i was about to log on to the main arena today.
things got a bit slow lately and i find myself playing less and less in the MA, i dont know what it is but im not enjoying it as i used too, mybe its became too much of a routine who knows.
so any way i am about to log in too the main arena when i noticed there are several people in the training arena.
i thought why not hop in for a bit, see if i can help out anyone.
2 hours later here i am typing this massege.
can you belive it? 2 hours of answering dumb questions, flying straight and level, being a target practice to guys who cant hit me from 200 yards when im straight and level, winning dogfights in less then 30seconds, then explaining what i did for as long as 30 minutes, doing lame BnZ passes trying to get the other guy to actually evade me.
and yet i had fun. i felt a i have accomplished something. i helped a newbie, and it felt good. i didnt kill anyone or landed a whooping 20 kills, and still i felt good.
so here is my advice to all you guys who feel they have no challenge in AH anymore.
go to the TA pick anewbie, and help him out- belive me its a challenge, and if i did it with my half english i can do it too and probably batter.
Give it a shot.

Congragts, and thanks
-
I'll second that!
It is indeed appreciated sir.

I never really hung out in the TA however I often took "Veteran" sticks to the DA and spent hours teaching them ACM.
It was some of the best fun I ever had in AH, and I met and made great friends there.
I recommend it to anyone.

I was one of those newbies that Flyboy helped and I really appreciate it. Like he said, us new guys are always looking to learn from you vets. It might be frustrating at times; what's simple for you, is challanging for us but your creating good fights for the future. It's not just ACM you teach but attitude. I've heard a lot about how the MA is full of people who only know how to HO. When you go to the TA with a bunch a newbies you can tell them, and show them through your actions that there are other ways to fight than just jousting. And another quick note, the TA isn't just for newbies, anyone can go in there and brush up on their skills. Not everyone in there is a newbie and I bet you'll find some pretty good action. So if there's ever a time you vets are bored with the same ol, we'd love to have you in the TA to learn from. Ok, I've said enough for a new guy:D , just wanted to thank Flyboy for his time along with Ghosth, Fuzeman and Inyo among others.
guys and thx for all the help you've given.

To continue with the Furball Arena rant....
You want to improve your dogfighting skills? Want to learn air combat SA? Want to get better with aerial gunnery at many angles and orientations?
You *have* to dogfight (furball). No other way to do that other than... to do it!! You can take years to find isolated fights in the MA, only to have it ruined by .... (fill in the blank). Or you can find some H2H arenas, but... otherwise you must be very committed.
No one even knows there is an "indended" dogfighting arena in the DA!! It's close. Almost there... but not quite. IMO, the 'fog of war' needs to be removed and dar allowed. For the MA, those are fine, but if you want to practice ACM and gunnery they are just annoying.
Ok, that said, what the "intended" dogfighting arena really needs is advertising!! No one knows it is there or uses it!! Also, this would be a great 'warm up' area before entering the MA!
If all some want to do is HO and joust, then fine... let them. But I bet that gets old after a while. Having an area where a furball or dogfighting can usually be found would be good.
I know I am not alone in thinking this would work or be a good idea!! But, getting others to come 'out of the woodwork' seems to be quite challenging! Having options to the HO can't be all bad!
Ok, I am done for now....
Regards,
Malta

I've discovered the same thing about the DA/TA and couldn't agree more with you.
It was quite an experience to fly straight and level and let someone get their first "kill".
You know, to everyone who complains about how (timid/weak/lack of ACM/newbie/killstealing, etc, etc) people are...go to the DA/TA and help someone. For some of the peeps with THOUSANDS of posts...I'd say you have more than enough time on your hands.

All Right FlyBoy!!!
I myself tend to try and get in the TA every day for an hour ish. I have asked several "vets" to help me and to also start loggin' TA time. (urchin, XtrmeJ, etc) and I can't help but feel that if WE go in and TRAIN the next generation, the MA will be a much happier experience for all.
Keep it up!! And yes, to all the naysayers, it's a BLAST in the TA. Sure you gota answer alota ?'s, but it's FUN helping these guys out.
Don't like face shooting jousters??? Log some time in the TA and SHOW 'em how to fly.

Yeah, it is fun enough. I be-bop in there every once in a while myself.
Everyone should do a little community service now and then.
Always make sure you show them
a: How to set views &
b: how to set (and what is) convergence
Those are a couple of the not so obvious things.
(This is KJ714 btw, Duchess has hijacked my computer)

Mentoring new players and seeing them evolve and get better can be very rewarding.
Though I miss you in MA Flyboy...

I can only second that. TA/DA is important.
Im not a very good/experienced pilot - yet. But i kinda grew up in a Squad that from the very beginning taught me ACMs, tactics and lots of tips and tricks. Or just furballing in DA. Hey it took them more than 60 secs to kill me today... i must be getting better! Thanks and to the 71st.
If im not in the mood, or get frustrated with MA or just dont want to ruin my stats today i spend time in DA or TA. Most times i find someone that can further my skills. It also happens that im the one answering questions. Or find someone to play a game of 'follow the leader'.
Go there, try flying through hangars inverted. Practice your carrier takeoffs and landings. Too easy?? Take a Lanc abd keep the carrier turning ;)
I guess what i want to say is: TA/DA is the place to improve your skills without the hassles of MA; no matter how good you are (or think you are) - you can always get better...
-
I had a blast as a trainer, probably some of the best times I've ever had in many ways. I think many of the trainers become so engrossed you lose sight of the MA....glad to see you spend some time there:aok

thanks for the kind words guys.
i just wanted to give the community a heads up on whats going in the TA, and how rewarding it can be. :)

I also would like to thank the experienced sticks who have taken the time to help me in the TA. Yes, I do belive that was me FlyBoy was doing his lame B&Z's on. Thanks again Flyboy, Fuzeman, Inyo, 1HungLo and many others for your time helping this nube.:aok If it was not for all of your help, I'm sure I would have given up on this game.

We welcome all who volunteer to help out in the TA, and we appreciate it tremendously
here is an example I ran into last week, I was up flying around with the peoples and this fellow Inyo wanted to try a round or 2 with me, He was pertty good in that La7, hats off to Bighorn ( I think he is the one teaching Inyo or helped teach ) for showing him how to use the La7 properly.
anyhow he typed out BS, that shouldn't happen , La7 should whip an F4U-1 hands down. After about 2 or 3 more trys he figured out what he was doing wrong and how to counter my moves.......and even bettered his ability to control E- throttle management, and flying out of plane
Our biggest problem is when we ask new flyers or not so new flyers if we can help them or answer any questions , they hesitate coming forward to ask. not all do this but most in my experience.
thanks to all who give a helping hand! :aok

you are exactly right Tex, that is what everyone of us that have been here for shall I say 2 years or longer are, We are Mentors!
it is up to us to be a mentor to all the newer flyers and we can either guide them in a good mannered way and encourage them or we can do the opposite.
It is nothing more than a great feeling of pride when a year or so down the road when some gameid privates you after killing you in a long stretched out dogfight, and says thank you for teaching me about the game or about ACM, etc........you know you did your "job" well and it paid off for someone.
It is not a job, it is a will, I just could not find the appropriate word to use!

Dont ever hesitate to ask. The worst that can happen is: you get shot... But youll learn from that. A lot.

I have been goin in the TA since AH-1.
some of the best fun i have had in this game yet.
A person must be able to have patience and translate
ACM and other aspects of this GAME to someone who has no clue.
I,ve taught countless people to land,Immelman,Split S,High Speed Yo-Yo,and the Low speed Yo-Yo.
I have have even showed a couple of new pilots how to use trim control when dogfighting.
I would rather fly against well trained pilots then HO shootin dummies.and you are welcome TAcoKing

If the training thing worked better I'd be happy to help out.

what do you mean by "worked better"
are you refering to the cadet list? or getting comped free time/money to your account for helping?
it is not about getting something in return outside of gratification knowing you helped someone learn something, if you are just in it to gain something besides that then I would not bother
just another opinion, not saying this is what you are refering to :)

with whats there its tough to keep track of your cadets and who actually wants help. I turned it off a long time ago because it would just spam me when someone on their 2 week trial logged on instead of letting folks hit a "click here for a trainer" button to request help. I enjoy helping folks out but would like to have a effective system to facilitate this rather than radomly trolling the TA.

It is way better to fly against them .
If someone needs help and asks,i respond.
Other than that i just fly around shooting at them, putting them in situations.
BatfinkV called it LIVE FIRE TRAINING

"I have have even showed a couple of new pilots how to use trim control when dogfighting."
...and a few older pilots as well lol Just goes to show no one knows it all. You can bet I'll be in there in a few day to help wash the H2H stink off of me.

I was in the TA last nite.
For the last 2 days the new people have been askin the Veteran Pilotz to do some "Live Fire Training".
When they see a enemy plane appear, they treat is as "Hostile".
The Gun "Lethality" is set to it's lowest in there,I let them chase me for hours, and still thier bullets do nothing.
Half the time i land my Corsair on the Bish CV,still no effect from gunfire.
I always ask the people present before switching countries for live fire.
Rules are Rules i Know,But this live fire helps them alot better than shooting at someone with a Green Icon.
Every pilot i have worked with in the TA says that they learned twice as much as they were already learning before.
Maybe it's the way i put it down too them ,i don,t know, but
they are learning.
And as for slimm,Just because you were too proud to ask for a trainer,Doesn,t mean everybody else is.
Just my Opinion though.:aok
-
Just imagine how many can benefit from a formal training program similiar to the ones that AW and WB had.
ack-ack
-
I think alot of pilots are mad because,we are teaching the new people things some don,t learn until a year after they have been playing.
Anymore i log more time in the TA than i do in the MA,I just enjoy teaching people .
Granted i,m no top ten pilot cuz i don,t have enough time to play,
but i do know what is what and how to explain and show it to them.

Heh, I guess humor is wasted on some ppl;) I've been flyin sims for years and, well, I've had plenty of help, both solicited and non-solicited, and have been grateful for all of it.:)

Then you should have said that in the first palce Slimm50.
