Title: Legal implications of smilies
Post by: Neubob on November 26, 2004, 10:22:17 PM
:) =  Smilie equivalent of a playful punch on the shoulder.
Implied disclaimer: "Anything I said immediately before or after cannot be interpreted as an attack of anykind, personal or other".

:( = Smilie equivalent of a conspiquous lack of a sarcastic laugh after something unquestionable upsetting is said.
Implied disclaimer: "I am not an insensitive jerk, I really feel this way, at least at the moment."

:D = Smilie equivlanet of an even more playful smack on the back, perhaps aided by alcohol consumed.
Implied disclaimer: "We're so tight, and are so understanding of one another, you cannot possibly interpret what I just said as a personal attack."

;) =  Smilie equivlanet of a secretive nod, delivered after something questionable is said.
Implied disclaimer: "WE both know what I mean, and becuase of this, nobody can accuse me of a personal attack."

Continued from previous page:

:p = Smilie equivalent of that warm feeling you get after you think you've delivered a clever line.
Implied disclaimer: "Now it's your turn to say something witty, but don't try to hard, because I didn't."

 = Smilie equivalent of exchanging a glance with a third party during a debate in an attempt to create a bond with said third party based on the supposed absurdity of the statement just forwarded by your opposition.
Implied disclaimer: "WE all know this is retarded, except for this guy" (while gesturing with head to the guy who spoke before the awkward silence).

 = Smilie equivalent of throwing a temper tantrum.
Implied Disclaimer: "oooh, ooooh, if only I were in the same room with [offending party]!"

 = Smilie equivalant of staring, unabashedly, at a nice set of breasts.
Implied Disclaimer: "I'm only human."

:lol = Smilie equivalent of patting yourself on the back for a joke that's probably not that funny.
Implied disclaimer: "I'm sorry, but you had to be there."

:rofl = Smilie equivalent of pointing and laughing, knowing that you're not alone.
Implied disclaimer: "Admit it, you're all laughing too, or at least you would be if you got the joke."

:aok = Smilie equivalent of being at a total loss for a coherent response.
Implied disclaimer: "I'd say something if I hadn't flushed what was left of my higher cognative functions down the toilet along with the rest of the loaf I pinched this morning."

I wish we could petition skuzzy to get rid of 'Mr. Thumbs up'

It would take the wind out of the sails of so many annoying posts.

WHAT?!? The Thumbs Up smilie is the best one! It means "Yeah buddy, we rock" and if it's returned it means "yeah buddy, you're a dipstick."

We need more smilies and a certificate to use them so everyone knows what they mean. Unless you have passed the written test you are not allowed to use them.

And the man holding the erect noodle --> :aok  stays.

I think that moreso than anything else, it begs the question of where that thumb was a minute earlier.

Arlo loves to ridicule the unwashed masses, but for some smilies is all they have- it is a universal language even the illeterate can understand.

I say up with smilies. :aok

Is that what it's being called these days?

Dammit, not even out of my 20s and already behind the times.
