Today, November 10, 2004, Is the 229th birthday of the US Marine Corps. Born in a bar, Tun's Tavern, in Philadelphia Nov 10, 1775. Sometimes called Leathernecks. The name came from earlier uniforms that had a high leather collar designed to keep a Marine's head from being cut off in a sword fight. Marines adopted the motto Semper Fidelis, shortened lately to Semper Fi, latin for "Always Faithful". For 229 years they have remained just that, Always Faithful. Wherever you are, whatever you're doing, Happy Birthday Marines!

Happy Birthday Marines!
A co-worker of mine told us of a weekend a few months ago where he, his wife and two young kids were going to the beach with their new kayak. There was so much stuff to carry from their van in addition to the kayak that they piled everything they could into the kayak and the two adults each carried one end of the kayak. Some Marines who were enjoying the beach noticed them struggling came up and offered them a hand. They really appreciated it - I think the Marines took the kayak so that the two of them could tend to their kids. Bless them all!

DAMMIT RIP YOU BEAT ME TO IT! ;)
This is the Birthday Message written by Gen. John A. Lejeune that is read every year at the ceremony!
On November 1st. 1921, John A. Lejeune, 13th Commandant of the Marine Corps, directed that a reminder of the Corps be published by every command, to all Marines throughout the globe, on the Birthday of the Corps. Since the day, Marines have continued to distinguish themselves on many battlefields and foreign shores, in war and peace. On this Birthday of the Corps, therefore, in compliance with the will of the 13th Commandant, Article 38 United States Marine Corps Manual, Edition of 1921, is published as follows:
“On November 10, 1775, a Corps of Marines was created by a resolution of the Continental Congress. Since that date many thousands of men have borne that name Marine. In memory of them it is fitting that we who are Marines should commemorate the Birthday of our Corps by calling to mind the glories of its long and illustrious history.
The record of our Corps is one which bear comparison with that of the most famous military organizations in the world’s history. During 90 of the 146 years of its existence the Marine Corps has been in action against the Nation’s foes. From the Battle of Trenton to the Argome, Marines have won foremost honors in war and in the long era of tranquility at home generation after generation of Marines have grown gray in war in both hemispheres, and in every corner of the seven seas so that our country and its citizens might enjoy peace and security.
In every battle and skirmish since the Birth of the Corps, Marines have acquitted themselves with the greatest distinction, winning new honors on each occasion until the term “Marine” has come to signify all that is highest in military efficiency and soldierly virtue.
This high name of distinction and soldierly repute we who are Marines today have received from those who preceded us in the Corps. With it we also received from them the eternal spirit which has animated our Corps from generation and has long been the distinguishing mark of Marines in every age. So long as that spirit continues to flourish Marines will be found equal to every emergency in the future as they have been in the past, and the me of our nation will regard us as worthy successors to the long line of illustrious men who have served as “Soldiers of the Sea” since the founding of the Corps.”
Happy Birthday Marines...past present and future ~S~

In Russia Nov. 10th is a Militia day.
Russian Marine Corps (Sea Infantry) are 70 years older, formed by Peter I in 1705.
BTW, Russian Northern Fleet Marines played a key role in an assault in Grozniy in January, 1995. Just like in El Fallujah now :(

Why do you think that?
-
Because it looks to bright, it's clean, it isn't compressed at the end and the smoke looks suspiciously like it was done with a standard airbrush tip with low opacity and density.
-SW
-
I think fill flash would make the white cigarette very bright, highlight the smoke and account for the lack of shadows.
I think thats a more likely explaination than somebody going through the trouble of adding a fake cigarette.

I think they photoshopped out the Joint and put a Ciggarett there instead...
Semper Fi!
:)

Thanks for your thoughts, I'm sure they mean something to someone.
-SW
-
And you go on thinking that people just go around putting fake cigarettes into the mouths of marines in combat...
Or is cheap attempt at insults all you got...
:rofl

Wrong war, you're thinking of Kerry's war. :p

Looks photoshopped because his real dirty and the cig is real clean. Put something new and clean in a pile of garbage and see what it looks like. And even if it is so what ?
Happy Birthday Marines <>

AKWulfe,
This picture is from the Photo Essay:Storming Fallujah, at Fox News website. You really think they've got the time to photoshop it? :lol
http://www.foxnews.com/photo_essay/photoessay_208_images/111004_fallujah2.jpg
-
If it were an insult, believe me - it would have been better. Fact is, all you had were "I thinks".
Well, gee Ripsnort - I kind of thought that they would do the photoshopping here in the US, you know... where they have the time.
Dumb****.
-SW
-
My explaination logically accounts for most of the factors of the picture. The simplest answer is the most likely, what we see are the effects of fill flash metered for the soldiers dark face. The bright white cigarette is overexposed and detail is lost, the smoke is oddly highlighted and there is a lack of shadows on the face.
On the other hand we have your theory that the whole picture was photoshopped and airbrushed to add a fake cigrette and smoke.
No wonder you resort to weak comebacks or insults...
-
My first tought before reading any of the replys whas, **** this is photoshopped.

Who the **** cares if it's photoshoped or not beside the two of you.

I don't Pugg, I just stated it looked photoshopped. Grunherz apparently think it's worth his time to change what I think it looked like.
I'm going to get drunk and have fun, he can have fun convincing himself of his theories.

Duped? Ask yourself why would that photo be altered to include a cigarette? Whats the reason??

Question: Why does all this matter ?

Because he would look helpless or defeated without it?

That's the cruel world of product placement these days. It's everywhere. :(
Kiddin'.... nah, it really does look Photoshopped, but it aint. Lotsa times it ends up that the white areas of a pic become blindingly white so much so that it looks out of place.
You'd be suprised at the amount of images you see that were photoshopped (faked) to make what the camera actually recorded, look real.
-

Amen to that.
But we were discussing "WHY" would anyone photoshop a cigg in to his mouth IF that would be the case.
With it he look victorius, without it he looks defeated.

Nash and I agree... Amazing.. :)
Do you also think its due to flash used in the photo?

Being tired must mean being defeated to Swedish army, but not so to American soldiers, let alone the marines.. But then wahat would the swedish army know of combat as of late..
But have your idiotic photoshop conspiracy theories, it only makes you look like a fool..
:p
Here's maniac:
No, no no. We are not getting our butts handed to us by the marines in falluja. We are winning so much that the americans are editing photographs of defeated marines and giving them fake cigareetes to look like truimphant cowbows from the movie KO corral. Long live saddam. Deth to amreeka!
-

No - it doesn't even look like a flash was used. Even without it that effect still happens.
-
So just overexposure on the cigarette?
-
Prolly...
Daylight + white + exposure would do it.
The reason I don't think there was a flash used is because of the lack of detail or light in and around the guy's helmet, or under its straps. But yeah, a flash isnt even required to produce the whiteness of the cig.
Not only that... but the guy's mouth is in natural cig-gripping form. Not impossible to fake by any means, but far more would do it wrong than do it right. And when ya see the quality of P'shop work done when there isn't any money involved (me included), it usually doesn't cut the mustard. I can't imagine why anyone would go to the lengths to make it perfect.
-
Maybe the whole exposure was dark and was brightened with Photoshop, resulting in the white of the cig being so bright.
Who knows.
-
Some of you guys need to get a life. This thread was meant to honor Marines past and present. Take your arguments somewhere else. Maniac just go away, the political jabs are all old and tired and don't belong in this thread.
to the Marines, may they continue to serve in the proud tradition they have done since the beginning.
-
You are right Mav..
to the Marines and all who serve.
-
Yep a big
to the marines. I saw this picture earlier today before it was posted here and that look in his eyes tells me a lot about the hardships he is enduring to serve our nation.
Sorry about my participation in the derailment but I got upset at the suggestion that this man's image was manipulated for some bizzare conspiracy theory or whatever sw and maniac are suggesting...

well theres many reasons to say it darn looks photoshopped.
first, ,the guy is a mess. the cigarrete is perfectly clean. When was the last time you lit a cigarrete with dirty hands and not rubbed some off on the cig?
the upper lip portion that makes contact with the filter looks as if it was re-touched.
the burning tip of the cigarrete is too crisp to ... clear. looks like if the cigarrete was taken from a high resolution camera (probably an advertisement) and plugged into the guy's face..his picture looks like its lower res than the cigarrete.
but then again it could be the flash thing but...
WHO CARES??
the thread wasnt about that.
Happy B-Day US Marines!
