Wow, this could be the sleeper hit of the year! (well, for modern military aircraft fans)
Coming to IMAX film theaters near you in December - Fighter Pilot: Operation Red Flag. The film features lots of action from Nellis AFB's Red Flag ops where air forces around the world train and fight in the most intense war similation anywhere. There's clips and trailers, pix, and even an arcade sim at their site.

The film opens Dec 4th at the US Air Force Museum at Wright Patt and comes to other IMAX venues on December 11th.

Too bad they closed the IMAX theatre here in Columbus about 4 years ago.
-
Just watched a few of the trailers - I have to say its some of the best air-to-air film footage I've seen.
Here is a site with a list of theaters that will be showing this film:

If you have ANY interest in aircraft at all, you must see this film. Steal the $12 bucks if you have to. You won't ever see this kind of footage anywhere else. I've flown over those same ranges with these guys and the footage shot for this film is outstanding.
It's possibly too good... I have no doubt some oldtimers in congress are going to wet their pants when they see the film, and that might mean this is the last time the USAF ever gets to show what we really do when we turn the volume up to 11 in training.
I haven't seen the whole film and don't know how corny they made it, but the footage in IMAX format will be worth the price of admission no matter what else they do with the movie.

Dangit, I want to go see this, but the theater that it SAID it was going to open at on the 10th has no listing for it. When I go to the website, their link for finding theaters with the film is busted (never loads).
Anyone know the story on this? Has the release been delayed?
-
Trailers at the web site bring back memories. I participated in 2 Red Flag exercises and 1 Green Flag. They were a blast and the trailer appears to tell the story well. Highly recommended!

darn it , cant find any info on when it will be playing in boston
-
how does imax copare to other formats like THX and Sony?
-
Sony is a manufacturer, doesn't apply.
THX is just a standard for audio/visual quality, apples and oranges compared to IMAX.
Of the three you listed, only IMAX is actually a format. It's physically different equipment, 70mm 4:3 if I remember correctly, with high frame rate.
An IMAX theater usually has a screen that fills most of your field of vision. Instead of a rectangle at the front of the theater, imagine a screen that wraps almost around your whole vision, now put a super clear picture on it and film someone flying through the Grand Canyon, and it's like you're really there.
Some theaters will occasionally screen a normal movie on an IMAX screen, but it's usually disappointing because of the grain. For an experience worth having, watch an actual IMAX presentation (usually documentaries) on a subject you like and you will be blown away.

This was an awesome movie. In my opinion, well worth the three hour drive one way to Dallas to see it. I took my three boys (ages 9, 6, 4). They absolutely loved it (and so did I).
This was the first showing in Dallas at 7pm. Hardly, anyone there. Good for us on the seating but bad for the local USAF reps (including an F-16 pilot) who were there to disscuss the film and recruit.
Go see this feature, you will not be dissappointed.:aok
