Title: Making Skins

Could one of you skin'ers give me the basic run through on how you edit your skins in your editer? I've never tried to make a skin and today just for fun I took a wack at it and ran into a number of problems. Like how to use layers, and how to keep fine detail with 256 color? I also had a problem with keeping the small metal lines in place without over coloring them.
