ABC Affiliates Balk at 'Ryan' Airing
Wed Nov 10, 2004 11:49 PM ET
LOS ANGELES/WASHINGTON (Hollywood Reporter) - Fearful of the FCC crackdown on indecent broadcasts, at least 18 ABC affiliates plan to pre-empt the network's unedited broadcast of the film "Saving Private Ryan" at 8 Thursday night.
The pre-emptions come despite the network's decision to warn viewers during each commercial break about the graphic violence and language in Steven Spielberg's Oscar-nominated World War II epic. ABC has aired "Ryan" twice before without any pre-emption, to commemorate Veterans Day in 2001 and '02, though some stations cited past complaints from viewers that they also factored into their decisions.
Station groups that plan to cancel "Ryan" at all of their ABC-affiliated stations include E.W. Scripps, Citadel Communications and Belo Corp. Other pre-empting stations are owned by Cox Communications, Hearst-Argyle, Pappas Telecasting and Tribune Broadcasting.
Janice Wise, spokeswoman for the FCC's enforcement bureau, said they had received calls from broadcasters asking if the film would run afoul of the rules. Wise said the commission was barred from making a prebroadcast decision "because that would be censorship."
"If we get a complaint, we'll act on it," she said.
The pre-emptions reflect the heightened anxiety among the nation's broadcasters -- likely to continue into the second term of the Bush administration -- over scrutiny, not to mention expensive fines, they could receive from Capitol Hill.
Raymond Cole, president of Citadel Communications, which owns three ABC stations, issued a statement citing the stepped-up enforcement actions taken by the FCC as the reason his stations won't air the film.
"The inconsistent manner in which the FCC is choosing to apply these rules puts TV stations like ours in a most difficult position," Cole said. "As this relates to 'Saving Private Ryan,' our concern centers on whether the FCC would consider the context in which the intense adult language and graphic battleground violence is presented in the movie."
Affiliates will be forbidden to bleep or edit "Ryan," which contains many combat scenes punctuated by profanity and violence, because ABC's contract with Spielberg rules out any alteration of the film.
Instead of airing "Ryan" on Veteran's Day last year, ABC chose to go with Diane Sawyer's interview with Pvt. Jessica Lynch. This year's edition was to run with an introductory message from Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.
As of press time, the stations declining to air the film include five owned by Scripps, in Detroit (WXYZ), Phoenix (KNXV), Cleveland (WEWS), Cincinnati (WCPO), and Tampa-St. Petersburg, Fla. (WFTS); four owned by Belo, in Dallas/Fort Worth (WFAA), Hampton/Norfolk, Va. (WVEC), Louisville, Ky. (WHAS), and Austin, Texas (KVUE); three by Citadel, in Des Moines, Iowa (WOI), Sioux City, Iowa (KCAU), and Lincoln, Neb. (KLKN); two owned by Cox, in Atlanta (WSOC) and Orlando (WFTV); two owned by Hearst-Argyle, in Manchester, N.H. (WMUR), and Milwaukee (WISN); one owned by Tribune Co., in New Orleans (WGNO); and one by Pappas, in Lincoln, Neb. (KHGI).
This is stupid. Maybe Howard Stern is on to something after all.

This is real not a joke.
I cannot believe it. What a bunch of friggin morons.

I knew that you have a pretty harsh cencorship, but this is just unbelievable.

It's here too... They recently started censoring language of in-car WRC footage.

I think the FCC's "We won't tell you want you can or can't do, but we will fine you when you are wrong" stance is pathetic.

We have a WINNER!

That's just plain Foookin Stoooopid.

Take note that I don't approve of most sensorship. I think shows should have ratings and that's about it. If I feel my kid doenst need to see something he doesnt get to watch it.

I'm jealous. We don't even get WRC coverage here :(

so whats the big deal? go buy the friggin dvd or rent it for a buck or two down the street... or tune to a cable station that is showing it.
you watch public TV that goes out free to every possible type of person including children and religious zealots and then you giove the government the power to regulate it in order to protect everyones sensibilities that might tune in accidentaly and then...
you whine because people get offended and ask for some (most) types of content to be not shown?
you can show pretty much anything you want you just can't shove it ion peoples face on public and free and regulated airwaves..
I can't believe that any of the people complaining here watch network TV in any case. either dump all the regulations or get used to the public and network tv bowing to the weakest link.

If public service must bow to the weakest link, then it should apply in other areas of life aswell. Maybe traffic and gun laws would be a good place to start?
-
Laz actually supports the movie not being shown? Like that is a good thing?
Man now I have heard everything.
-
mora.. that is my point... you let the government run your life and this is what you get.
I didn't ask for the regulations. You allways lose when you allow governmetn to regulate a part of your life. the question is how big a loser you wanna be?
I simply don't watch the government tv... you can do what you want or simply sit there and be outraged.

FCC said not during prime time (ie before 10pm) , not "you can't show this movie"
-
same ol bs... the socialists ask for all kind of government intervention in our lives "for our own good" figuring that there guy will do it according to their belief system of what is right and wrong and then... their guy loses and the new guy has all that power they just handed over to the government but...
the new guy doesn't think at all like one of the annointed who they gave the power to originaly.

You know you're in America when they find the "F" word more offensive than the depiction of someone being shot in the head.
You know you're in America when clips of kidnapped people begging for their lives are shown on network tv, but "Saving Private Ryan" isn't.
"Traditional values" breed insanity (and causes warts).
-
It is a Stephen Spielberg movie. Think about that. One of the most mainstream directors ever.
If they can't show his movies then think of all the other things that will never get shown on TV again.
It really is a sad time now in the US. The politically correct moral majority have really changed things for the worse. Big time.
God bless Colon Powell's son and the FCC. They are protecting us from ourselves. I can hardly wait to run home and watch Heidi tonight on TV.
-
even with the warnings, it should not be shown on the public airwaves:
"Rated R for intense prolonged realistically graphic sequences of war violence, and for language."
anything for ratings I guess...
-
what about the "n" word... what about the KKK having a network show or the aryan brotherhood? You want censorship when it is the "right kind" of censorship (PC) and bow to those weak minded liberals who pass out when they hear the "N" word but don't allow for the weakest link on the other side of things.
you ask for censorship and get it.... when someone from the other side gets ahold of the reigns then the censorship is bad?
censorship in this case has exactly the same purpose and uses the same tools... the purpose is to keep from offending some people... the tool is big brother and the giving up of your rights.
either put up with changing life limitations based on who is in power or quit being such a friggin socialist and asking for government, any governmment to solve your problems.
When klinton was in there were tons of aholes lined up to get him to restrict the freedoms of "those people". Now the power is interpreted by a different regiem.
Can't have PC and still expect to watch Saving Private Ryan. can't hear the N word or see Ryan unless you cut the government out of the equation.
soooo like I said... put your copy in the dvd player or go rent or buy a copy or tune to one of the cable stations playing it.
quit your whinin... sound like that baby stern.

No, the FCC refuses to say anything about it. They are simply going to let it happen, and then if they get complaints they are going to investigate them, which may result in fines for the stations.
-
that is the way that government intervention works. It is open to interpretation. I deal with environmentalists all the time... the EPA.. they have arbitrary standards that are impossible to meet. when asked for direction on how to meet them they say... come up with a plan and if we like it you will be OK... If we don't then you will be fined. We can't give you guidance because we are not here to solve your problems.

Yep, I stand corrected
So nothings been censored yet, it seems like a network decision, not a FCC one

I'd bet a month's salary if Foxnews Channel could do it and get away with it, they'd be first in line. I can see it now...
"Fox and Friends' Liberal Beheading Hour, Narrated by Chris Hannity. "Today's guest : Hillary Clinton."
F-k cable, that's gotta be on PPV

Government should not be involved in censoring content on the airways. The stations should be free to use their own judgement because the will of the viewing public will shape just how 'crazy' they can get. A hard core pornography channel will never make as much advertising money as a family friendly one, so it'll regulate itself better then any artificial rules imposed by the FCC.

Sent an email to ABC here in Phoenix to tell them there decision to air Hooser's instead of SPV sucked.

heh, you dont know "politcally correct" till youve seen whats happened in britain.
i find it disturbing that they would censor any historical type war movie.
-
Ill start by saying that I think "Saving rivate Ryan" is a great movie, it shows the invasion of Normandy like no movie before it, I also think its a good movie to show on vetrans day.
With that said I do understand some of the reasoning behind the decisions to not air it. This movie although very moving is still an action war movie. The authenticity of the movie ends with the storming of the beach, after that its just a story. The series "Band of Brothers" is very historical and accurate and can be used as a teaching tool. This movie unfortunatly can not be, unlike "Schindlers list" wich was aired uncut with no protest, because no matter how you look at it its still fiction.
I am watching the movie myself right now and am very moved by it, not matter how many times I watch it that will always be the case. I compare this movie to "Pearl Harbor" only in that they both pay tribute to American heros but after that they are still works of fiction.
P.S. - I am in no way saying Pearl Harbor was as good as Saving Private Ryan.
-
I bought a copy a long time ago. My father walked the ground. Bless him and all Vets. I wouldn't want my grandson watching it, but the network could show it after family programming. Very good movie.

I know a team that reconstructed the Higgin's boat that landed the d-day invasion. Recently they found an original.

Something else id like to ad, does anyone else get a different feeling when watching war movies that deal with ww2 or before than when the watch movies about more recent conflicts. When I see a movie like "Black Hawk Down" or a movie based on the Vietnam Conflict I feel this anger build up inside of me. When I watch them I just hate the enemy with a passion and I get so upset. When I watch movies dealing with older conflicts I get emotional and they touch me but I dont feel a hatred for the enemy. I never watch these movies and hate the germans, I had lots of family that fought in the war but I still dont feel that anger.
I dont know if its because im too young to have those feeling and with the more recent conflicts I can relate. But I think its deeper than that, to me I see the Nazis as the enemy but an enemy with honor who were doing what their country to ask. Anyone else have the same thoughts or have something else to add.

To the ABC affiliate here. Channel 15.

I read a really good oped about how "outdated" the FCC is. (i'm reciting from memorty here so bear with me)
It was orriginally implemented when Radio first came about. The reason for it was the fact that there were very few stations broadcasting for the longest time. If the one station started spewing out all kinds of blather they could have an influence on ALOT of people in a short amount of time with out any competition or alternate views.
Thus the FCC was born to regulate the newborn radio market. After a while they jumped into broadcast TV as well.
Nowadays there is SOOOO much out there in almost everystate the real reason for having them now is outright censorship/thaught police. Myself I think there should be Rating standards and that's it. If there's something in a rating that I don't want my kids exposed to I won't let them watch it. That's were it should start and stop.

It was unedited here in nyc. WABC

The US network does this too, but they don't know all the foreign swear words, so they miss some. I miss Francois Delacour. CENT FOIS TROP TARD!!!!

I've never actually watched all of Saving Pritvate Ryan. I've heard its a good movie.
The landing scene was a little too much. I had to walk away and drink more beer.
They showed Schindler's List with nudity. Why the poosy-footing around with this movie?

It would not have aired edited anywhere. Because of the contract signed, it was either air it or don't, no in-between.

Hehehe... The Osbournes on MTV...
The family: you you sheep stupid . mooom jack is and he all the time.
Ozzy: huh? what?

They only censor the swearing in finnish here. And the reason is more to "save" the drivers face than to protect the public. For example Gronholm is usually censored as almost his every other word is a C- or S-word.
