Title: Animated water - recommended video cards?
Post by: Skeksis on November 12, 2004, 07:34:08 PM
Greetings.

I recently changed my video card from a Ti4400 to a BFG 6800 OC but still cannot select the animated water.  I am using the Nvidia 61.77 drivers with DirectX 9.0c.

What cards should I be looking into toi enable the animated water?

Thanks,
Skeksis
:)

Same thought. I saw HiTech post that GF4s should allow the water effects, but mine doesn't. Suggestions for new vid card or how to make this one do it? I mdon't care if I get to have it one while I'm fighting, I just want to see what it looks like.

Jaton GeForce 4 MX440 64mb PCI

I only have PCI slots, no AGP.

MX cards lack shader functionality.  The GF4 cards that support the shaders are the Ti4xxx series.

The FX 5xxx/6xxx cards all support the shaders.  Before installing the new card, did you remove the old drivers?

I did, yes. I have the classic Intel Integrated disabled and uninstalled. Just updated nVidia drivers last week.

OOZ, you have an MX card.  They do not have any support for shaders, which is how the animated water works.

I was referring to Skekis, who has a card which supports shaders.  If the drivers were not removed before installing the new ones, then it could cause the problem he is having.

I got the animated water going today by turning on the vertex shading something that gave me problems on iteration of AH2 ago.

It is pretty, a very bright blue and does appear to lap the shore but the 20 to 25 fps lost may not make it worth while.

Trying to solve a problem with Trainz, that I think was also effecting AH2, lead me to my DxDiag tool and I found that the AGP texture support was disabled.  The problem I was having was that certain graphics were not appearing in Trainz and I am pretty sure that the same problem was appearing in AH2 which was leading to lock-ups.

I removed the previous Nvidia drivers and installed the 66.93 set and then fiddled around and activated the Vertex Shading which seems to have solved the problem.

The animated water is very pretty but for some reason the 6800 is still not giving me high performance so I may have to turn that off for a while.
