Couple of my favourites.

Thierry Henry (http://www.soccerclips.net/clips/062.zip)

Bergkamp Wonder goal vs. Newcastle Utd (http://www.tiscali.be/cmsimages/video/bergkamp.mpeg)

pah...

How many times does a foot actually come in contact with the ball during an American football game?  A few, I suppose...kick off, punts, field goals...but that is about it.

Why did you guys steal the name football?  Why not just call it Handball?

handball is that sissy game played on playgrounds with a baby racketball, and little sissy gloves.

Its plenty origanal in my opinion. Its a almost completly different game besides a few simularities. Its just a differnece of opinions. Two different games with the same name. Oh well...
I enjoy both sports and could really care less what they are called, with a few esceptions like "purple fuzzy game".
IMO its not the name that matters but the content.

so.... a game that is worshipped like a religion in every country other than in north america for hundreds of years, played by hundreds of millions - called football...

should change name because Americans call a game - which is just entertainment in between saggy tit shows and commercials in which they throw a ball around.... football.

Come hang out with me when you get to the US. Then you can see how small we football guys are.  Yes I know you are joking about the body size.

In fact I would like to get you to come on over for a while next year and see a few games up close and personal. Hell we could even catch a few major games if you timed it right for a couple of weeks. And while here in the heart of college football land...Alabama...well at least to all of us who live here its the heart...the beer and at least one game is my treat along with the BBQ ribs and pregame meals.

You know what I find funny though....normally (and I haven't seen it in this thread YET) the real football is called a sissy game, whereas American Football is a manly game.

Why did such a manly game adopt a sissy game's name?

I would LOVE to watch a real american football game, in the crowd or american bar to experience how it should be watched.

I have tried to watch the superbowl here and its probably the worst 'sport' i have ever seen in my life.

To be there and experience it is how you should judge a sport.

im guessing college american football is the best to watch as they are trying to make a name for themselves and do not have all the commercial influence like the POS superbowl has.

he scored a better goal than the one i posted, he volleyed it from an unbelievable angle into the top corner, in i think the 1988? european championships.  The video clip will probably be in there somewhere, although i havent seen it in there yet.

He would have been up there with the best players ever, had he not got injured.

Check out Ronaldinho and Zidane if you like watching outrageous skills and stuff.

College football is better.

Actual being at a game is also hundreds of times better then watching it on tv. Just like golf. Nap time on tv, and fun on the greens.

Greed runs the world. And it does run the NFL. The NHL is feeling the effects of that this year. But kudos to the players that can bring in millions of dollars to play a sport they love. Wish I could get paid that to play AH.

The reason its called a "Football is not because the foot comes in contact with it but because its length is 1 foot long.

If we were to be accurate about Soccer it would be called "Kick ball"

Bring it on over Furball. In fact the best football is youth and high school football. I have coached American football from college down to youth and love the youth and high school side. You get to work with kids and teach them much more than you get to do in college. If you could swing it we might be able to get in several different types of games to let you experience many different levels.

that is the real deal.. that and college mentioned elsewhere.

college is total drunken abandon by co-eds, and tons of yelling / partying.

pro football, well most rabid fans have grown up with a team and hold a "personal" connection with it.

here in wisconsin the packers ar "We" or "us" like everyone in the state is on the team.

watching the local game in a super crowded sports bar drinking at noon on a sunday is awsome too.

the fact there are almost NO riots and stuff leads me tobelieve a soccer game might be a bit more "rowdy" in the stands. here at a football game like the packers for example, all the tickets are season ticket holders, with a 60,000+ person waiting list (approx 65 years or more wait for tickets).

there are very few opposing fans at a game. if there are then the local team is not really popular, and the "fans" are just sticking it out.

You are right about one thing. Soccer is worshiped like a religeon.

Fans die in the stands over it and everything.
Riots break out.

Your right it is alot like relegion.

Haveta hand it another one.
Soccer is the only game in existance where the fans are rougher and tougher then the players

OR if you wear a dress.

Or if your mommy wont let you play football (american style)

That is the false attitude which is why it is not popular in america.

The fact that it is a "sissy" sport.

If you have ever actually played it to a decent level, watched a decent game, you will realise it is not.

Funny how you can call it a "sissy" sport when it is a contact sport, and 2 of the most popular sports in america are non contact sports.

Admitedly I''ve only played it in grade school. As part of the curriculum.

But I've seen it.

Nephews was a star at it in HS ( yes because his mom wouldnt let him play football)

Saw him play several times.
Seen it played on TV several times.

I have neither experianced nor have I seen anything in that game at any level that would lead me to beleive it was anything less, then a sissy sport.
Bout the only other "sports" I can think of that is more sissy is Badminton and Golf. And unfortunately I dont view Golf as being a real sport but rather an activity or that would win top honors.

I sit a couple of desks away from a guy who supports a team called Sheffield United, which is a rival team to Sheffield Wednesday. He hasn't said the word Wednesday for 20+ years.

I played football with him a couple of times against another plant. What he did on the pitch would probably land him in jail if he did it off the pitch. He kicked one poor lad into a heap that was carried off the pitch and on into casualty.

I gather he was (is?) an old school 'sissy' - back in the days when lads were a bit naughty with their fists on match days. Not sure I'd like to get on the wrong side of him, and he plays every Sunday in amateur football.

Nice chap otherwise.

i could never get the knee bounce thing down really well, but i could fake out many, and kick with both feet almomst as accurate as each other.

then i joined football and became a punter / D back.

the fact that you cant even explain properly what you could do makes me very sceptical you could play football (soccer), and the fact that you are so desperate woman wise makes it hard for me to believe that you played for any type of sports team at all.

to satisfy you d***headness:

i played soccer for the first time in my life gym 1988 freshman year, and was "told" i was good.....

in football i had a 1 1/2 step kick with a 4.1 second average hang time, but only a 22 yard average. with a 2 1/2 step kick (very rare in HS / college because it take more time) i had a 3.8 second hang time average and a 36 yard average.

i kicked lob style with almost no spin on the ball, hence the short distance. the redeeming quality was there was never a return on any of my punts. all were fair catches because of the cover team being right there.

our team (the JV team not the varsity team) was so terrible that 2/3 the time we faked our punts n a attempt to make up the 30 points we were behind. our record was 2-10 for the season.

the start of my junior year in high school i was in the hospital with juvenile rumatory arthritis (later to be diagnosed specifically as still's disease.

i missed 3/4 of my junoir year, and was not active in athletics again in my teenage or adult life.

during my rehab in limited time at school i learned to play chess. i had 4 study halls each my last 1/2 of junoir year and all of my senior year. during that time i did play alot of chess even with the principal, and superintendant of the school.

all this doent disguise the fact soccer is for studmuffingots

the fact i was raised by a single mother through grammer school, and not introduced to organized sports until high school probably is what show my lack of "terminology" for some things, but during those early years i learned respect for the fellow man, and how to be sincere and honest in life. i learned how to be a gentelman, and had to learn on my own when NOT to be. saying **** about me and my upbringing is a time NOT to be.

who really cares!!! its like this.. football(aka soccer) are guys who run up and down an extremely large field for a really long time trying to out play the defense and score the ball into the net... the everyday joe cant do this for as long as these players do.... so IMO you cant call it a sissy sport.. football (American) you have men who some weigh as much as a small car trying to kill the guy with the ball... same concept as stated above as trying to out play the defense to get the ball into the endzone.  wearing all the pads and running play after play isnt an easy feat.... so IMO you cant call it a sissy sport. so all the east vs. west or the north vs. south guys.... find a happy medium already.. geeze.:aok

American football, known in the United States simply as football, is a competitive team sport that rewards players' speed, agility, skill, tactics, and brute strength as they run and throw a ball, and block, tackle, and outrun each other, trying to force the ball further into their opponent's territory and ultimately into the endzone.

It is one of the more physically demanding sports, with a great deal of physical contact occurring on every play as players often weighing 300 pounds (~135 kg) or more shove each other with all of their strength, and with a clearly defined front line, moving up and down the field, separating the offensive and defensive squads.

American football does not much resemble soccer, the sport which most people outside the U.S. call "football". Consequently, American Football is best known internationally as "American Football". However, both of these games have their origins in varieties of football played in the United Kingdom in the mid-19th century, and American football is directly descended from rugby football, usually known simply as "Rugby". According to an apocryphal story rugby football began with a football game at Rugby School in England in 1823 when a player named William Webb Ellis suddenly ran with the ball only to be tackled by an opponent. Contrary to popular belief rugby football had always permitted handling the ball but had banned running with the ball. Rule breaking gradually became increasingly common until it became the accepted norm. Thus was born the game of Rugby Football.

The game progressed from that point and was introduced to North America from Canada, by the British Army garrison in Montreal, which played a series of games with McGill University. In 1874, McGill arranged to play a few games in the United States, at Harvard, which liked the new game so much that it became a feature of the Ivy League. Both Canadian and American football evolved from this point. The U.S. game still has some things in common with the two varieties of rugby, especially rugby league

What I cant understand about football is how anyone can enjoy it with all those breaks for adds and stuff. That actually goes for all programs shown on american TV. Nothing but commercial breaks all the time.

How long is a game really if you didnt have all those commercial breaks?

Thats not much at all. I think a soccer match is over in 90 but there is a 15 or 20 min break after 45.

If I had to choose between american football and soccer I would take the american variant (- all the breaks).

They never delay the game for the TV ads. American Professional Football is played in quarters of 15 minutes each with a 15 minute halftime break. The clock only ticks off actual in play time. A game typically lasts about 3 hours.

The average time of each play in American football is probably between 3-8 seconds once the ball is put in play. However if you haven't played it that may seem like a short amount of time. There are times in my past college football career when 5-7 seconds seemed like a lifetime while I was blocking a guy waiting on my quarterback to decide who to throw the ball to on a pass play.

Not only that but its terribly complicated once you look at it from a players perspective. In soccer (football everywhere else) the object is fairly simple although athletically it can be challenging as I can only imagine. However in football with the way the game has changed in the last 20-25 years it has become increasingly more difficult because of the way offensive and defensive alignments have started being used.

For example when I played football as an offensive lineman we had to be able to "read" (based on watching film and practicing against possible setups) what the defense was preparing to do for each situation. In having that knowledge of the situation and what the defense could do we adjusted our blocking schemes on the field to hopefully contain what the defense was trying to do.

Its hard to put that into words instead of being able to explain it using diagrams and all the other visual aids. From what I can gather there are several American football clubs that have started in Germany and England that have begun building interest over there and have come here to recruit coaches to spend time over there in Europe to teach these guys how to play football. I keep hoping that one day my phone will ring with an offer like that. It would be an experience of a lifetime I think to teach to a true virgin audience and to watch them prepare and play for the first time.

So there is 5 x 15 mins followed by 30 min break and then another 5 x 15?

That is 180 mins total.

If you take the time frame I used of 3-8 seconds and average that you get 5.5 seconds. On average in college there are roughly 65-75 snaps (plays) run by one teams offense or maybe by both teams offense. Just using the 65 plays as the time you probably only average 357.5 seconds of game time which is 5.96 minutes of game time plays on an average game day.

As mentioned earlier the real part that makes it so physical is the sheer size and strength levels of the people involved. Hope that helps show a few people about American football.

No Nilsen there are 4 15 minute quarters. The first two are played in sequence and are separated from the last two by a 15 minute halftime for college (same for high school) and I think a 12 minute halftime for professional. The actual play time is what happens in the 15 minute quarters.

So the 15 mins are not real clock 15 mins?

There is some guy that uses a stopwatch and only counts the seconds of real play and then adds it up until there is a full quarter?

Found this on Amazon.com. It also has another book by called the Complete Idiots Guide to football there with it. Never used one of these so I have no idea what they are like except maybe very simple in their wording and hopefully not to complicated like this discussion could turn out to be. ;)

Football for Dummies 2nd Edition by Howie Long (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0764539361/qid=1102007681/sr=8-1/ref=pd_ka_1/002-9332215-7553623?v=glance&s=books&n=507846)

Sorry I didn't explain that very well. Yes its 15 minutes on a real clock. However in college the clock stops for first downs and between plays. When a player is tackled on a play the clock stops but then is restarted when the ball is set back into play by the referees. There is also a 25 second play clock that means the play has to be run within those 25 seconds and that includes getting the play from the coaches on the sidelines and getting the instructions on the play to the players on the field then getting lined up in the right formations to run the play.

Ok, i get it... You can't watch the clock on the wall to see if the game is over... its over when there has been 15 x 4 mins of actual movement/gameplaytime + the break however long that may take.

And the average time it takes is about 3 hours but it can be alot more or less?

It can be more but rarely less. All depends on how close the game is and if they play a sudden death quarter in the event of a tie. Close games tend to drag a game out longer.

Man, I love people bashing sports they haven't played enough to understand :) I'm American, but I've played soccer since I was 4. There's a helluva lot more going on than people realise. Yes, it is a contact sport, if it wasn't, my wonderful English trainers wouldn't have taught me the proper way to try to break the tailbone of a defender, so he'd take a swing at me, and get ejected when I screamed for the referee. Let's not forget the friendly elbows in the ribs, punches to the kidneys, heavily scarred shins & calves, and repeated attempts to break ankles. Pads? You get 2. One for each shin, and cleats with no ankle support because it'll slow you down. Even the fans go hard. There are "Football Hooligans" for a reason... I wanna party with those guys.

American football is just as much fun. Hard hits, trick plays, mentally disturbed linebackers, and backs with lateral moves that make your jaws drop. My only beef is that everybody should be required to do a hurry-up offense, every play. For as much as they get paid, you should get your money's worth out of them. More time in the huddle than actually playing is silly. Their fans riot too, but only sometimes, and really only during the superbowl.

Both sports are great, and you guys that knock them either don't understand, haven't played, or were never good at it :)

I think the reason that countries that have football(soccer)as a national sport like it so much is that the fans get to riot and beat the crap out of each other after a game. Of course, we get that in the U.S. now with the NBA and college football(not soccer).

:aok :aok
