What in your opinion is the greatest car of all time?
In my opinion it has to be the E-Type Jaguar, it sybolised an era, awesome performance and a timeless design.

If it is just by looks, i love the Aston Martin's. Such a beautiful, exclusive cars. yet they manage to keep with the companies history.

Granted, it's not street legal... but that's whatever. Can't argue with 19k redlines, 7 speed trannies, 240mph, and the ability to pull g's in the corner like nothing we'll ever experience outside of performance aircraft. Hands down winner of raw performance, but it's not a fair comparison to anything else :)
My second favorite racecar. Audi R8. They can do 4g in the corners, and run 3 enduros with nothing but oil changes in between. I saw one in person at the SEMA convention in November... too bad I couldn't figure out a way to steal it.
Now, my favorite road car? I'll admit there's alot of reasons to disagree, but hey... I like italian designs, and it's just an opinion... Buggati EB110.
Quad-turbo V12, 650hp, 217mph, and it handles far more gently than you'd imagine. Better handling and much less body roll than a McClaren. Relatively tame interior. Overly complex, sure, but the entire package to me is just amazing.

The Austin Mini.
It firmly put the car into the hands and aspirations of the ordinary working man; and was the death knell to the motorcycle - sidecar combination which preceeded it.
Classless; it could be driven by all from prince to pauper; and became an icon of style in it's own right.

I think this picture captures the effortless style of the Trebant, its a real babe magnet too.

Screw the Cobras, Jagas and Astins: you need the Austin Allegro!

The stroller would fit but the steering wheel is on the wrong side.

Model T Ford , hands down.
friend pulled one outta the woods a couple years ago. been in there at least 50 years, fairly rusted. he taped up the wiring, new hose for fuel line, new gas, new tires. cranked it right up. didn't change oil or anything else. ran like a top. and down the road we went.
now try to beat that!

OK, I would go with the model T, but this comes in second

Hemi-Cuda = Hemi Powered
-
Looks like that one is T/A 340 Six-Pak
-
oh and Hemi hasn't powered a single car ever.
Oh and before any freak starts to shout how great invention Hemi was they should know it was French car which used them first, Peugeot Grand Prix cars in twenties.
Next bigger Hemi manufacturer was btw BMW in thirties with their 328.
Damn I hated when Saab sold cars with "Jet engine" in eighties (fuel injection)
rant over, thanks for your time...

This is such a no-brainer.
No other auto can even come close to the 911 in any category when discussing the "best car ever."
Th eonly car I see coming close to beating it is the VW Bug.

Tsk tsk, Furball. Nice picture of the green Aston, but the steering wheel is on the wrong side.
As for the E-types, the one shown is I believe the namby-pamby V12 version for the gin sipping dandies. It had a top speed of 140mph. The real McCoy was the 1961 3.8 whose top speed was 150mph, thanks to the absence of all that American mandated anti-pollution crap. A later concession to the American market was the removal of the perspex headlight covers, which made the car more streamlined.
I would like one of these. (Merc SLK 320)

I'd have to say the a car maker which has done a 180 on their products.. I'd have to say the new CTS-V :D I will be adding this car to my stable soon!

depends on what you want a car for. The etype jag was a real joke when it was new... if it started it most likely would have some type of electrical problem or burn oil or not be in tune.... it was expensive to maintain and wouldn't beat a vette.
now of course.... people are all wet and gushy about em but back then used ones were a drug on the market.
porches were slow and evil handling for most people... The cobra was ahandful not many could or can get a lot out of them... even my chevy powered Healey is impossible for most to drive to the limit... it is about the same thing as a 427 cobra for weight/hp maybe a little more powerful but close. I sure don't want it as my only car.
I have a late sixties muscle car... a morpidite british sports car with no frills whatsoever with a chey V8 in it and a Lincoln Town car...
I drive em all and they all have their good points.

The best car ever made is your first one bought with your own cash:)

Let me be the first to wake up some of you "911" fans.
The best car ever is:
The Porsche 959

But you're right about its performance. Even today it gives most "supercars" a run for their money, and even outperform many of them. IIRC the Cobra's short braking distance is particularly impressive.
The 427 was built from 65 to 67 on another note.
GScholz, if I'm not mistaken, back then 1000 units (maybe 500) was needed to qualify a "production car" from a Race car derivitive. I cannot find the source, and then again I may be wrong. I feel about 80% sure though.

I've driven a train (and was allowed to take photos of it :p ) but I have never driven a London Routemaster bus. I would love to have a go in this.
Coolest thing about it is the pre-select epicyclic gearbox. The gear selector is just a short column mounted switch lever. You flick it into the gear you want, then hit the left pedal (which is not a clutch) to engage that gear. There is a fluid coupling like an automatic gearbox. If starting in 2nd gear (normal for buses) while accelerating away, you could flick into 3rd, but the change is not made until the driver hits the left pedal. Way cool!

For me the greatest car of all time was when 6 of my High School fraternity brothers took a road trip to SC for our convention. A Buick Electra with a highway cruising speed of 120 all the way from Mobile to Myrtle Beach, SC. Think we got there in 5 or 6 hours.:D

You live in Mobile? Do you have a "mobile phone"?
harrr harrr... sigh.

Bet that time does not include the 5-6 stops for gas. :lol
-
The actual time was nine and a half hours, but we made up for it between gas stops.:)
That Buick did sustain 100 cruising speeds without effort. With six people in it. It was a good car.

Public HS did. Not allowed in most private schools because of the trouble involved. In public school, it was a way of survival.
Before that, I attended an authoritarian parochial school. They didn't tolerate even dancing. Though if I had stayed there, I would probably be better off in the long run.
I enjoyed 11th and 12th grade at public HS. The reason I went there was to be in a fraternity I was tired of being a wimp and not informed of the ways of the world. I learned much from both schools, and don't regret a single thing I did there. I was very happy at that time in my life.

The new one can't be a GT-40 (or a fake one!). It's too tall... 43" high. They're really nice, but for about $150,000 less, you can get a Viper which has only a fraction less performance. With the extra cash you can get a Hennesy Venom. I live near the airport they used to build them at... absolutely amazing. Saw one neck & neck @ 180mph vs a sportbike, and then it got on the gas & left the bike standing still. A few similar videos are floating around the net if you look for 'em.
