Title: Looking for a game
Post by: airbumba on November 24, 2004, 02:33:20 PM
Hey guys:

I'm looking for a strategy sorta war game, without heavy graphics , something that a machine just making the AH2 cut could play.

I had a game way back, Midway , I think. You placed your ships, planes atc. then let the computer make it's move and dealt with the outcome. I'm looking for somethin like that.

Anyone know of any, it'd be appreciated.
TIA.

Civ III would work, as long as you turn off movement & animations half-way through a game. Once you've conquered a few countries & ethnically cleansed the cities (no joke, it's great for production when you uh.. re-staff with your own guys) and have a couple hundred units moving, your game speed takes a massive hit.

Then when you beat the living crap out of your computer when a man with an axe kills a modern tank... your FPS becomes much better.

Harpoon Classic 2002 Gold (http://advancedgaming.biz/) ... you can d/l full version and play GIUK unregistered

Or check out the  Underdogs (http://www.the-underdogs.org/) for some older strat games (I got a copy of a classic wargame Third Reich from there)

Try the Close Combat series of games, real time but totally different than say command and conquer or warcraft.

As Curval said Uncommon Valor

or it's big brother War in the Pacific

For pure land combat I am a fan of  Korsun Pocket (and it's expansion Across the Dnepr),
and they have new one in the series Battles in Normandy.

All are available from http://www.matrixgames.com

I played the free release of the Ardennes, and are thinking about getting Dnepr.

I'm a big fan of SSG since the c-64 days

Thanks guys, lots to go check out now. I've decided to take this winter off, no stinking snow removal this year. So i'll have free time to play around, and since I plan to MASTER AH by January, that leaves me much free time. (hehe ;)   )

Doobs, ever the smartprettythang.

A REAL war game would be starting at one end of Doobs trailer park with a 24, some free teeth coupons from the local dentist and $100 of food stamps, and trying to get to the other end.   hehe.

Thanks again guys .

What he said. Big time strategy, many different skill levels. Best solitaire computer game i've played. I still get back into it now and then. You have to take some time to learn it, but that goes with any game of strategy. I believe you can even find it for 5 bucks on ebay. It is ww2 based.

Oh, it is not only solitaire, you can play it online with someone else, never tried it though.
