Check your window.

We used to do this when we were kids, every mate took their TV remote from home and went out on the streets with em.

Sneeked up to the windows, turned off the pplīs TV sets, changed channels, raised the volume etc ;)

It could be a high voltage transformer overheating.

A company recently released a remote to do exactly that, Turn off your neighbor`s TV. They did a story about it on a local news channel here describing the havoc it was causing.
Evidently it does a self scan for freq and mode.

Had a dying set a few years ago that would do that sometimes.
Then sometimes when you would turn it back it would start racing through the channels all by itself before it shut itself off again.

Would haveta unplug it sometimes over night then it would work fine again for a few days and it would start all over again.

Was really comical. and annoying

I had the same thing in my set. First it started to switch itself off randomly, and after a year or so it died. I repaired it with instructions I found from the net. The problem was  2 electrolytecondensators which had died and caused the death of a transistor.

If you have even little knowledge of electronics and soldering you might be able to repair it easily. There's plenty of sites with instructions on the net, here's one:

I had an old console TV that did that.  it was like 10 years old so I got a new one and gave it to my brother... had to get it to his house in a pickup and it bounced around some getting there.    that was 7 years ago and it has never done it for him... thing works perfectly.

be warned....

opening up a TV is like a computer moniter. there are capaciters that hold enough charge to kill you instantly if touched even hours / days after being unplugged.

There is a way to discharge it yourself though, we used to do it in our VOC class.

How silly of me... I've always taken you for the sort of guy who thought that being a smug, self-righteous salamander makes people clever :)
