Title: Ki-84-Ia 29th Sentai Finished
Post by: Kweassa on November 04, 2004, 05:38:50 AM
While still busy working on the "Historic 190s Project", couldn't resist doing this particular Ki-84.

I'm pretty sure there are others already working on this one as it is one of the most famous profiles available, so I'd like to wait and see how others are doing also.  :)

Only the basics are finished, and no weathering is applied yet.

As you can see it doesn't look bad under some lighting angles(bottom pic), but I'm having trouble depicting metallic conditions under low light intensity(top pic).

I'm wondering if anyone's got a good "metal plate" texture with nice visible results. The metallic textures I'm using on this Ki-84 was borrowed from experimental works I tried with the P-48 way back, and its got some problems. :)

About 80% Finished, still no weathering applied, some fixes/additions left.

Studying methods to depict baremetal looks is an interesting experience. :) Not sure if its sufficient, but seems much better than first attempts.

Pic was taken at 14:00, the same time, as the very first pic. Much better metallic look despite same sun light conditions.

Very Nice, I have a pic of that one w/ the Blue on it.
In one of my books its described as flyin for  HQ Chutai, 29th Sentai summer of '45

Beautiful as always kweassa! :)

Are those canopy frames off limits as far as skinning goes or you just haven't got to them yet?

Yeah, how is that bitmap for skinning?  Any mirroring, unreachable areas...

The B-24 and Ki-84 have no mirroring or stretching at all that I have noticed.  I just glanced at the Ki skin but I know that the B-24 has no stretching or mirroring.

Some minor stretching involved with the anti-glare part, but rest of the areas are clean and scot-free, no mirroring at all. The canopy areas are  unfinished :)

However, like IL2/FB all of the plane textures have been compiled into a single bmp file, so inevitably there is some loss in resolution.

Noticed that Kweassa :(  Although the cockpit resolutions will certainly increase a ton with the other 1024 bitmap.

Looking good so far

By the way, anybody have a good reference on Ki-84 markings and texts?

Geez, I live in the same international time zone as Japan, but you guys won't believe how hard it is to aquire Japanese books in Korea(much less Western literature!). Can't seem to find any decent reference on markings used in JP planes. I've seen the IL2/FB versions of Ki-84s but I think they're all too exaggerated in the first place.

 Any good sources?

Use a 1 pixel, non anti-aliased brush or pencil, with spacing at the desired value.  Spacing is somewhere in the brush/pencil's "brush options", the one that has all the other stuff like pressure tablet settings and roundness jitter etc.  If you haven't moved anything around, it should be at the bottom of the top-of-the-screen menus, on the right; a large box menu will appear when you click the right ****.

Then with the tool configured as you want, click once at the beginning of the rivet line, push and hold Shift, and click a second time at the other end of the desired rivet line to link your first and second clicks.

Thx Cooley, I've renamed it to the correct squadron.

The Ki-84-Ia of HQ Chutai, 29th Sentai is now finished and available at Skin Department. The finished picture is updated at the very first post.

Very very minor stretch at the rear of the cockpit which I couldn't do anything about, but its not anything serious I hope. Overall its a wonderful skin to work with, much easier than any thing before.

Only pity is that it uses just one BMP file, but if all planes are made such way it would cut down on 50% of texture usage in the game and would be a bit more helpful to people with medium grade systems.

 Enjoy :)

It's simply awesome Kweassa!!

You've submitted it allready, right?

Btw, thanks for that Hartmann's G-6 submission! My favourite G-6 skin so far! :)

Kweassa ...

Every picture that I have seen of this plane, the arrow and its shaft are closer in proximity to the elevator and it also seem to run parallel to the elevator.

As beautiful of a job that you have done, it just doesn't feel right ... if you know what I mean.

Like this??

It's impossible to bring the arrow up any closer to the Hstabs without destroying the look and feel - as you can see the 3D model is a bit off. The Hstabs are placed a bit higher than the real thing.

There ya go .... looks much much better ... considering what you have to work with. I didn't realize (and how would I) that you sometimes have to work within the constraints of what you have been given.

Nice job and thanks for listening.
