ok i do not get it, since the new patch everytime i log on it seems my computer locks up, after everything gets loaded...everything else runs fine i can go without restarting computer for days before it "messes up" but everytime i go to play AH i restart my compute just to make sure it wont freeze, i asked other people they say they have had this problem.. i just dont get it, it also seems to do it alot when i go to type the FR and game will be doing fine then just lockup out of no where, no warning no stutter, just locked up and only thing to do is reboot whole computer. i have let it sit 15mins seeing if it would unfreeze its self or something and it just isnt happening, after it froze 11 times tonight i am giving up.i rebooted then sign on go to type and locks up right away :( before the patch or whatever my computer didnt freeze up during the game really, mostly just freeze for a couple seconds that is it........any help would be great thanks :(

memory leak?
-
oh yeah i have tried turning the vertex on and off to but with it off i cant see convergence, cv waypoints, cons dissapear, etc. so i am thinking its that maybe :(
is a memory leak real? or are your joking around and how could i tell if it is leaking? i have 2 sticks of 128mb ram which comes to 256. so should i take one out and try or what
-
A memory leak is basicly a bug in a program that prevents it from freeing up memory that it no longer needs. As a result, the program grabs more and more memory until it finally crashes because there is no more memory left.
-
so would that be a bug in AH or a bug in my computer?cause my computer runs good with everything else
-
could be a combination of both bud. Your best bet would be to talk to Skuzzy about it and see what he thinks of the problem. He's always got some good ideas.
-
i just get so aggrevated when i log on and it locks up. ....thanks for the help
-
Zol, try reinstalling AH... Alot of times that fixes little problems for me. GL!

Ya got part of it right Morph ... :)
A memory leak can be caused by poor programming, when one does not release the equal amount of memory on exit from the program that it reserved while it was running. Old timers know it as FREEing and FRETing of memory.
So, if you fire up the program and it asks for 500K of memory to run and it only releases 250K on exit, 250K is now locked out and unuseable. If you use the program alot, you will eventually "run out" of memory.
The other case is that the programming langauge has a bug in it and it will not release memory that was used during execution. Java programmers do not have to worry about releasing memory on exit ... Java takes care of it all. In the earlier days of Java, at times it would not do a good job of it ... hence a memory leak.
C++, if I remember correctly, does not have automatic memory release so a C programmer must pay careful attention to the allocation and de-allocation of memory.
From the description that Zoldamite has given, it does not appear to be a memory leak to me ... at least from the AH standpoint. It hasn't run long enough to suck up alot of memory, nor has he exited from AH to allow AH to not release the memory that it had allocated.
It could be a myriad of things, but I don't believe that its a memory leak ... something else is wrong.

Had the same problem this last weekend, was perfect immediately after the patch/upgrade.
I am guessing it is to do with the state of the server most of the weekend, kept booting, laggy, dropping out etc

Certain IBM software was like that. The CICS teleprocessing monitor, for example. There were some COBOL program functions which used OS services, such as asking for date/time, the UNSTRING and INSPECT statements etc. IBM advised against using these in COBOL/CICS programs (and to use CICS functions instead), but the A/P dolts still did. Every day around 4pm, the CICS region would finally run out of memory and crash. The CICS systems programmer got pissed off, and wrote a front end to screen all code for this crap before it got to the COBOL compiler.
Thanks to the impeccably designed database backup/logging/recovery procedures, no data was ever lost. ;):D

Rgr slap, the more basic my explaination the less chance for error! :)

also with only 256,b of ram, you're going to be suffering serious stutters and performance hits if you manage to get past the lockup issue.
you need at least 512, perferrably 768 or 1024. iwent from 512, with which i had stutters and in general system slowdowns running ah2, to 768 and things improved greatly.

I run with 128. Staters only in the 1024 mode.

well i use to have a p2 computer with 128 i played with but it became umplayable so now i play on a 860mhz p3 use to play with 128 ram on here to. then i was thinking and came up with the idea to try adding ram from p2..well it worked, game usually does "ok" for me considering everything im running is old, and i guess you could say my 64mb vid card i run it with is small to but i get a FR of about 20 in a fight sometimes 30, when i look up it will go to 80 or so sometimes...........but all of a sudden i get new patch and soon as i log on often it locks up. :( lately i have only been able to exit AH by choice but i havent had the problem like this before, and when it locks up it plays whatever the sound was that it froze up on over and over....the other day a squady says yeah and it kept saying yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah and then i noticed my computer was froze lol......so i have no clue but it has only happened since new patch which im sure i said about 5 times now
-
I,ve been getting freeze ups alot the last 3 or 4 days plus a lot of disco's . Never had any of these proplems until the last 4 or 5 days.
-
does yours do it right when you log on sometimes to wojo? even if the FR is fine and without warning

Did you try sending Skuzzy a copy of your DxDiagnostic report? Its going to be hard to diagnose your problem with only the information you have given. I can see a half dozen possible reasons just in the little bit of info you have posted. For instance........
You said your video card is 64MB, and I'm assuming its no newer than anything else in your computer? Is it a GeForce 2 model? Some others with that card have posted problems. If it was running before the patch then its probably a cheaper model GF 4. What sound card do you have, and are the drivers updated? Have you tried turning down the hardware acceleration? Thats a common source of problems like what you are describing. Pyro listed bugs in the latest news announcement with the Spit that can cause boots, but I dont think it causes lockups like what you are experiencing. Also check for IRQ conflicts and sharing. What OS are you using? AH is highly processor dependent, and its going to be rough for a P3 to handle it, esp. when you are using an older model VP with low amounts of RAM. Its not impossible but you need everything else working right. Might want to check that memory too. Just because it is recognized and works for less intense applications doesnt mean its working good. With computers, as with anything else, your system will only run as fast as the slowest component.
My first guess would be soundcard related. But you really need to send in your DX Diagnostic and have Skuzzy look at it. Almost all the questions I asked above can be answered there, and the ones that cant you can deal with after you've ruled out the simple stuff.

Zoldemite, Make sure preload to system and preload to vid mem are not checked.
Also drop down to 128 max tex size.
Also make sure disable skins is checked.

drop your sound excelleration down a notch too ...
I had to do this after this last patch .. my loop problem showed up again in voice.

i have been running it on 128 texture size, and i think i preload in system memory. how do i disable skins? and i just dont get why the game would run fine then lately just lockups like crazy thanks for help guys i am hoping to make a new computer, and yes i can build one but when it comes to problems like this i need help

If you have preload to system memory turned on. Turn it off.
With the little RAM you have, you will have none left. Causeing lockups.

ok now i think my internet explorer is freezing up a bit lately to....i just dont get it i typed in a search for memory leaks or something, came up with stuff about C+++ programs. i searched the microsoft site for it, any suggestions, should i reinstall windows or what
-
Sounds like it would be better to do a fresh install (reformat)
You can email me if you want, or need help on doing so. estes@dotdoubledot.com

"I've got a friend..." that has a new ASUS 8X7N Deluxe Nforce2, AMD 3000xp, 1gig of decent RAM, 6800GT and he gets constant lockups (game freezes, can't get back to desktop). he's using the on board sound and doesn't have the ASUS mixer loaded, but other than that everything seems to be up to date (not overclocked). I've got pretty much the same rig (512mb RAM and Audigy 2 sound card) and its flawless. He has been able to play for extended periods as gunner in bombers, but when he flys as bomber pilot it crashes in 5 minutes or so, and as gunner when the flight ends his system crashes. Fighter seems to do ok. Any ideas?

you need to install the nvidia 4.27 international drivers ... and when your done lower the sound excell down one notch .

Zolda check free space on your harddrive, my bet is you are running out of space on harddrive.

Zoldamite,
I had a problem much like you described. It turned out the fan on my video card was hanging up.
