Title: SP2 - Skuzzy?
Post by: AKcurly on November 14, 2004, 11:36:43 PM
Skuzzy, is there any reason to install SP2?  I use XP for one thing - AH; otherwise, I'm in Linux.

I have seen SP2 mess up some computers while others seem fine with it.

Ok, but do you know of any reason to install it?

Not really.

I think for a general/farmily/work  it is worth it.  Pop up blocking and warnings about active x controls and boxes asking if you are sure about opening some attatchment are actually very useful. They prevent that thing where you click something without really thinking.

However, for a pure games machine that only you use, if you keep firewall/AV up to date, you don't need it.

I have it on both my machines and have noticed no ill effects at all.

Same here, no ill effects at all.  In fact, SP2 cleaned up the firewall functionality so that you can just tell it which sites to allow without hinderance.  Its pretty clean.  I had some CTD issues when I recently got back to playing AH regularly.  Once I added AH to the allowed list, the problem went away.

I installed it on my Hawwaii rig with no problems.  However, after I shut down the Security Center and other useless added services (I had already shut down the security holes that SP2 closed), I couldn't see any good reason to install it on my Guam rig.  Of course, I am the only one using both machines, use hardware/software firewalls, AV scanners, spyware catchers etc, and regularly update everything.

Curley I applied it to both my laptop/desktop and now wish I hadn't. My lappy now won't shut off without a manual prompt via the hot button. SP2's main attributes are security based, but not a whole lot different than can be had by a basic pop-up ad blocker (which Google already provides) a firewall (which I already have) and a bunch of ramped-up internet security features which frankly, are more of a pain than not.

If you're using XP for AH2 only, my advice is to shy away.

Thx, guys.  I use Linux for everything but Aces High (dual boot.)  It sounds like SP2 wouldn't bring me a thing but grief, given my work habits.

Wouldn't it be nice to have AH on Linux :D

I dual boot too, unfortunately, there's just a lot of stuff I do that isn't yet available on Linux.  But its coming.  Make no mistake.

There's a guy (don't recall his name) who ran AH1 via Wine.  He used a subscription version of wine.  Don't know about dx9 and wine or AH2.
