Wow, it's worse than I thought!
Source here (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml;sessionid=LE01RWUDBFEHZQFIQMGSM5OAVCBQWJVC?xml=/news/2004/11/06/wbig06.xml&sSheet=/portal/2004/11/06/ixportal.html) Fat Americans are eating into the US air industry's bottom line, forcing planes to consume ever more fuel to transport their bulk.
The average weight of Americans rose by 10lb during the 1990s and what a new survey called this "additional adiposity" caused airlines to use a further 350 million gallons of fuel in 2000, at a cost of £149 million. This is hitting the environment with an extra 3.8 million tons of carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere.
Bankrupt United Airlines, America's second biggest air travel company, recently announced that it would spend £650 million more than expected on fuel this year because of rising oil prices.
To reduce the weight carried by their planes, airlines have dumped metal cutlery and large magazines and want to use lighter materials in seating. But passenger size is more difficult to control.
To howls of outrage from the country's "fat acceptance" lobby, Southwest Airlines has begun asking larger travellers to purchase a second seat. <:lol - beet>
"The obesity epidemic has unexpected consequences beyond direct health effects," said Dr Deron Burton of the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, which published the findings. "Our goal was to highlight one area that had not been looked at before."
America's eating habits have been blamed for a lower than expected rise in life expectancy and dearer health insurance but never before for contributing to the woes of a whole sector of the economy.
A commuter plane crash that killed 21 people in North Carolina last year has been blamed on the passengers' greater than average weight.

Beetle, just stick to posting pictures of your British door knobs that work. It's great stuff.
One fat lazy American Union member that would have taken all day to do that job right, would have saved alot of lives.
Safety investigators zeroed in Tuesday on airplane maintenance by outside contractors at a hearing into the cause of the plane crash.
The plane, which plunged to earth 37 seconds after takeoff, was found to have improperly set turnbuckles, which control tension on elevator control cables. If a cable is too slack, the pilot does not have full control of the elevator, a tail flap that moves up and down and causes the plane to climb or dive.

beetle told me that he was probly the fittest man in england. I see no reason to doubt that and my travels there did nothing to dispell what he said.
lazs

When boarding the plane, passengers are not weighted, but their bags and the cargo is.
...and then the weight is calculated from the number of pax and weight of cargo.
Bad for smaller planes

a) it's still under investigation as it's not listed as "final"
b) it was a maintainence issue compounded by an "aft cg".
You can make a CG "aft" with a feather in the right place.

If you're gonna be a dip and post something about an overwieght, out of CG airplane, at least get it right and use this one.

The crash was a tragedy.
Beet1e using a UK rag to suggest that fat Americans were the culprits and seeing the chagrin of Creamo et al did tweak the old funny bone...but only because it was such an obvious troll.
You were over at Check 6 when Funky and SOB were posting all that "funny" stuff about the 9/11 Donkey Kong game but weren't questioning them on that.
Why me on this?

Why not you on this?
I know what Beetle was doing with this. It's his usual stuff.
I didn't think the donkey kong thing was funny or in good taste either.

Ya... so have I. He couldn't help but comment on how fat he thought americans were.
So... is a troll where someone just posts something to try to get a reaction... or can it be when the person truly believes the material he is posting and feels it supports his own observations?
This isn't a troll. It's actually a belief. The fact that you think it a troll pretty much sums up the opinion.

I disagree.
I remarked to a friend the other day that all the British chicks on the amateur porn site I visit occasionally all seemed to be hideously ugly.
Is this a belief I hold sacred? Do I now believe all British women who pose naked on the internet, or British women in general, are hideous? Of course not.
Whatever...I viewed Beet1e's post as a "super obvious" little jab at Americans. String says it this way "I know what Beetle was doing with this. It's his usual stuff." I agree with him.
I was not trying to say the event itself was funny at all, just that this was typical Beet1e and that he hooked a bunch with it.
You had beers with him too. How'd that go? Did you enjoy yourself despite your obvious differing points of view (and your indignation that he thinks Americans are fat), or did the fisticuffs fly? I'm guessing the former as I'm sure that would have been BBS news by now.

Beetle isn't a bad guy, he just likes to flame a little like a lot of us.

It wasn't quite like that. At that gala dinner on the last night of the con, I was on your table, with Tomato, Funked and a few others. And Funked was asking you how the journey with SOB down from Oregon had gone. And you said it had gone OK, except that you'd had to do all the driving because SOB could not fit behind the steering wheel of your car.
You also had to concede, along with Lazs, that my teeth were not crooked, and were in good condition. :D
-
Actually, you commented on how amazed you were to see so many overweight Americans (weren't talking about the con... just in general). That's what brought the "your teeth aren't as crooked as we thought they'd be" stereotype statement.
And curval, you seemingly think I'm condemning someone for something here. That's not the case. I just find it amuzing that you decided to dismiss this thread as a troll. If you really believe that, you have not read anything beetle has been posting for the last 2 years. I'm not saying the posts aren't laughable, I'm just disagreeing on the intentions.

And if you crash in the middle of nowhere and are stranded for weeks and weeks with no food ...

Iodised salt? I've got a 750g container of "sea salt", produced by evaporating Mediterranean Sea water, according to the label. One of those will last me about three years.
MiniD - I think I would have been way past my days of being amazed. Besides, CA isn't really a "fat" state. The midwest was pretty bad though.

That's a bit rich, coming from the master country basher of Britain, France, and other countries.
As previously explained, and now repeat for the benefit of those who need comprehension assistance, they weren't *MY* facts. I quoted a newspaper article - is all. The thread title paraphrases the emboldened passage in the article.

I don't know curval... does one know someone better if they sit for a few hours in a bar together sucking down booze in the dark or if they spend the day together sober shooting a variety of firearms and having sober conversations?
seems that blue was the most upset guy in the thread.
I do know some fat Americans... My son goes about 280. He also bench presses 350 lbs. don't think too many pasty drunken pub crwalers want to get in his face about being fat tho. Funked is a big guy too both him and my son are total *****cats tho. Great guys.

-
It's simple fact that a majority of adult Americans are overweight nowdays and the problem is gradually getting worse. If Beet1e was amazed by how many fat Americans he saw, that wouldn't surprise me at all....I'm usually amazed by how many fat people there are out there too when I think about it (I usually try not to).
That said, Beet1e's article seems a bit...strange. Airlines reduce sevices and install flimsier seats mainly because it saves money; it has little or nothing to do with the size of their passengers. What company is going to admit "yeah, we're greedy"? Of couse they're going to think of some silly excuse. Likewise, they're going to think of any excuse for a plane crash they can to get attention off a worker who may not have done his job.

So your point is what? That you know Beet1e better than me? Fine. Then what is your opinion of why he posted that article? Was it to back up his solid belief that Americans are fat, or was it to make a little jab at Americans using a Britsh newspaper article?
Why are you telling us how much your son bench presses? Is that some veiled threat that pasty Brits shouldn't accuse him of being fat? I don't get it. Maybe that was for Beet1e's benefit?

well.. not all big guys are out of shape fatsos is all. And... not all pot bellied and otherwise skinny pasty faced bar stool sitters and "studmuffin" smokers are healthy and admirable is all. I have to say also that if I had to eat only British food that I would be cadaverous.

Actually THIS started the whole "How well do you know Beet1e" thing.
Fact is you read the article Beet1e posted and your first response was this:
"It's not so much that brits are fat as that they are out of shape and flabby. Must be that pub thing.. "
The two of you are continuing your "tit for tat" Americans vs Brit posts. This is why I see this as a mere troll thread...something that MiniD is trying to say is not the case.
But, his post prompted Creamo and Jigsaw to research the issue and revealed that what was obviously a crazy story about fat Americans causing a plane crash was EXACTLY that...a crazy story.
He hooked you...which wasn't too hard as you guys always are at "war" on this BBS over these isues, which is why I likened you to the tuna.
He hooked Creamo and others who actually took the time to prove the story was stupid, which is something I am sure Beet1e already knew. This is why I referred to him (Creamo) as a marlin or wahoo. Creamo doesn't post much, so to get a reaction out of him on such a troll is a good catch.

and it would seem that you were the easiest of all to hook... by your logic..

You are right, to a point, but re-read the whole thread again. I was simply pointing out that it was a good troll when I responded initially as the big fish were already on the line.
The rest of my posts were responding to Stringer's point and MiniD's assertion that this was not a troll and that Beet1e really believes what was written in that article.

I can one-up all you suckers. Not only have I shared a drink with Beet1e, he's also kissed me. Therefor, I know him best, and also, he's gay. But, he IS a brit, so I guess we knew that already. After the smooch, he secretly confessed to me that he doesn't really know watermelon about the U.S. except as a foreigner and based only on his limited experience in the U.S. as a foreigner. He also confessed that he owns every Spice Girls album ever produced and that he thinks Sporty Spice is "dreamy".

I haven't read any other replies yet, but I have been following this crash investigation (much the same way as AAL587) and so far the focus is on the control rigging for the elevator.
They were improperly rigged and did not give the pilots the ability to use full deflection of that control surface. There was a bit of an aft CG (Center of Gravity) but it was within the airplane's load limits. To see if this was something that would be considered 'easily noticable' the investigation took some very experienced pilots in the airplane and had them do a walk-around of the airplane which had been rigged (intentionally) the same way. I don't remember the numbers, but you could count on one hand the number of pilots that thought there was a problem with the way it was set up.
There have been a lot of issues (I think it's laughable that the average American with clothing, especially in winter, is 170 lbs) regarding weight of passengers. Even if overweight due to the passengers, overload percentage (in terms of pounds, how many % overweight it is) was small enough that if the rigging wasn't faulty, nothing would have happened.
Why'd a brit post this anyway as though he's making fun of Americans? Low. People died in this accident, and it's not their fault.

Dago, you seem to be the only one who hasn't actually met him in this pig pile on me. You are basing your opinion of the man on what he has written on this BBS. I'm basing mine much more on the actual person I have met.
Who, in that context has a better perspective...you or me?

You are not familiar with beetles works on this board I take it. He uses anything to paint Americans in a bad way. His insensitivity to the deaths of Americans in that crash is typical. The fact that 27 died to him is no reason not to poke fun at their weight. Yes, he is just that big of a jerk.
Part of his problem is his drinking, the other part is his physcological "issues". Sadly, he has not reached the point of recognizing his problems yet, so we must be exposed to his occasional thread denigrating our country and our people.
Someday he will die, probaby of liver failure, or possible dental disease, and only then can we expect the crap to end.

Beetle likes America and Americans and has said so himself several times...just the fact that he seems fixated on Americana is a testimate to that.
I don't see what the big deal is.
......... I posted 6 minuts after Curval, for the record :)
-
Nuke, you have to look deeper, doing it once is a troll. Doing the same thing over and over is no longer a troll, it is an obsession.
Trying to push it off as a joke, as a light hearted troll is the same as when you hear somebody insult someone, say something mean like "gosh you sure are ugly" then saying "just kidding". Done once, maybe they were just kidding, doing it over and over for years, and you realize it is not kidding, it is mean spirited and meant to hurt. It shows the true nature of the person, and the "kidding" statement just means they lack the guts to stand by their statement.
beetle has repeatadly slammed the USA and it's citizens, and a few have tried to pretend it was just his joking. It isn't.
The fact that he would make fun of innocent people who died tragically in a plane crash illustrates who beetle really is, and the problems he has.

:cool::lol
What a funny thread! I'll answer a few questions.
Curval is right - I like a bit of quality trolling. ;) I posted this thread for four reasons. - It's about aviation, in which we all have an interest
- It involved an accident, and therefore gives the aviation experts the chance to comment
- It's about Americans - and 90% of this board is American, so I had an idea the post would be well read
- It concerns the sensitive topic of obesity, a growing problem in America - no pun intended.
It's true, I have posted a number of threads over the years which could be considered controversial from an American perspective. The fact that it bothers Dago is icing on the cake. :lol
Dago is one of those guys who simply loves to bash other countries, but adopts a holier than thou attitude should the people of those countries bash back. We have, in the past, seen Dago bash the British over dental health, and bash the French with regard to their military record. Jokes like the French military vehicles needing only a reverse gear, jokes about French military weapons only having been "dropped once". Yet Dago just expects us to lie down and take it. Well guess what? We can bash back! So when Dago says Because you are a POS, a person with a sad physcological problem, stemming from an anger driven by envy and hate.
those remarks apply in equal measure to Dago when he goes on his Britain/France/Spain bashing crusades.
I don't think that my post was a bashing post. I merely quoted a newspaper article, and the title referred to part of the text in that article.
I think NUKE knows me pretty well for not having met me. :aok:cool:
Yes I did kiss SOB - lol - we were kind of burying the hatchet!
Loved the Lazs line "beetle is a great guy to be around. I enjoyed my time with him". hehe - sig material, but it's a bit too obvious. It would be really great to go shooting with Lazs AND Dago - but I don't think Lazs would allow it. :lol

Dago is one of those guys who simply loves to bash other countries,
Regarding this comment, I admit to doing my share of tossing crap at other countries, but if you had bothered to notice, it was almost all in response to someone else starting out against America first. Quite often your crap as far as Britain insults. And, I didnt limit it to one country, I dont have the obsession with slamming one country that you have. Funny how selective your powers of observations are.
Something I think you need to consider beetle (http://www.alcoholics-anonymous.org.uk/)

It wasn't a stupid question...and I have already explained why it wasn't. See above.
Now, as to the pig pile...MiniD et al are all trying to say Beet1e was really serious about an article's tone about overweight Americans... a quote from a UK paper that everyone appears to be attributing to him.

Well, here it is...right from the "horses mouth":
Curval is right - I like a bit of quality trolling. - Beet1e.

Your question at the time was pretty stupid, because you explained it later doesn't make it less so.
And you're saying that you define a "pig pile" as more than one person disagreeing with you? Ok.
-
SOB - why are you being so obtuse?
Lazs asked me why I thought Beet1e's thread was directed at him.
I answered with the question you think is "stupid" because within 4 minutes of the original post he had responded...not to the subject matter, but by jabbing back.
This demonstrates (to me at least) that he felt it was indeed directed at him and felt the need to respond in "kind".
I defined it as a Pig Pile because of these remarks earlier in the thread:

Obtuse? You asked a simple, one-sentence question. Why did he respond 4 minutes after Beet1e posted. Stupid question, stupid answer.
As far as to his remarks about Dago, if you read Lazs' previous post, I think he was referring to Dago as joining in with you and blue as folks in this thread who seem to be offended. Not folks who are hell bent on making you feel bad.
-
Geez, paranoia is getting common.
Curval, I wasnt joining in an attack on you, I was joining in this thread. Its not about you.

Gee Cerceuilvolant you find the deaths of 21 innocent people worthy of your thumbs up?
Personally I try not to make a habit of making light of deaths of others. Must be something you French and the British like beetle have in common.

Dago, in this post it certainly WAS about me and you and MiniD were both proven wrong, as already shown.
SOB, I'm not going to argue over this stupid question issue and pig pile thing anymore. It is just silly. We both know Beet1e aimed this thread directly at lazs and certain others, they've been doing it to each other in countless threads for a long time.
You don't seem willing to admit that, so let's just agree to disagree.
I'm not upset in the slightest and don't feel bad at all , don't worry. I just had a great meal at my parents place, the kids are asleep and I might even get lucky tonight after a bit of flying.

But, his post prompted Creamo and Jigsaw to research the issue...
Research? Na. I've got tons of GA stuff bookmarked, including a dozen or so NTSB reports.
This is the one I check most often.

I'd bet in the end they're going to write it off as "pilot error" since it's easy to place blame one someone that can't comment, but I still keep my fingers crossed.

Ummm, OK, there's just one small problem though. I never said I agreed or disagreed with your position. You simply assumed that and jumped on me for responding in kind to your stupid question. You were so wrapped up in your agenda that you assigned this opinion to me.
And you're right, the pig pile thing is silly. You used the term like a 12-year-old would use the term "picked on". No one was pig piling you or picking on you. There were simply others who disagreed with your opinion.
-
Fair enough jigsaw.
What is for sure is that it was a near certainty from the moment I read that article that it wasn't fat Americans that caused that crash.
By the way though...if you are privy to alot of that information can you confirm that a few years ago a charter plane had difficulty taking off and then reaching it's intended altitude as the result of coin collections being carried on board the aircraft as hand luggage rather than being stowed in the hold due to the value of the coins and the reluctance of passengers to "check them"?
The added weight was potentially a problem due to it not being factored in on the loading?
I read about it in an article and have a bet with someone about it, but cannot recall when, what airline etc.
I think I've asked about this before on these boards but cannot remember what the outcome was and the issue was brought up again recently bewteen me and the other bettor.

Actually SOB you are right. But, if you were being honest you would probably admit that you started to call my question "stupid" and making a point about it after I made that remark about you trying to get into Mini's drawers, which was probably uncallled for...as we are not on Check 6 right now. ;)
I still disagree that it was a stupid question. Hell, it was more rhetorical than anything else. I knew the answer as did you probably....and I'm not talking about the fact that lazs replied to the post 4 minutes after reading it.
lazs knew that post was directed at him and a few others and that it was a troll. Agree/disagree? Let's have it.

Kinda like you and me, eh? ;)

(not a hyjack, just an aside. I mean, this is an important thread and should be kept on track. Vital. But, while I have Creamo's attention... The rest of ya, ignore it...)
Creamo... it has always bugged me but I haven't yet found an appropriate way to say it. In one of my olden threads... (a doozy), you apologized to me for something you said. I was in no shape to tell you it at the time, but you were bang on. There was nothing to apologize about.
I suspect it was due to my posting a picture of me giving you the finger. That picture was not a response to your post, it was a joke. Because the first time I ever saw a picture of anyone here, it was you giving (I think) Mason the finger, taken with one of those web cam things. I thought you'd get it.... but admittedly it was way vague.
Now, it's none of my business what ya think about me, and this post aint about that. But for some damned reason I needed to tell you this.

No, not at all.
And I don't mean to sound crass saying that, but you were a bunch of posts per day pre-election. I only took a shot when I was just completely tired of it.
No foul. Alls good.
(Edited it because the next post came in at the same time, screwed up the flow of the thread)

Airhead...when can we pencil these two in?

Sorry, couldn't resist.
lol at the tardorific .gif Creamo.
aww...you made up already...was posting when I saw the first post I quoted.

Thank you little doggie, I'd hate to post and be a fish or a gay beach walker approved by Airhead.

just as a side note the average wait of adults used now at AA is 190 for summer and 195 for winter, this is a change that resulted because of the initial finding in that report. kids also went up by an average of 7 pounds.

I don't have any type of "insider" information. I've just gotten pretty handy at searching ntsb databases and tail numbers over the years. I find that reading accident reports keeps me humble and on my toes.
You can plug in all sorts of search criteria here (http://www.ntsb.gov/ntsb/query.asp).

What was Lazs' modivation? Don't know, don't care. I still think the reason Beet1e kissed me tho', is 'cause he has a man crush on me.

if you can make generalisation like that don't expect other people to not make "clever" comments.

Nope. British. :p

Well at least we all agree that brits are pale flabby pub crawlers.
I think that is the important thing that we all take away from this thread.

Yeah... given the opportunity to be defined as an ingenious troll or a chronic ameristalker... I wonder how beetle would want to portray himself?
Yes... we should ask more people how much they think of themselves. THATS THE SOLUTION!
"Beetle, were you really trying to be a ****heal or are you just really clever?"
-
P.S.
Curval, all you have to do is find a single other post where beetle was even remotely clever.
I'll give you a week. You'll need it.

oh I get it now... this was really a clever post aimed at making me cry.... I'm just not smart enough to get it?

MiniD, you just HATE being wrong, that is the bottom line.
You quoted this and when I asked Bett1e directly he answered:
"Curval is right - I like a bit of quality trolling." - Beet1e.
It was a troll, that is all I was saying. You denied it and said it was a belief.
Backtracking now just makes you look silly.
Bye...have a nice day.

I think everyone knows it't a troll curval... it's just that you don't realize who got caught... But you are really putting up a game fight.
mini was just being really really (twice as good as simply really)clever weren't you mini? I know mini (not in the biblical sense but pretty well) and I bet he will tell you that this whole thing was really really clever on his part and that you are wrong and that I am right..
I think that ought to settle it.

Apparently it's really important for you to know my opinion on this, but I can't make myself have one if I don't care. Maybe if there was a prize at stake or something...is there a prize?!

Did you stop reading there?
Or are you saying you're right because you asked beetle to explain exactly what you already said he was doing?
Look at the "reasons" once again big guy. Posting a troll, then defending it as a belief isn't really trolling. It's just being beetle. It was a troll, that is all I was saying. You denied it and said it was a belief.
once again... read what beetle said after your selective cut and paste.
All you have to do is dig up the demonstration of a clever beetle that insent precated with "You were just trolling... right beetle?"
-
Also, curval, just answer this one question yourself:
What if he wasn't trolling? What would your oppinion be of that? That way, beetle can at least see you aren't blindly defending someone just because they're getting those wacky americans all riled up again. That way, regardless of how he attempts to play off what he said after being coached into it... he'll know what you really think one way or the other.
