Is Firefox worth the competetion?
I hope Firefox does not turn out like Netscape :lol
-
Anything is better.
Another option I use is Opera.
http://www.opera.com/ (http://Opera)
-
I like FireFox better the IE. Seems somewhat faster on my PC and has pop up blockers and more goodies.
-
Love Firefox, hate IE and dislike Opera.
-
there about equal...
the one or two things that it does better is counterballanced by the sheer difficulty of getting plugins to actually work...

yeah... plugins and firefox can be difficult at times. flash is one example
-
I've been using Firefox since v0.3 (was called Phoenix or something then...), that's over two years now. Haven't had too many problems, with flash or plugins. (Oh, for flash, download the player (http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash) and it should work just fine).
Before Firefox I used Opera, before that Netscape, and before Netscape I used Mosaic, so I haven't been using IE much...
-
i use IE since years, no problems, it works for Forum browsing
and emails, what do i miss?

Swedish and Finnish "Goverments" went out and warned people or rather incourege them not to use IE due to the latest security hole that still havent been patched by MS.
If you can read scandinavian heres the link : http://www.aftonbladet.se/vss/it/story/0,2789,566877,00.html

My opinion is Firefox is the gratest thing since sliced bread.
Has IE beat hands down. It isnt even close
What plugin problems are you having?
I havent had a problem with a single one

Just installed flash last night on another system for a game my daugher wanted to play on NickJr.com
All I had to do was to remember to close all browser windows when I ran the install, reboot then go back to the site and everything worked fine

Tab browser windows blows Ie away... all the other stuff is nice too.

firefox here :)
-
Migration from IE to firefox is easy. For me it required zero adjustment time. I've had a slight problem with plugins, but that's because I think some other program has stolen the .xfi extension; anyway, download to desktop and run off of there (no need to reboot). Plus, IE plugins usually end up being spyware anyway. Flash on IE is a PITA because it's an ActiveX control, and if you automatically allow those, you're stupid.
Tabbed browsing I didn't understand or particularly deem useful. But after a few months, I wouldn't have it any other way.
the executable also loads faster, and pages load faster with firefox.
-
It's easy enough to try out, so you can download it and see if you like it. The most difficult thing that I found was setting up Java, and even that was easy. Just have to locate the installer (that was the hard part, but I was looking in the wrong place), then install it. For all Macromedia (Flash & Shockwave), you can just go to their web sites and download the installers. Two things that make Firefox my choice. First is tabbed browsing, I love it. Second is the third-party plug-ins...there's a bunch of them, and the browser can automatically check for updates to itself AND your plug-ins and install the updates at your request. So far, I'm using plug-ins for mouse gestures (certain actions of the mouse control functions of the browser, and is infinitely configurable), Linkification (makes any text url a hyperlink), and Image Zoom.
I think it's definitely an improvement over IE.

Yeah I know that most others get it to work but I havent for some wierd reason. I even degraded myself to reading FAQ's and following instructions to see if i did something wrong, but no.
My puter is jinxed. Oh... winxp pro with SP2

Firefox
Once you get used to tabbed browsing you can't go back.
I can't imagine using a bbs without tabbed browsing now.
-
What killed FireFox for me (last time I tried) was the lack of inheritance for a copied Window.
In IE you can do CTRL-N and get an exact copy including inheritance of visited pages.
Is that fixed now or is that a functionality included in 'tabbed' browsing (which I never explored) ?
That and that some pages work in IE but not in FireFox (makes no difference if the non-working pages doesn't follow standard, they still don't work).
-
And the swedish article talks about email.
"Sårbarheten öppnar version 6.0 av Explorer för virusormen Bofra som sprids med e-post."
"The vulnerability opens version 6.0 of Explorer for the 'virus-worm' Bofra spread by e-mail."
-
actually, I found the tme spent reloading the same page something of a nuisance. Of course, your style of browsing is your own business.
In IE, I would use Ctrl-N to open a new instance, reload the page, and follow some other thread.
In Firefox, I just click with the mousewheel on a link and it starts loading in another tab. By the time I finish reading hte main page I often hafve several other tabs waiting to be read. So Ctrl-N copying the location ends up being a waste of time when there's a better way.
again YMMV, de gustibus, etc.
-
I use an IE based browser called Maxthon, formerly it was MYIE. It works great has built in security.
Pick the one you like. I doesnt matter to me:)
They all have their problems.
-
Firefox is a great browser, thanks for whom ever listed a link to them on here a couple weeks back. I still have to use IE for my work website but everything else I go through Firefox. :aok

you can have multiple pages open under seperate tabs in one browser. Go to FILE and choose NEW TAB to open a new one.

its easier if you let it open the tabs bar on start then just either rt click/open in new tab or double click in the tabs bar to open a new clean tab.
-
Cool. Thankyou kindly.
-
ah I like it!
-
Also Ctrl+T opens a new, blanco tab and Ctrl+N opens another Firefox browser.
Also double-click in tab-area opens a blanco tab.

I didn't discover the power of tabs for ages.
using BBS as an example.
middle mouse button opens a new tab when you click on any Html code/address.
So when you are looking down the list of threads, you middle click on all the threads you want to read. The thread then open in a new tabs while you continue to read.
It saves all the back and forward business , which saves lots of time.
Applies to any web page (say reading newspapers etc)

I have Opera Firefox and Navigator. I only use IE for MS sites or others that won't work with any other browser. Just too many security holes showing with IE on a regular basis.
Opera is nice in that you can zoom in on images as well as text. Firefox won't do the former.
-
It doesn't? hmph guess mine is broken then... ;)

hmm, Staga, I followed the link to the extensions, but didn't see anything obvious, which extension is that?

You can also set up image zoom with mouse gestures. I have it set up so a right-click + mousewheel up or down to zoom in/out text and images.

thanks much, both extensions installed and working well
