And I'll give Kerry and the Democrats credit for being better than I thought they would and conceding now instead of dragging it out.

Me too. Although I still worry about the Dem party. At least Kerry has decided to salvage dignity from defeat.
Respect for the process is more important than a particular outcome. If the Republic is going to endure, people need to remember that. A scortched earth policy just because your guy lost is a short sighted tactic. Claiming the whole thing is rigged and invalid just because you didn't win is the emotional equivalent of a 9 year old kicking over a chess board at check-mate.
I would have said that no matter who won. It just turned out a little easier.

This election is sort of a moral victory for Bush. He won without it ending up in the supreme court, and with a majority of the popular vote. It will save him from going down in the history books as an unwanted president elected by a fluke.

The dem party has swung so far left, I'm not sure 4 years in enough time to recover. W/ Daschle gone, this gives them hope.

My hunch is the decision was more Kerry's than the party's (yes, Steve, I do agree the Dem party is a mess).
I hold out more hope for a strong independant candidate in '08, or maybe a more moderate Republican.

As close as it was, I don't blame him for waiting until there was a complete count. He did the right thing and did'nt drag it out.

Perfectly reasonable to wait for the counts to finish on this close of an election.
I would not have even been bent out of shape to wait for the provisional ballots to be counted.
But I guess they have realized the math just makes it moot.

I hope you folks are right and the real reason isn't more concerned with self image and future preservation.
The good news is that another left wing radical is off the radar for president.
Maybe if the true Dems (not the left wing fanatic intelligentsia elitists in Hollywood) step up, they will find that moderate Dem to lead, and make this a two party system again.

Kerry's concession speach was a class act - called for unity, the need to heal the wounds, reach across the party lines.
Edwards speach was clearly aimed for the party line - I wish he hadn't done it.

Based on what CNN just reported about this morning's activity in the Kerry campaign, the lawyers wanted to fight the Ohio results and Kerry over-ruled them, preferring to do what was best for the country.

Gonzo, I've asked this on the boards before. Maybe you and some other thoughtful Dems/moderates can help me: Why doesn't the Dem party embrace Lieberman? I honestly think he is a dem that could garner some repub votes, and one that the moderate dems would really relate to.
I'm sure there are logical reasons for the dems not getting behind lieberman... I just don't know what they are.

Biggest and most obvious reason: he's Jewish.
Seriously - especially now. Polls released today show 60% of the people who elected Bush go to church once a week. And, of course, you must carry part of the South - the Torah ain't required reading in the Bible Belt. And, on top of everything, can you image the reaction in the Arab world of a Jewish U.S. President?
It's not a good reason, but it is logical. I wish it weren't so, but that's the way things are at this time in history.

Yesterday and today both candidates acted like gentlemen. I was beginning to wonder if either had it in them. It would be nice to see a whole campaign ran with the same consideration.

You're right- they should have done the recount in Florida, declared Gore the winner and Bush should have conceded defeat. Instead him and good ol' boy Jeb stole the election, started a war against the Moslem world and all you right wing freakizoids have been crowing all damn day.
