fight. He was making a joke (about DNC racism) among friends. Then a few people either didn't get the joke, or chose to misinterpret it, and came in looking for a fight.
-
Okay then, I stand corrected.
At least you're one out of a few dozen who's nice enough to tell it like it is.
-
Thanks man, here's to you *opens Budweiser*.

You're right about that in general though.
I'm wondering when they'll get to me. My guy got creamed worse than Kerry.
-
Okay then *chugs it down*.
As I've said, there's a reason so many of us don't like a lot of Republicans. They're rude, they taunt when there's no need to, and they're generally full of themselves. This board shows that, and magnifies it.
I wonder if being nice for a change ever occured to these people.
-
Hey, I'd have like to see Badnarik as President. This country has too many problems that need to be changed.
The outsourcing problem is just the tip of the iceberg.

voted Badnarik too didn't you :)
I did too

Not all of us are Republican. Personally, I cant stand Bush. I just had to make a decision, and Kerry was worse.
And yes being nice occurs to me from time to time. I usually only get bent out of shape by a few people.
1) People who throw "redneck" comments around like they are candy at halloween. When you come from anywhere near the South, its like Jeff Foxworthy says. "You open your mouth and people deduct 50 IQ points automatically." Its just as much a stereotype as the ones some ignorant people throw at blacks.
2) People who use handicaps or disabilities as a meal ticket or "free ride" to live off the rest of us. I spent damn near a year flat on my back and several years after that in intense physical therapy with doctors telling me I'd liklely never walk again. Bullhockey. Yoda said it best. Do not try. Do, or do not. There is no try. Christopher Reeve didnt cry about what happened to him in public. He used his struggle to overcome his disability to be a role model. I'm sure there were nights he felt self-pity and cried over what he lost. But he didnt show it in public and didnt ask for anyone to feel sorry for him. If he'd only had the time, I'd have put money on him using his legs again, if not walking for real.
3) People who want something from you, and instead of asking politely they try to see how much they can get out of you by pushing. Most times I'll bend over backwards to help someone, if you just ask. But you better believe if you start pushing my buttons I'm gonna push yours.
Other than that, I'm a teddy bear! Who says I'm not nice? :D

I have never walked away from the booth with a receipt, ever.

and I have voted on just about everything, including the big a22 deals with the big red handle and cloth curtins.

I got a receipt from my paper ballot. It didn't indicate my votes, but it was a receipt.
Hey SW, I guess you were the 1 guy in DC who voted for Bush?
-
The problem with the EVote machines is the code etc are all secrete. As long as that is the case there will always be the potential for fraud.
They need to open these machines up for public review before and after the election to be inspected for tampering etc.
The code needs to be public domain so that loopholes and security holes can be found and closed.

The votes go into the terminals. Just like ballots go into a box. You could steal a terminal and hack it to have all votes for your guy. Or you could steal a ballot box and stuff it full of ballots for you guy. I don't see much of a difference.

-
Yeah, you are naive demaw. But that's expected.
The difference is in how easy it is. Sure, you could stuff a ballot box full of your guy's votes. Then you have to dispose of the other ballots. If there was something suspect, you have your finger prints on the ballot. If you were smart enough to wear gloves, there's still the issue of ink used.
Really, it's a lot easier to just change votes on an electronic device than to make paper ballots disappear.

Scooter do you have any Computer industry expieriance and I don't mean you bought a Dell :D.
Why would public code be a problem.
Anything running on Unix or Linux is public code, for that reason many of the potential hacks have been discovered and the OS made safer. The same thing would happen to in this situation as well.
There is no reason to fear public domain. If only five people know about an exploit nothing gets fixed and one of them might even exploit it. If everyone has reviewed and checked the code and the machines then we are all safe.
