Yesterday I was surprised by a La7 while fighting a Spit. I saw it comming like a rocket from the deck and firing, two "clangs" and a sudden feel of control lose in my A8, right wingtip gone. I retrimed the plane and dived on the deck trying to head home with the La7 diving at my six. Once I was fast enough and more or less stable I checked my six, La7 was there, 1.5k but no - sign at the icon. Without the wingtip my only hope was to fly as low as possible, may be the La7 would eat some hill. But now the sign was clear, a +, and range was 2.0k. I checked speed 410 mph, but, to my surprise, the A8 was losing speed very slowly. The conclussion was clear, the drag lost with the wingtip was much more than the drag gained with the extra AOA to compensate the lack of lift. Should it be this way?
-
nope.
-
because you had missing wing tip i think........cause i fought spits shot wing off then they run off outrunning so im guessing the wing is it.......
-
Were you useing rudder imput to hold it straight or otherwise moving surfaces to hold position level?
-
no.
the wingtip itself creates less drag, but the reduced wingspan also increases induced drag. slipping or the rudder required to avoid it also increase drag. AOA doesn't change much, most lift is created at the center of the wing anyway.

at 410 mph I only needed to keep the WEP on to compensate the roll tendency to the right and a bit of left aileron input. Much later, now near my base and with the La7 3k away, I decreased speed trying to align with the runaway, now I really needed to compensate all the way with full rudder and was only barely able to to perform wide 360 turns near my town. Landing the plane was much more difficult than with AH1 in same circumstances.

The fastest thing in the game is the "clipped wing" 152 hehe.

Had an F4U do this to me the other day. Only he had both wings in tact. he went from 1k to 2.5K out on the deck. I guess the La7 is not that fast after all

lala drivers just aren't skilled enough to calibrated their throttle to go to full power :lol

You were much safer with the LA comming at you from behind then an LA comming at you from the front:D

Managed to get a goon well over 300mph straight and level with both wingtips missing :D

This seems to be a bug in the FM. Usually a plane doesnt have the advantage of less drag when a signifikant part of the wing is shot off. Just as ccvi explained, you need to counter the roll, which will bring drag. I had something like that happen too, but I dont think its a behaviour to be expected in real life (tm).
But...
HT: would you be so kind and measure your RV's top speed, saw a quarter of a wing off and see if you get faster? You know, that could be accepted as proof :)

Looks like a bug of the FM. A damaged wing should produce much more drag, not make you an F16.

Im not saying this is your case... but...
Most La7 pilots "live" on the deck. They know they got good speed there so they dont climb to get E.
F4U´s do have good speed on the deck and are extreamly good divers. So most F4U´s come diving down from alt converting E to speed.
This is why F4Us outrun La7s.
This is how I chase down La7s in my Yak. I just dive in behind them.
If this IS you then try using more alt and always build your alt up when there are no targets around you.

Nop, we were both at 5K but he decided to go for the deck when he saw the lala. I dove behind him and chased for 3!!, ok 2.5, sectors just see who he was. The guy just kept building speed. We flew over 2 fields and 1 town in hopes that the ack would get me. Finally, he figured he did not want to go for a 3rd field or maby one was not available if he just flew strait so he turned back for the field we just passed. He lived for about 20 secs after that.
ok, I just have to do this. Just could not let it go,
Soooo, you dive beind LA7s in a Yak because the F4Us are good divers? :D JK
