Title: Frightening morning
Post by: Neubob on November 30, 2004, 10:02:50 AM
My girlfriend fainted yesterday morning--the second time this has happened in the last year. The episode lasted for a few seconds. If I had been there at the time, I would have called an ambulance, but as luck would have it, I'd already left. Her friend was the one that witnessed the event.

Both times this took place in the morning, after about 5 hours of sleep, during her monthly cycle, after having not eaten a thing that morning or the previous evening.

She is a healthy, athletic 20 year old. Her main problems are that she drinks too much coffee(without sugar), eats too little and doesn't sleep enough. She is also as hard headed as they come, and refuses to go see a doctor.

I don't know if any of you have had this experience before but if so, is this a product of low blood sugar, or something more profound? The doctor that I spoke with said it was likely the case, but nothing can be known for sure without an EKG.

Medical advice from a WW2 Flight Sim BBS = Bad idea.

Take her to a Doctor = Good Idea.

Trick her if you have to. Call an ambulance if it happens again.

You should get her all hopped up on sugar, give her holistic medicines, and feed her MickeyD's everyday.

Best way to live, evar!

I'm pretty much picking at any straw I can get at this point. If I'd been there when it had happened, she would have been strapped to a gurney before she'd regained her balance. Tricking her will be both difficult and interesting, and after spending most of yesterday and last night thinking of ways to do this, I came with the following tactics:

1.)   Pushing her down next time we go skiing, hopefully causing a strain/sprain rather than break.

2.)   Giving her some bad seafood.

I feel like a bastard for even thinking this but I'm pretty much desperate.

Without being overly personal; some women can have an adverse reaction to some kinds of tampons; especialy if they're left in overnight.

It's called toxic shock syndrome; and can be serious.

And I'd suggest that if she's fainting; then it's serious; whatever it is.

This shouldn't be ignored; it could happen behind the wheel......

check blood sugar.  at least get the possibility of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) off the books.  Even healthy athletic young people can develope insuline resistance (especially if others in family have it).

other than that...could be anything but fainting is not healthy.

BTW fainting during period would have the doctor looking at anemia.

My wife had some similar problems.

It was a problem with being insulin resistant.  They prescribed Metformin, I think that’s how to spell it, any way it helped out.

The only apparent side affects are 1) it makes the menstruation period extremely predictable.  2) helps the resistance to insulin.

And the biggest side affect that may get her to the doctor, it helps with weight loss due to its affects with insulin levels.

I don’t think that’s a good idea. Although she needs to see a doctor, it’s unlikely this is an immediately life-threatening problem. She’s an adult and capable of making her own medical decisions and actually forcing a women to do this (or anything else) rarely works.

Start by trying to understand her before you try to change her mind. Try to find out why she refuses to see a doctor. Despite what she may say initially, it’s usually fear – either she is scared of doctors or she is afraid to learn there may be something seriously wrong. Has she had a bad experience with a doctor in the past? It’s important to validate her concerns, don’t just dismiss them even if you disagree with her logic.

Then try to negotiate. Ask if there is anything you can do to get her to go to a doctor. For example, it might help to offer to go with her if she seems afraid. If you have any friends or family that’s a doctor, nurse, etc. maybe have them talk with her. She might be more likely to listen to them. If she’s afraid there is something seriously wrong, google “vasovagal syncope” and print out some info for her. This is one of the most common causes of fainting in young adults and the long-term prognosis is excellent.

Def. can be low blood sugar..

Could even be High Blood Sugar..

If it happens again, and your home, call an Ambulance for sure!

And if you really love her, ask her to eat some food, drink less coffe, and sleep more, or you'll have to take her to a doctor..

Good luck man, hope all goes well!

Yeah, it's weird how chicks are so deathly afraid of tiny little things like that.  Though, the fear is usually manifested at the sight of spiders and other small insects, rather than a teeny weenie. :p

I used to faint sometimes when getting up from sofa too quickly. That was most likely caused by too low blood pressure. Since then I've adjusted my eating and drinking habits and a low BP is no longer a problem.:)

She is insured. And her mother knows about this episode. The problem is that her folks live far away and pretty much just spoil the living hell out of her every chance they get. They've been doing this all her life. The result is that she's a bit of an immature little brat when it comes to things like this. Completely obstinate, which is strange, because she's very smart in all issues NOT pertaining directly to her.

The fact is, I love the spoiled little brat to death and when I see her next, will attempt to... reason with her. I tried it last night but more or less got the folded-arms, pursed-lips response, followed by a forced change of subject.

I'll go back in again later today, I don't care if I end up in the doghouse for a year. Worst case scenario, I'll try explaining to her that she could, at the very least, if not for herself, then for me, go and see a specialist. It's underhanded, and downright womanly, but what else have I got?

Thanks for at talking to me guys, and for the words of wisdom.

yeah take her to a doctor right away.

I only met one girl in my life who would faint a lot. She had low blood pressure and would faint easily if she got excited or scared or agitated...or even if she became very physically active (dont ask).

she would pass out for like 10 seconds then get up and be like 'oh i passed out again?'

course.... if she simply has a bad aorta valve due to an undetected birth defect then she will simply drop dead while walking in the park or to starbucks sometime soon....

take her to a doctor.

Exactly. She needs blood work and an ECG. Tell her Slash27 is a paramedic and he said she needs to go to the damn doctor.

Does she have a sister by any chance?:D

Seriously Neubob get her to a doctor.  The only time I saw anyone pass out was when my dad passed away.

He was in his chair having chest pains after raking leaves, then all of a sudden his eyes rolled back in his head and he started gurgling, then a couple seconds later he opend his eyes and exclaimed "I passed out!".  Thank god he had no idea that he was having a massive heart attack.

Unfortunatly just after saying he passed out, he went back into convulsions and I started CPR until the EMTs got there.  It turns out the autopsy found that he had a silent heart attack 10 days prior and it was only a matter of time before his heart finally quit.

So don't take it lightly, it may be nothing but it's better to know now then be sorry later.  Some people get a warning, my dad did not.  This might be hers.

Again, thanks guys... You've confirmed and reconfirmed that which I was already convinced of. Just gotta figure out how to do it now.

Sorry, Slash, she's an only child.

Here's a photo though, from a recent trip. She's the one with blue eyes. She looks harmless enough in the picture but, well... let's just say that looks can be decieving :)

if this happened when she stood up after lying down for a good while, she might look into low blood pressure as a cause as well.  I'd definitely threaten to call her Mom on this, tho Mom might be a long way away.

Well, she's on her way to the doctor... Didn't take much convincing last night either. I think the day this happened she was just completely out of sorts, not to mention, it being that time of the month for her doesn't help at all.

Thanks for the sentiment Eagler, but I think I'll keep her. A funny looking idiot like me is lucky to have her around to begin with. Stubborn and at times illogical, yes, but I just couldn't imagine life without her right now.

As for the friend, Slash. That's Sasha. She's nice enough but I don't know that much about her. She doesn't live around here.

pretty much the advice I gave my son-

they're all crazy.  the trick is to find one who's particular brand of crazy isn't too offensive or maybe even amazing too you.  she also must have enough positive attributes to outweigh the lunacy.

btw-  Neubob,  next time you have trouble convincing her to go to the DR.  simply tell her she's going and put her in the car.  it's a lot easier for her to get over being mad than for her to get over being dead.

Yeah, I've come to that conclusion... I've also identified which brand of crazy I tend to go for.... During my last physical, after the 'talk' portion of the visit, my internist offered me a referal to a therapist.

My niece is about the same age and has fainted 4 times in the last 3 years. Being good socialists she recieved all sorts of tests finishing up at a consultant neurologist and wearing some electronic monitoring gear for a couple of days.

After all that it turns out she is just prone to fainting, bit more to it I'm sure but thats the gist of it.

Fainting goats originated just up the road in Marshall County, Tennessee. Technically they don't really faint. Rahter they suffer attacks of myoclonus (uncontrolled muscle contractions) induced by excitement or stress.
