Well, it's been a long road to hoe so far to this point, so why stop here? I'm currently gathering some more authentic recordings to round out some more of this sound pack. So hopefully you should see some of that come to bear fruit within the next few weeks/ month of the holiday season.
I've been receiving a lot of emails about why I have undertaken this sound pack and what is the driving force behind it. I only have one answer - Honestly I do it it for my own enjoyment.
I'm trying to get the most accurate sounds per plane as I can within the AH2 directx sound engine. Now, granted I personally have never been flying in a period piece, but I have had some luxury of being able to listen to actual cockpit recordings of some aircraft. Some of these higher quality recordings make it into the soundpack. Some of the lower fidelity recordings provide a basis to "create" a sound for a certain aircraft or vehicle.
The rate of fire issue was a big thing for me and made me realize how much little things make a difference. Right now I feel the guns are almost perfect. there's some small personal issues that I have with a few sounds, but nothing is really out of whack.
I'm not trying to make a "gamey" sound pack - I want accuracy - if the plane had electric motor driven flaps/gears or hydraulic systems. I'm trying to research the mechanicals of the aircraft, and if I don't have an authentic recording - then I will try to "guess-timate" and create on that would fit. Take the p47 for example - the gear sound is from an actual gear retraction cycle from a p47. Same with the p38 cannon. Mustang engine - taken from in flight. A6Ms - taken from inside cockpit of a zero with the Sakae 21 engine.
One thing that I am currently bound to, as in the fact that I like the results - is the blending of the internal engine sound with the prop noise, light doppler of the external aircraft sounds. Since the AH2 sound engine doesn't use separate internal/external files - the blending that I do, to me, creates a good "perception" of aircraft flying by from an external listening position, as well as sounding decent when flying from an internal perspective.
Also, I wil be normalizing and going back to a set sounds config of all levels at 80 for the next version. To try to combat some of the volume discrepencies between aircraft.
Anyway - I'm open to suggestion and thoughts about the pack.
-
I believe that the FM2 and the F4F-4 had manual flaps that was deployed by a hand crank, I dont believe it was electronic.
-
Waffle thanks for your effort. I imagine on speakers they rock. On a cheap set of labtec head phones they don't. They're flat, too much treble and no midrange.
I fiddled with settings on my end and just couldn't get it right. As a side note ALL of the soundpacks being released by sound guys with the exception of mitsu's have the same problem. Realplayer and CD's on cheap headphones rock, so I know it's in the "mix".
As an experiment, pick up a set of 25 dollar labtecs take a "plane" and fiddle the values on your end. When the mix on cheapo's is right, see how it transposes to speakers. Do a mix to the lowest common denominater. Akin to HT playin the game on a 800 P3.
I'd be interested in the result and would love to be able to incorporate your sounds into my game.
Thanks for your contributions, I just wanna use them :D
-
I'm currently using the planetronics to do all the editing/mixing on as of now - Haven't heard them in surround or on a system with a subwoofer.
I originally started this pack series as:
1.) something different than what was available.
2.) Something that had real sounds in it..not stuff complied from other games, ect....(this is the toughest one for authenticity - i'm still fighting it :) )
3.) A soundpack that wouldn't interfere with vocal transmissions.
It's funny that you say they have to much "high-end" because most sounds have a low pass filter set to around 6-10k. (otherwords - rolled back the treble. I was doing this to "simulate" using headphones in the plane...originally. Lately though, with the new guns I've stepped back from this. Seems the treble will give more attack for impacts and guns - where the volumes dont need to be so loud.
I know one thing that is different from some other packs is that I'm not boosting the volume so much as to create digital clipping. I'm trying to preserve some of the actual sound wave, which in turn, gives the files room to "breathe", if that makes sense. But as some folks notice, this is going to be a lower output volume than what everyone is used to. It was a long/debate here on my end. For example, you ever notice how some music cds are louder than others? Some folks at the cd mastering labs/record labels think that when their song comes on the jukebox - it needs to be louder than others or stand out more. Well they compress it and boost the levels so much, that you end up having a loud "flat" sounding record. Becuse they've boosted/compressed, ect...to get it loud, they sucked the life and dynamics out of it. Take a current rock band say like "Jet" vs some one like Chris Isaak or Nora Jones. So you put in Jets album and get it to a good decent level, then put in one of the others. Your going to have to turn them up. BUT what you can hear when you turn up the later twos albums is that you're "in" the room. It sounds more natural to the ear. You can her nuances in dynamics that you loose when you compress and boost volumes.
It's a big can of worms, and I'm dealing with it and trying to improve some of levels and the way the interact. Hence going back to the levels set at 80. that way I can set it by gain in the individual wav file, then people can tweak to their liking. Again folks will say the flaps and gears are probably to low, but from the recordings I've heard, flaps and gears are noticible, but they dont jump out. But again, they have more of a tactile feel to them
as you know when they are actauted by the way the airflow changes.
anyway - off on a tangent :)
Try this sound config: This is the one im currently using with the plantronics headset/mic.
you can copy this. then open up your Aces High/Settings / sounds.cfg (used notepad) delete what's in there and then past the below settings in.

Like the way you have the "doppler" in with the engine sounds. Good stuff, I'll fiddle it.
-
Waffle,
I have a suggestion, again its the low volume on the flaps, gear, slats, etc. I understand that in real life the engine noise drowned out pretty much everything... But one advantage in real life is that when flaps were lowered, a pilot could 'feel' it physically... in spite of the best efforts to date the feel that pilots experience is not simulated at all. But more volume would help make up for the lack of the feel... I really like your sound pack and even after reducing engine volume it can be difficult to hear in a fight with the radio channels going, check 6's and gunfire. - just a suggestion... Thanks for all of the effort!
-
I've had the pack for a while now and I don't have any problem hearing the flaps or landing gear. Even if you do have problems, your gauges are only a glance away.

oy - the work to do...lmao
I decided to go back to setting levels as based on the default setting of sounds at 80. Thats in the sounds setup or your sounds config. Unfortuneatly, I did some editing when I had my settings messed with so I'm in the process of changing levels and normalizing sound files to fit withint he new stock set levels.
Currently things are going well. I've tried a few of the planes that I've done online and they seem to work good with Vox communications without having to use the "vox effect" slider, where the sounds drop out when some one talks on vox.
I will also be normalizing and rediting some of the envioronmental sounds of explosions, ect... looking at the idea of having a few different explosions from bombers which would have the higher alt "thunder sound" instead of the high attack explosions due to proximity.
All in all, it's a complete overhaul of the previous pack, since I have to change levels. So while i'm changing levels, I'm also editing stuff...Should hopefully have it close to done by 15-21st of Dec. Never know - might be sooner.
So fars heres a fix list of what has been accomplished for the next pack
Tempest / Typhoon - new engine start sequence as well as new engine sound, rework of the hispano sounds in these birds.
109G6 / 109 G2 / 109 G10 - Authentic New engine start/shutdown sequences, as well as new authentic engine sounds
(sampled from Black 6, with db605 from Duxford England)
New flaps as per operational sound from Black 6,
Edited gear and slats for level/tone as well.
Increase some of the air disruption in the stall for all ge planes
Lowered pitch of stress. New rocket sound for all GE planes
Slight editing to cannon tones and gun levels to appropriate levels.
109E4 /F4 - New engine sounds as wells as changes listed above for the other 109s.
Me163 - increased pitch of rocket/engine..edited flaps.
Me262: edited start/shutdown sequence, New engine sounds. New flaps sound as well as edited gear sound.
FW190s - New start sounds for all the 190s. Adjusted guns as wells as flaps/gears for volume
Adjusted all Engines sounds for some more prop noise as well as higher RPM
JU88 - new engine sounds and start shutdown, flaps, gears adjusted
Ju87 - new start/shutdown - engine sound reedited for rpm.
P38 - New Engine sounds and start/shutdown sequence. Edited Gears/Flaps. Tailored bomb drops and Rockets sounds. (sound samples from Lefty Gardners p38)
P51d - New Engine sounds and start sequence. New flaps. (sound samples from Bob Love's p51d)

Hi Waffel,
I was wondering if you could do a quick post as to how to install your sounds and skins? I downloaded the complete pack but to be honest don't know what needs deleted (if anything) and where I place these new items? If yourself or anyone who reads this and knows how could do a quick run through I'd really appreciate it. Thanks:)
EDIT: OOOPS! Just saw the installation guide on the web site. DUH!:rofl All installed, sounds amazing Waffle:aok
-
Waffle love your sounds with a big but.
I am getting game lock ups with them, infrequent but, i never get lock ups using Mitsus old sound pack.
I have replaced one sound and thats the stall sound only.
As i nearly always fly F4U it of course is the only vehicle i can comment on.
Anybody else suffering or just me ?
-
yeah - i noticed some of the larger stereo files will cause that when they first are played...sometimes the winds / stalls will cause that. I had some in there that were 16/44hz, which I've changed back to 33kz, and some of the larger stereo files, I dropped to 8bit to try to remedy this with next version,
-
3.2 is out and available at wafflesounds site - link in first post or below in sig.
-
3.2 Download - Make sure you delete your "sounds.cfg" file from your settings folder! Then you can increase external engine sound to 100.
-
Waffle any chance of the stall sound but without the stupid ticking or buzzing ?
Talk about an immersion killer.
-
Wind buffetting sound Cav? Thats what I use.
-
stall clicker used on several us planes. I can post a wind onlt stall if you want.
-
How about mixing it up for the US planes?
A wind buffet sound in the background, and a more pronounced clicking too?
-
I believe most of them have the wind buffet, but there might be some that just have the click - like the c47s - not sure - I know the 38 and 51d have the buffet and click. Would reccomend the p51d stall as that one has the most "buffet" in the stall.
BTW 214th - are you stil getting lockups. I havent seen any on my system due to larger files.
-
just downloaded 3.2 from your site, tried to instal says some files are currupt so it cancels.
-
Must be a corrupt download. Try again - if you still have problems, I believe someone has a mirror site up - I just need to locate it.
-
To be clear i hate any sort of buzz or clicking in my stall sounds.
All i want to use is a wind buffeting the wings sound.
I have one i have been using for years in fact it came from EAW a long time ago.
Waffle the lock ups are wierd i begin to believe they only happen in the F4U-1 which i use a lot.
However turns out that at least is not related to your sounds, as it happens with Mitsus as well now.
I think it may be related to F4U-1 in that map.
Never suffered the lock flying any other planes.
-
same here with the stall sounds cavelier, im not sure where i got my buffeting sound, but its alot more realistic than a buzz or what ever sound they got out there thate mechanicly created. I hope i never loose it or im screwed lol .
-
I'll get around to posting a buffet sound here in this thread by tonight (12/16)
Eilif - did the download eventually work?
-
na, well this time it was just an insanely slow download speed ill try again tonight. thanks for the active updates, i lookforward to checking this latest version out.
-
wow your gunsites are the best ive seen, not the usual solid color ones.
-
I just posted some gunsights, and the web stats are still going nuts from downloads, ect....
so there's probably alot of bandwith being eaten.
-
got it working finaly, very good i must say, and my yes does the p38 sound great! just gotta plop in my buffeting sound and im set!
-
Hey Waffle, I've got some very nice gun sounds if you wanna use them in your next pack. The RPM for each is correct.
You don't have to use them, but you should at least try them :D .
-
here's a wind buffet loop - should be pretty quiet - no pops..stereo wind hard to edit without pops..lol
windonlystall (http://www.dangreve.com/windstall.zip)
-
waffle is there? any way to deaden the bass on 38 eng wave
a wee bit or can i do something on my end its makin my headset distort
-
cool waffle, cant wait to try it out.
-
Waffle, I've religiously downloaded and used your sound packs from the very beginning but I have a problem with the most recent one.
The 'wind' noise has too much noise on it, imho, if you're in a fast ride like a 262 its overpowering.
My apologies, just an observation.
-
Delirium - check out this thread:

-
Waffle BAS :D Thx lots, just d/l'd ur Wafflesounds 3.2 & what a
difference it makes, the games are more exciting & fun, the sounds realistic :p Kudos 2 u on a job well done :aok
Cheers,
Happy1 :D
-
Waffle, may I use or edit your P-38 engine sound?
regards,
-
Hey Mitsu - srry for the delay - just noticed...
I don't think that you'll be able to get a good sample out of it due to the external sound thats mixed into the loop. not sure though.
-
I just cut mp3 compress noise and mixed turbin noise on your original p38 eng sound. I want to use it in msc next patch if you allow to use it.
Thanks.
-
I'll let you (and only you) use it.....
Just be sure to let it be known where it came from...lol
BTW - the file has an external prop noise already mixed in....
that's what i was talking about it possibly being hard to make a new loop out of...
I'd like to hear it before you release it though.
Everyone getting all geared up for 2.02 release...
I got nothing new....Well...maybe something....real small patch:)
-
Thanks, I'll upload it soon.
BTW I was away from AH world...new version is out today...
so I returned again. :-/ I'll work for small patch too.
-
yeah - Skuzzy asked what I was doing playing AH...he said that I have work to do.....
Checking out sound changes now....lmao
Looks like I'll have to do a patch that I wasn't planning on .... :)
-
new sound found - debris.wav. :p
-
updates / patches out are done and out the door - Gunsights and P38 sounds.....
now I can turn my attention back to 3d modeling :)
-
woot, thanks.
-
new patch for some of the sights out -
new patch has no alpha files in it - so gunsights will be brighter
-
Waffle don't know if you caught it, I'm downloading your latest soundpack now. There's another new sound whlhit3. BTW great gunsights lost my old one yesterday decided to try yours I am impressed it's sorta what I was trying to do only way better!
on the great work bud :)
-
I'll take a look at that wheelhit3 sample, but I think it might've been leftover from one of my bastardized editing sessions :)
I think AH uses a file called Tire.wav off the top off my head
-
whlhit3 came default with 2.02 along with debris AND you already have it in your soundpack just finished downloading it. :)
-
Waffle-
Are the separate pack's on your webpage the same as those contained in the full download? I haven't been able to get the full download, and after I started downloading the smaller packs, I noticed that you'd updated some stuff.
Also, great job on the gunsights, I like them.
Cheers,
hub
-
yes the smaller packs are whats on the current pack. The only thing that's not contained in those folders are the "base pack" sounds" which are things like scrpaing noises, hits, some damge ect.... as well as different versions of the defaults
-
I think some of the sounds were replaced with default souns in 2.02. For example I think the Mosquitoe's guns are back to normal.
-
hey Sullie - go try to download the mossie sounds off of the website - under british planes. See if that changes anything. Just place the downloaded mossie6 folder in your sounds folder - it will ask to overwrite the other mossie6 file - check yes.
-
Hey waffle,
Like to start by saying excellent job on your sound pack. I love it. I was using 3.2, and just downloaded 3.3. The only thing that I would suggest is a louder dive whistle in the ju-87.
Ok, here's my question - can I get your last sights? I don't really like the new ones. They are better than the default game sights, but I really liked the old BritshM2. I don't like the new one.
I recently deleted Aces High, and tried to reload it to fix some problems I was having. I didn't save my sights file, because I thought I could just reload them from your site again; and I was going to download the new sounds anyway. I would really like to get the sights with the alpha files agian. I think they look much more realistic. Hope you can help me.
-
I don't think I have the old sights - will have to look. I reformated a while back - but there might be a copy of em on a backup firewire drive.
BTW - have you tried adjusting the alpha slider to the right some in the gunsight setup? They're pretty much the same sights - they all fade to white when against the sky - there's nothing to be done about that.
-
It's not the alpha that bothers me. They are good sights, but I just like the old British M2 sight a lot. The look is different in the new ones, and I liked the alpha property in the old set.
-
Heres the old sights:
oldsights (http://www.dangreve.com/oldsights.exe)
And someone was looking for old windsounds - believe might've been sunking - here they are.
windsounds
(http://www.dangreve.com/Windsoundsbywaffle.exe)
-
Waffle,
Thanks, but those are not the ones I had last time. The ones that I need are the sights in the flash movie on your index page. In particular, I need the British M2 sight.
This one.
-
Take that Image right there and convert it to a 256x256 bitmap.
Then rename it BritisH M2.BMP (i think thats what I used) and place it in your gunsights folder
You'll have to upsize it a few pixels - or I can do it for you if you dont have the software
-
I actually did that right before I checked this post using Photoshop CS. It's a little darker than before, but that's ok. I wanted it a little darker anyway. Thanks a lot.
-
FYI - some of the latest patches by HTC have been over writing sounds. So if you're noticing things like different ack sounds, sirens, ect....you'll have to reinstall the soundpack. Would recommend just downloading the base pack, as that contains all the edited default sounds for the Wafflesounds series.
-
Hmm waffle how do you install thwe sounds for like custom planes Ie i want the specific 109 sound. I got the basic thing. I need to know what i do in order to install the custom sounds, not the pack into the folder. A little help?
-
if you installed the basic pack - then all you have to do is goto the country specific plane pages - click on a plane - download it / extract it - place the extracted folder in your "sounds" folder.
Then your sounds folder should have new folders as you download them.
-
ok thankyou waffle your sounds sound very cool, especiely the F4's rumble
-
Heh they are SO good i blew one of my speakers out!
Most realistic (and expensive) engine hit EVAH!
:)
-
Glad I could be of assistance.....lol
-
Regarding Nopoops comments about the pitch, he's spot-on. But not because of the headphones.
If you play the engine sound from windows, it sounds fine. However it sounds horrible in AH2 because you only play full pitch when at WEP! That's right, when you're not at WEP you get a dull, low pitch sounding engine. Have to take that into consideration when mixing it. Have to mix it too high, then have it get lowered in-game to normal throttle.
-
All engine sounds have been transposed up to where at the lowest idle it sounds as close as I could tell to recordings.
At full throttle/wep I increased pitch to where the engines sounded close to the recordings i have of planes at take-off power, as well as in acrobatic performances. WEP continues the pitch transposing a little higher.
-
i had same prob
*solution for me*
i turned pc volume to just under half prob fixed
btw waffles 38 eng sounds give me wood:lol
-
They "wood" (pun intended)
-
Hi guys
I see the sounds and gunsight but i dont see any downloads for the skins...?
Kan
-
pulled the skins off of the site - you can get em in game :)
-
Waffle how come your other check 6 calls dont work?
Only one works in game.
-
I think I set it up where you have to place the "check 6" you want into the plane sound folder manually.
-
Waffle
and everyone.
What if soundpack had a russian and german check 6?
Russian is my first language, if you dont mind i could record check 6 in russian and send it to Waffle.I'm sure there are some german speaking players, they could do the same.
Let me know what you think
Best regards
-
I'd be down with that - don't have much time right now, but could be cool.
-
FYI, I downloaded 3.3 complete pack. In middle of extracting files got error msg stating that there are corrupt files in 202 eng sounds.
-
I've gotten reports of corrupt downloads, but I cant replicate the problem. Usually redownloading helps, or you can just download the individual folder (of the file that was corrupted) from the site.
-
Pulled down the wafflesounds sound downloads due to a few larger than expected bills due to communities outside of the Aces High community hot-linking directly to the file downloads and increasing my bandwith usage.
Hopefully I will have them back when I can figure out a way to remedy this.
The gun sites are still available.
-
I ended up going on your site and finding out your sounds had been pulled... I ended up hooking up my old HD to my new computer just to use them! :)
I hope you get 'em back up, they do a great service to the community.
-
Man I just did a fresh install and now I see I can't get your sound pack!!!
-
All...
Any chance anyone has this pack still zipped up? Willing to email, perhaps? Please? Waffle's work was really good, and I'd like to get my hands on it again.
Thanks in advance to anyone who'll help!
P.S. IMHO...we could use some improved explosion sounds. Standards sounds have improved over AH1, but still too quick, and not enough depth and rumble for me. Unfortunately, I do not possess the time nor the skills to do something about it myself!
to all of you who do all this extra sound, skinning and planning work. You folks surely do improve the game!
-
I have his old pack!. I'll upload later huge file ;)
-
Hey waffle, I have a question.
Since the new version of AHII was released, I was wondering, when and if you will be getting sounds for the new planes (Spit MK XVI, Spit XIII, BF 109 H 14... At least I think it's "H 14"). I'm sure we would all enjoy the realistic sounds of these planes.
Thanks...
-
Probably wont be for awhile before I update / release new sounds...
As for the new planes / you can make a new folder with the plane name and copy sounds from another variants into the new folder...
So make a 109k4 folder and take the 109g14 folders sounds and copy/paste them into the newly created 109k4 folder.
-
Chimp...you're a champ! I look forward to gettin' at 'em.
Thanks much! :aok
-
Thanks for the Heads-up Waffle, but like I mentioned, Just a question.

Sound packs.......this is new to me. I was watching somthing about the pacific the other day and those 50 sounded way different.
Can someone explain how these sound packs work? Will it sound more realistic? Wow i have been playing since last november and i never heard of this, i must be asleep at the wheel:lol
-
Sound pack gives a more realistic sound to each plane tank ack and so on. you must download the sound pack then unzip it.
Before you download you must first change the name of your sound file in aces high folder. I changed mine to "sounds1".
Once this is done you can name the new file "sounds". Once the downloaded file is unzipped copy it and past it in aces high folder.
Thats it.
-
Now i want them, i was watchin films with f4u and i sounds completely different from the game, why doesnt htc just use these sounds to begin with.
-
It would make the install file unnecessarily huge. The default sounds help keep the size to a minimum.
