Best way to escort is to keep ahead of the buffs and keep the nme low and away, don't have to kill the nme, just force them low where they aren't a threat.  This is best accomplished by sweeping ahead of the buffs and catching nme a/c while they are climbing, not when they are already in position to attack.

Mako's right. Escort doesn't necessarily mean one has to stick by the buffs all the time. Historically, this sort of close range escort proved to be less effective than free-range pre-bombing sweeps by fighters.

When escorting, stay high above the buffs, fly about 5~10 minutes ahead of their flight path and sweep. You don't have to necessarily shoot anything down. Just keep the enemy planes low. I have seen many "escorts" fail, because they are too eager for getiing kills.

Just keep them low. When after reaching target destination, stay above the field and keep swatting the people trying to crawl up. Keep them low. If there are enough numbers(like 8~10 escorts), send about 1/3rd of the escorts to the nearest field of the target destination and CAP there.

'scort is made easier too by having the buffs stay in formation for as long as possible.  I know one bomber group (it started with a K and ended in G200  :)) I would 'scort sometimes great formation flyers but when they got to target they would split up so as not to drop on the same target.  It made for extremely tuff duty trying to keep track of who needed help, but these guys are deadly in a buff with or without a scort anyways.
