Post by: Honch on November 12, 2004, 12:47:02 PM
Thank-You Sax, Nopoop, Octavius, and all of the others out there who fly Spit-1s, 109Es, P40s, 202s.  etc . .

You guys make the game fun for me again.

C an I ask why you do it?  And don’t say for the challenge . . cause I don’t buy that.  Its Gotta be something else...

hmmmm?

Cause no one else does.

Cause I can't see out the back--saves on hat switch.

Cause it's slow and most of the vets I know and chat with are slow and hafta stay in icon range.

Cause it's fun--thats why I play AH

Cause other than SE stuff which I'm getting back into , I enjoy being out numbered--I'm serious when I say long live the Horde.

Cause it's my 14.95

Always enjoy flying with yas Honch

I'll fly it if you are Honch.  That's unless I just need to get in a Spit V  just because :)

3-4 P40s up at a time makes for good fun.  On the deck fun, but fun nonetheless

I thought you were gunna say "Cause its slow and I have more time to drink beer enroute."

'Cause that certainly is a factor for me!

I still see Sax primarily flying that late war uber ride: the FM2.

And we all know there's two reasons to fly that plane:

1) It's a stone cold killer

2) It's Blue

1st you ask why, but then you give restrictions to your question...

its the challenge, once you've flown everything there is in the inventory, no more ACM's to learn, you grab the best challenging plane and try to take ACM even farther buy flyin what is the hardest vs. the easiest...

ex:

grab a 202 and go fight LA7's, the lala will have a Golly-geen hard time killing you, and you will take all your ammo just to hurt em:D

my hardest ride was always the F4U-D, under 10k vs. spits niks and lala's...

oh and always loved turn fightin spits in Typhoon...

I was circling above the whole hoard of them in P40s, Hurricanes,  F4Fs. and they were litterally 8 of them in a 1000 yard cube. I looked down at them from my Yak and wished I had a bomb..I could have gotten 5 of them with a 1k bomb..

Less popular planes are just more attractive for some reason.  Should the P40E see 20% of the usage in the MA, I'd probably switch to a different ride :)

And I suppose you're right Honch... in some cases it isn't the challenge, and others it is.  You can find a challenge in just about any aircraft.  A challenge for me in an La7 would probably be 4v1.  Should I be so lucky and I work my way down to a 2v1 or 1v1, it gets progressivly easier.

1v1 in non-identical aircraft always seems a heck of a lot easier than 1v1 in identical aircraft.  Individual characteristics of each aircraft have both their exploits and their advantages.  It's easier to morph a fight that way.

Identical aircraft 1v1 is usually boring scissors or a balanced turn fight, scraping your way into an advantage.  If you lose, it's all on you.

With an early war ride, you'll win by  flying your ride that much more efficient and exploiting the other plane's weakness and the pilot's mistakes that much more.  Maybe it's an ego thing.

If I lose in a P40 vs. Yak9U, I can put some of the blame on the matchup :D  Convenient double standards :D

Most often in the MA when you find yourself in a P40 or F4F, 90% of your kills come from other pilots' mistakes.

In the end, landing 5 kills in a P40 versus landing 5 kills in a La7 is always more satisfying.  Do more with less.

Couldn't have said it better myself octavius.  Theres something very satisfying about flying well against a "superior" plane.

Win or lose it says something about your personality, I think.  Especially, when you get whacked time and time again and keep coming back in the same ride.

uh, not that it ever happens to us.

You got me on the 51 rope. You put it together, you were workin it.

In the company I keep I suck. The group I search out to play with are much better than I in the thing we all enjoy.

I die the majority of time. For me it's the fun before I die. Yes I'm low, and they all come in high. Yes there's the prospect of taking names in a chitty situation. Yes I die, but some of the fights outnumbered and low in a midwar plane can't be compared to anything else in the game.  I love it.

Thing is, it makes the juices flow. It rocks.

Touching down with a couple in the bag with the cockpit filled with smoke from the hair fire is where it's at.

That's the goal. Doing that is dangerous and a good deal of the time...I die

But when I don't ??

That's why I fly.

;)

The only thing I don't like about the p40 is that when you are in it engaged in a major fight, people follow you around like you are in a 262 or something.  I don't know how to fly it that well so 1 vs.1 is fine, 2 vs. 1 is ok... 3 on 1 I don't win ever in that plane, but with all the attention its like 5 on 1 in a matter of seconds.

Not sure how it got that reputation, but I hope some of you better P40 pilots can change that  :aok

Jeez beet, ain't up to the challenge ??

I'm thinkin of strappin on a P40 for the fun.

It'll be ugly, but them poor bastages that die before the guns will bring a smile.

Because most of the uber-plane-flying late-war pilots want that easy kill and just don't care if their plane out performs it in every way. That's my guess.

I pulled the plug last August, Nopoop. I'd come back if the gameplay improved and/or TOD was introduced and/or big maps were up for serious amounts of time, or we had an RPS so that the early war planes could get a fair shake.

At least the P40 made a bigger impact on my game than the 109E. I was killed by a P40 THREE times in total. But I never died to the 109E. Not one single time.

There is a profound joy in taking up slow, underarmed or otherwise crappy planes.

For those who have had the time to do it all, it doesn't quite cut it to take the trusty plane up and land a few.

These people know that anyone can get a fair kill message in such planes without even pulling their thumb out of their behinds.

No, these guys need something different, something fun.

It's even more satisfying when you're a crappy pilot, like me. ;) The main satisfaction comes from watching your critics twist and bend what they believe to be the dictionary definition of a fight. :lol  I once got into the top 100 by "not fighting".

I started flying the Hurricane because of its short clip, only 91 rpg.
I figured if I flew a plane with very little ammo it would force me to become a better shot. I think it's working :D

Overall though, the Hurricane is just fun to fly. I cant outrun any other fighters, even some bombers can run me down :rofl

It's especially fun to beat overwhelming odds in an early war plane. Last night I beat a 4 - 1 ( 2 La-7's, Spit9, 109), best I have done is a 5 - 1, P-38, Hurricane, La-7, SpitV, 109.

Well..  Ive flown it a few times,  and the one thing i can tell you, is that it doesnt stand a chance against some of the LW planes ive fought against.  Amongst other differences,  no more "lazer" guns is obvious.

The good thing is that the same maneuvers that were pulled off in AH1 can be pulled off in AH2,  the only thing is that sometimes i hesitate thinking it wont work in this version..  Even tho it really does ;)   Stall fighting seems to be the same,  too slow = death..

Just a few key observations..
