I figured the Amerihaters on this board would be all over the story of a Marine shooting two wounded inusrgents on the ground. Check your favorite news site for a link.

So did I.
Was going to start the thread myself about it but decided to wait to see if anyone else had something to say about it.
Far as Im concerned the marine was justified.
Particularly since it seems to be becomming common practice for such woulded insurgents to play dead untill one of our guys gets close then opens fire on our guys.
If I were in his place I wouldnt have even bothered saying anything. I would have just shot at the slightest movement.
If the insurgent didnt want to die he shoulda have stayed in the city.
Its not like they didnt know we were comming.
This has to be the most advertised attack in military history
Another point. In doing that he did something the insurgents actually understand.
The rest of the world may not like it
But what we're dealing with here is a mindset unlike the rest of the world.
They dont "get" compassion and see it as weak.
Execution they "get"

They will be here soon enough, first they gotta spank that poor monkey while watching the news clip.

I'm reserving major judgment either way. let the Corps investigate it. If the kid did something wrong they'll find out and punish accordingly. But I am obviously biased here to give the benifit of the doubt and agree partially w/ drediock that there were reports that they've been running into wounded/dead enemys w/ grenades and other forms of boobie traps.

Isn't his silver star citation a witness?

When you hear one of the soldiers saying "he's faking being dead" pretty much sum's up the state of their mind... reminds me of an old saying... "It's better to be tried by 12 then be carried off by six".

Asked what it saw, the Silver Star pushed it's way through the throng of reporters, issued a terse "No Comment", climbed into the limosine and departed for the airport.

Well . God forbid, perhaps the strawmen aren't Amerihaters but people with souls and convictions that just happen to disagree with you. God forbid it be that simple.

Lay off Kerry and his citations. You were'nt there.
I say it's not our call to pass judgement on this Marine. The JAG will do an investigation and a take it from there. In his shoes, I may have done the same thing.
-
According to some of the people who WERE there, Kerry wasn't there for about half of at least the most famous one.
I do find it VERY interesting and amusing that you didn't bother to comment at all either way, until Kerry's name was brought up.

Virgil, forgive me for actually playing AH for a few hours before reading the BBS. Why don't we talk about the heroin addict you use as an avatar instead?
-
I saw the video tape tonight on CBS (Audio was played with a still of the room scene after it was dubbed 'too graphic' for television) and I listened to the voices.
"He's playing opossom"
"He's f**king pretending to be dead"
"He's Breathing"
I'm in BDU's and recently watched a bunch of my buddies get wounded or killed. I see one of the bad guys on the ground doing what I think in the next 5 seconds might cause me or my buddies to die...that guy is getting 3 rounds in his chest no questions asked.
Anyone who wants to see that kid disciplined I only have 3 words for you, go f*ck yourself.
That's where I stand on this issue.
-
Sites reported a Marine in the same unit had been killed just a day earlier when he tended to the booby-trapped dead body of an insurgent.

This thread was tardiffic: the 11 posts at the beginning were just bashing of 'amerihaters' by 'good citizens' on the account of what the 2nd group was thinking that the 1st group should already have said to fit into the name that the 2nd group gave to the 1st group....*
Then SOB spoiled it with wise words.
* it's okay if you need to read it more than twice to understand. It's a long way beyond logic and common sense.

Shut up.
Try to imagine being in a situation where your life is so tenuous it could be extinguished in a moment. Try to imagine a situation where other members of your unit have been killed by bad guys playing possum. Try to imagine deciding whether you should save your life, your friends life, or the life of someone whose entire being is to kill you and yours......
I have no issues with the military sorting this out.

That the best you can answer with? You need to attack Steve McQueen (who is DEAD, and has nothing to do with this, and cannot speak up for himself) to protect John Kerry? How truly sad of you. Of course, there's no reason at all to expect better of you.
One thing is for sure, Steve McQueen didn't hide his record as a United States Marine, he didn't lie about his fellow soldiers to dishonor them while trying to advance his "career", and he didn't need Jimmy Carter (the clown prince of pardons for scumbags) to get him an honorable discharge.
Your "hero" on the other hand, had to get his honorable discharge years after he left the service, and despite running on his military "record" refused to sign for a full release of his military records. Not to mention the fact he did that while DEMANDING George W. Bush release all of his. Thing is, George W. Bush DID release his. Why don't you ask your "hero" why he hides his FBI records as well?
Yes, rpm, while you bad mouth Steve McQueen, go get your scumbag hero and demand he release ALL of his military records, and the FBI records as well.

The sole purpose of that post is to illustrate how a citation could not actually be a witness, but is rather a result of witness testimony.

Naa, Virgil is still having post election anxiety syndrome. He needs to attack someone completely uninvolved with the subject at hand and still has Swiftus Boatorum Anxietus. Getting past the Kerrybushmcqueen bashing and back to the subject... These guys have been close fighting for over 30 hours without sleep. I can only have my own opinions from what I hear from the news.
War is hell, the news media is right there along side of these guys ( and gals) fighting. NEVER have we've seen war footage that is close up and personal every step of the way. We will see the good and bad of the war. I'm certain WW2 had more atrocities, but the lack of the media at that time never brought this to light.
These soldiers have come across dead bodies booby trapped, and this soldier they speak about was shot in the face the day earlier. They didn't know the exact facts of what/where/who fighting took place at that place earlier in the day. With all this confusion and mayhem I personally could see why he reacted in the way he did. I'm not sure under the same circumstances I would of reacted differently. I hope I would have the compassion to react differently, but I'm sure if 100 people WERE to be in the same circumstance you would have 50 different outcomes.
I am not passing judgement pro or con on this soldier, Nor do I want to play "monday morning quarterback" these are normal people put in horrible positions during war. It is sad they are there. War is horrible, for both sides.
With every step these soldiers don't know what lies around the corner, could be boobytrapped, could be an old lady strapped with explosives. It's hard enought to fight a war were you can't SEE the enemy, let alone having a camera following your every move, to ensure you "fight fair" within moral and legal "Rules". This is a war unlike all wars. The standard "Rules" of war went out the window long before we arrived. Firing gernades from a "church" sending human bombs into crowds, where are the rules????

I didn't know that mcqueen was a junkie. He still if one of the coolest actors we ever had.. I find it hard to believe that he couldn't drive that Mustang in the movie since he was an accomplished race car driver and mororcyclist. It is possible that some of the stunts were over his ability tho.
as for the topic... play ded and get shot in the head. You want to blame someone... blame the brilliant "freedo fighter" who thought up that tactic. It's a war... if the guy told me he thought the wounded guy was a danger then that is damn well good enough for me..... especially considering the history of the war criminals he is fighting.

Some of you people have no idea what it is like in these situations and should not be so quick to judge. Your opinions are more or less worthless. If you really think you'd be making well thought-out, rational decisions after many hours of combat in tight quarters you are seriously kidding yourselves. These guys are working on training and guts. I'm all for holding our troops to a standard, but **** happens in the heat of battle. Don't blame the guy who shot them, blame the unit that let these wounded guys sit there for day.

Peter Yates said in an interview that McQueen hounded him to let him drive. In the first shot (and the only one to make the movie) McQueen oversteered the car and spun out almost taking out the camera crew. It did make for a nice unplanned close-up of McQueen. The rest of the chase was driven by Bud Ekins.
Now, back to the subject. After watching the evening news I'm afraid this may become a catalyst for more insurgents and anti-americanism. Al-Jazeera is supposedly running the video repeatedly and highlighting movement and blood stains on the now dead unarmed man. I hate that this happened, especially since there seemed to be international and internal Iraqi support for our troops cleaning out Fallujah. This is a lose / lose situation. As I said before, if I were in the Marine's boots I may have done the exact same thing.

If no one's noticed, the rules of war as set by the Geneva Convention aren't really a high priority on these guys list. If you are in that town, you are a bad guy. You know what's REALLY sad. You had to go hacking on a dead man just because you didn't like what I said about your zero, err, hero, and a picture of Steve McQueen just happens to be my avatar. That is just typical of gutless liberal garbage. The best you have to defend Kerry with is an attack on a dead man that has nothing to do with the agruement. Of course, to expect anything less from a Kerry supporter would be ludicrous.
Hell, you can't even attack me or my statement about Kerry. You REALLY are pitiful.
Why don't we change the subject back to that loser you backed for president? Or can you not deal with the fact that he was not even close to the hero he wrote himself up to be? Or the fact that JOHN KERRY is the ONLY person who ever recommended JOHN KERRY for a citation in an after action report? Or that JOHN KERRY is the only person who put JOHN KERRY in for a Purple Heart, and that none of the claims are actually verified by anyone but KERRY?
Or don't you want to talk about that? Of course you don't. So divert the attention to a dead actor who has not a damned thing to do with any of the subjects at hand. Because you would lose the arguement just like that pompous self inflated loser you backed lost the race.

You don't have anything to tell. I'm not in any blind rage, I don't have a crush on anyone. And like I said, if the best you have is accusations of homosexuality, then you should go back to debating the grade schoolers, they're a lot closer to your mental age and IQ level. If you don't want to be grouped with the liberals and their homosexual fantasies, then don't join up with them in their little hissies. Act like them, and be considered one of them. Or don't, it's your choice.
I don't love the guy, I just think he was pretty cool, and in general a decent guy. He went through being abandoned as a child, being in reform school, joined the Marines, served honorably, and had a pretty good career. He was a good racecar driver, and a good motorcycle rider as well. The guy had some drug problems (everything I've read says pot and cocaine) and recovered. And he never forgot where he came from or those who helped him. He never disgraced those he served with. He went back to the reform school and worked with the kids. He donated to them while he lived and left them more when he died. He lived life on his own terms, and went out fighting.

rpm..geeze... I drive ok but... a friend of mine is in the shelby club.. he races a cobra replica and has a shellby gt 350 that he also races. I drove the car and had a real hard time... give me a couple hours track time and I bet I could do a lot better tho... the mustangs were evil handlers tho.
still li8ke mcqueen... apprently he had his heroin addiction under more control than most since he functioned pretty well to the end. Nash can tell you more about how it works than me and... he's a kerrie voter too..
It all boils down to... who would you rather hang out with around race cars and motorcycles... kerrie and nash or a living Steve Mcqueen? some of the greatest motorcycle and race car drivers in the world hung out with Mcqeen and enjoyed his company and respected his driving abilities.
maybe you like sean penn or alic baldwin better?

I just answered a poll in the local news station here, about whether or not I thought the actions of the Marine in question were correct, based on what I knew so far. The thing that surprised me was that, so far, 61% of those who answered the question thought he did the right thing, and that he was protecting himself and the other soldiers. Just surprised me that the number is that high in support. This was a poll done by the NBC news affiliate here in Houston.
