Title: Went flying today
Post by: Habu on November 14, 2004, 07:07:25 PM
Today I had to move my ultralight to its winter home. There was a 12 kt headwind so the flight that should have taken an hour and a half took almost 3 hours. The temperature was below 0.

Sitting in 100 kph wind in below 0 temperature for 3 hours was actually not that bad. The snowmobile suit was warm enough and so were the boots. Only my hands got cold. Here is a picture a friend took just before I took off.

That's awesome Habu!

I have flown some ultralights before and have always wanted to buy one. I'm jealous....

Did canadien geese follow you while you were up there, I saw that in a movie once. Seriously though, nice ultra light and sounds like a fun trip.

The guy who trained the Canadian Geese is named Bill Lishman. He lives nearby and flys with a couple of the guys in our trike group sometimes. I have never met him myself but hope to next summer.

I bought my trike last summer. It is like a motorcycle in the sky, lot of fun. But in the winter it is just too damn cold usually to fly much.

It is a lot of fun to fly a trike.

I actually flew mostly at 3500 to 2000 on that trip. The higher I went the stronger the headwind got so I dropped down as low as I could.

The lower I got the more mechanical turbulance from the wind I got so I climbed up as high as necessary to get out of the bumps.

You get the picture.

Reminds me of Milt Thompson's (X-15/HL10/etc test pilot) story about crash landing a crop duster in mexico because of an engine stall and shearing an engine mount.  His boss tells him it'll be fine and to fly it back to base in Texas, and being a dumb youngster, he does.

On his flight back, he starts thinking about the engine stall and decides to get some altitude so he can maneuver to a safe landing if the engine quits again.

After a little while, he starts thinking about the sheared engine mount and imagines the engine seperating from the aircraft and the plane becoming completely uncontrollable, so he drops down to low alt so he'd have a chance of survivng a ditch.

After a while, he starts thinking of the stall again, and so for the next hour, he's alternating between altitude and hugging the ground as each fear overpowers the other for a few minutes.

After he lands safely, someone else at the field asks him why he came in under the powerlines at the end of the runway, and he decides it would just be too complicated to explain.
