a french vessel with minimal anti-aircraft support?
-
Man, I'm not sure, but that picture almost looks fake. I had to take another look at it. For some reason, to me, the water doesn't look right... almost too real. Like the ship was digitally put on top of that water. Maybe its just because the smoke looks so grainy/blurry and that wake at the very bottom looks so incredibly clear. Cool pic though, can't wait to hear the answer =)

Did you know why the flag of the king was white ?
It's because it's traditionaly the colour of the blessed virgin Mary, the lys flower is supposed to be comme from the shape of an Angon (a Francs pike/javellin)* but it's perhaps an urban legen :)
* it's one of the explication ,another is, it's the stylized shape of a frog :D

Yes, the Dutch sailors gave a very good account of themselves, despite their Admiral Doorman making a series of horrific blunders (largely due to very poor communications between ships in the task force).
Ultimately, it was the Perth and Houston that inflicted the greatest damage to the Japanese when they broke into the Japanese anchorage and shot up and sank many troop transports.
My regards,
Widewing

One of the Many areas of WW2 History I am trying to learn more about is the Dutch in the Pacific in WW2, Her subs preformed very well, and she had some very interesting equipment at her disposale. Dull Has some inte5resting thigs to say in his book "The Imperial Japanese Navy (1941-45)"
Specifical During the battle of the Java Sea Doorman (Dutch Admarial In comand), this battle is very interesting and is filled with considerable acts of courage and selfless- nes by all countries, "A TorpedoStruck De-Ruyter aft; erupting into flames, her ammunation exploding, she fell out of line to starbord and soon sank, taking admarial Doorman and 344 of his men with her. She had don all that could be asked of an outnumbered and outguned ship. Four Minutes later a torpedo slamed into the Java. She Burst into flames and soon followed the De Ruyter to the bottom. Only the Huston and Perth were left afloat. Doormans last order to them was to go to Batavia, rather than to stand by to pick up survivors."
Doorman was dogged in his pursuite of the enemy he worked very hard to finialy get at the enemy Transports, and the Japanese had preformed very well in this engagement, which I only touched briefly on, Doorman is cool in my book.
