O.K. I'm going to build a new PC, Windows Base, Xp Pro.
Tell what works best to run AHII. Be serious.:aok
-
you need to go post this in hardware/software...actually all you need to do is look thru lots of similiar requests...
You can run AH2 with almost anything you buy "new"....
AMD 64 (2800-3200) socket 7** or 9** both fine (no big gain with 939)
1 gig memory (best you can afford)
any 6800 series vidio card (again see other forum for options)
Case with good power supply 400W+ (I'd got 450) and cooling.
You can run it well on alot less however...
I have a "Barton core" 2500+ with a Ti4200 VC and rn just fine....

Can one make a suitable computer for $400, that can easily handle Ah2?
-
You could probably buy a processor, motherboard, and graphics card for around $400, but the whole thing? ehhhh
-
What do you mean with easy handle?
As hitech (or was it skuzzy) pointed out in other threads the highest top of the line comp is still not strong enogh to get full resolution/detail.
Under easily handle i would understand to get good framerate with full detail and resolution, and if not eaven top of the line comp can do that 400$ certainly is difficult.

You can easily build the hardware, but adding the operating system would break 400....
Now the real key is the definition of "easily handle"...does that mean decent framerates at default (~25-60) or do you mean maxed out and pegged FPS at max.
For example my AMD 2500+ with a Ti4200 and 1 1gig of DDR2700 runs AH2 very well...easy to build for under $400 if you can find a ti4200 or 4600 around :)

$470 for a "good" barebones system...
This was all off fry's outpost...you can easily shave $100 off this by shopping around...nothing here on "special" except MB combo.
Now everyone has favorite brands and for 400-500 your going to have a system limited somewhere.

9600pro cards are $100 and keep ur eye on the 9800/5900 ones they will probely be really cheap soon ... beware though some prices are climbing though ..
-
VC is toughest part of the "cheap" system...much tougher to know whats a "good" buy then a year or two ago...also balancing the VC and CPU. You can get a 2500+ CPU/MB combo for less than $100...think the 6600 cards are $219 or so now...fitting it all in to ~$400 is the tough part:)
-
Hmm guess i should have been a bit more specific.. I was thinking of 30+ FPS during a furball, and possibly around 50-60 in clear weather. But thanks for an idea of the prices im looking at.
