Title: Early christmas present
Post by: Ripsnort on December 07, 2004, 07:16:07 PM
My old "free" S40 4.0 megapixel Canon died after 3 years of good service. So, my budget was $700 due to the fact that I spent $44,000 on toys in the last year, and I'm about to spend $64,000 in the next 3 months...wife annexed anything over $700, as I eyed the Canon Rebel...

G6 7.1 megapixel works, for an amateur like I that just shoots kids growing up. I still have my manual Pentax 35mm if I want to get serious...

First picture using Macro (with doctored negative contrast)  This is the small lense cap for the camera :

$44,000 in toys last year?   Your kids aren't going to grow up!

Can I come over and play sometime, btw?

You have allready planned exactly how to spend the exact sum of $64,000 to buy "toys" over the definite time of 3 months but you only leave a budet of $700 for a camera..

Jebus, Rip.

Don't you have real friends to brag to.  You know, the ones that you can see in person.  Or have you run all of those off from your constant bragging.

Oh wait.  I know.  Let's play the Drippy game.

You brag about something and then I'll brag about how I did it better.

Well, then you brag about how you did it even better than me and then I'll reciprocate.

Kind of depends on what "toys" is defined by.  If I ever get another Mustang that will definately be a "toy" for me... assuming I ever graduate and get a real job it'll be a damn expensive toy too.

But basically are you all just jealous or Rip because he is winning the "game"... or pissed off at him for rubbing it in your faces?

Just let him enjoy his success, whats the harm in it?

Wow, this looks like a lot of fun. I wanna try too, here goes:

I live in a $1.8 million penthouse condo boasting a 700 sq. foot master bedroom, a marblefloored master bathroom with a jucuzzi and bidet,  and a 900sq. foot patio from where I have a 180 degree view that includes fireworks in DC during the summer and an amazing shot of the Bethesda Mormon temple. It's in one of the nation's wealthiest counties, and there's a concert hall across the street that was completed just last spring, so the value is set to keep rising.

The monthly condo fees are $1500, but I don't pay one red penny because the place belongs to my family, and all I have to do to earn my keep is keep my grades up and make sure that nothing breaks. With 5 bathrooms and a laundry room, there's a lot that can go wrong. If and when I get married, the place becomes mine officially, but in the meantime, when I get bored, I make the 3 hour jaunt to our beachhouse, about 3 hours away, which sports its own elevator and makes the condo look like a shoebox. The property taxes on that place could probably finance a decent house in its own right.

There're 2 other properties as well, one here in the states, and one in Europe.

Next week, I'm gonna go to Best Buy and spend about $300 on a modest digital camera because let's face it, an extra 3 or 4 megapixels is only going to make my lame family outing photos look crisper, not better.

Oh yeah, and I still have all my hair.

Moral of the story:

Lance,

I thought the $44,000 last year was for all of his wife's extra-large size strap-ons and the $64,000 in the next three months was for the surgery to fix Rip's rectum.

You can have your penthouse, (ie apartment) and the city.  I will stick with my 3500 sq ft 3 story log home on 20 acres bordering national forest on 2 sides in the northern rockies.
There how is that???? No ofence intended, my oponion is if you have it, spend it, and the best of luck....

I'm not edging in on his excitement. I'm not making fun of his dollar figures. I'm calling him on the fact that intended or not, the point of this thread was to brag.

Mentioning, casually, that he's dropped 100+k on toys while asking for advice on a camera that relatively few people can afford isn't a call for advice, it's a call for attention, and a primitive one at that.

He wants to show off his excitement? Great! I'd like to hear about these expensive toys of his... About his garage, and what's in it... I'm sure everyone would. If he wants to use his new camera to post pics of every cool thing he's acquired, I'm sure nobody will be upset...Just don't try to be clandestine about it.

I'm sorry, but in my moments of weakness, I sometimes feel compelled to react to displays of crudity.

As for your camera, Dripsnot, I'm sure it'll be just great. I've owned a digital camcorder that was $700 and it worked well. I'm sure a still camera of the same price, especially a Canon, will be more than sufficient for whatever it is you want to do.

Nice analysis but I think you're either very envious or misread my intent, The message is: I spent too damn much money in the last year (and the next 3 months) and I'm a fool for not spending alittle more for what I really wanted, a Canon Rebel. But go ahead, use the personal attacks on the name, continue your obvious-jealous state, I've got a pretty thick skin, you have to on this BBS.

Not sure what I'm supposed to be envying, here, except maybe your bulletproof sense of self-satisfaction, which truly is a gift. As far as material possessions and socio-economic standing go, I think I'll stay on my side of the tracks for the time being--at least until I get out of school. Thanks though.

Neubob, I've just read his posts with that voice of Robin Leech (Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous) now.  Makes it much more humorous.

Your analysis is spot on.  For being so, he'll cry "PERSONAL ATTACK" or claim envy.

I just find it sad.

I didn't exactly grow up wanting for much, and I want even less now, but when this kind of thing rears its ugly head it tends to put things into stark perspective for me.

If such stupid people can make buckets full of money, then what really is the value of money?

If money values Ripsnort, and I value money, then what does that say about my values? It's often a good reality check for me.

Even though it probably doesn't apply here (what's the pay scale for Rip's job and his nurse wife?), it is besides the point I was making (you did quote me).

Rip,

Serious question follows.

How did you expect people to react when you mentioned how much you spent on toys?

Please answer.

Boy Aztec, your sure have it in for me.  Ooooooooh

Yea Im just out of control...worked my bellybutton off to buy a house, building a droid for a hobby...and had a chance to be in a major film as a movie extra.    So what?  Lots of people here share their hobbies, experiences and other personal news with the "group".  Not many feel they have to goad and show off much like Drippy does.

Hate me all ya want, couldnt much care, Aztec.  Dont know you nor care to

According to rip's claim that he wrote macros do his work and he spends most of his day on the internet...then yes, I do think rip probably works less than LePaul.

Dang Drunky...only you could have figured that out...couple more beers and i might have got a gun solution though. If I'm jealous of LePaul though, is he jealous of Rip?....and for gods sake imagine being jealous of Rip.

I think Rips bragging doenst do him any credit but when I see a post from him like this I imagine he is telling me and we are walking arround his truck poking the tires and talking about how long and hard he looked to get the right one at the right price.
I think Rip and I are alot alike in that way. We like to shop, like to have nice toys.
I just dont think it translates well over to a BBS where people make alot different levels of money. Rip probably works with guys that make the same kind of money as him and its no big deal to have a nice house and a few vehicles on two good incomes.

I think the thread would have been better without the list of how much money he has borrowed this year though.

Ya know what.....

I might be an arse for opening this can of worms... And it really is petty. And my suspicions are usually wrong... but it could make for some BBS fun, no matter what the outcome.

When someone (Rip) says he "earned everything he has, and wouldn't accept charity in any form"... then makes these kinds of posts, I get curious. Because most people I know don't show off their stuff. They take pains to hide it, in fact.

In the course of two years, Rip has posted pictures of his fairly large house, his new camper, his new boat, his new BMW in a carpeted garage, his two or three kids and his wife. And now, a post about 44 grand spent on toys this year, with 66 grand more to be spent by April of next.

That's alotta schwag. A hundred and ten thousand dollars on toys in basically a year and few months.

Now, I have a buddy from Ontario that went down to work at Boeing. He was making sick money. But it wasn't 110 grand on toys in a year sick money. And he didn't have a house or a family.

So.... If anyone feels like playing detective, I think we have all the clues we really need. Or a good launching point at least.

We know where Rip lives and have seen his house. Not too much work to get a reasonable estimation of its value.

We know where he works and what he does. Within some range, a salary could be figured out.

Same goes for a nurse in his town. To be conservative - use the top nurses salary.

Deduct the obvious; taxes... cost of rasing a few kids 5, 7 , 10 or close...

And what are we left with?

A one hundred thousand dollar a year toy budget, or a handout/charity/spoon, or a reasonable amount to spend on toys given all the above?

Like I said... it might be fun. Or not. I kinda saw the same type of thing done on AGW and that sure was fun. Maybe because through all Rip's attempts to get noticed this way, it's about time he got noticed.

Ahhh..... probably. Ya never know.

$110,000 on toys in a year is one of three things - no matter what....

1) A result of a handount despite claiming you haven't received one.

2) A lie.

3) Actual earned/spent income resulting in some very lame internet BBS boasting when, at this particular moment in history - losses, sacrifices et al -  that kind of boasting is rather thick.

Take yer pick.

Personally I enjoyed Rip's boat pics, even if he never did answer my trim tab question, and I admire the fact he's proud enough of his family that he posts pics of fishing trips, soccer games or KKK marches with his kids.

The carpeted garage is over the top, but when I asked him about it privately he said he likes to wrestle the newspaper boy, so it all makes perfect sense- here in Sunny California we're able to wrestle our newspaper boys out in the back yard.

Sometimes the best response to a thread might be no response at all, especially after the thread has been whistled dead. Now it's a personal foul, and that's a fifteen yard penalty.

Here's another suggestion. Take that $500 and hire a private investigator to find the midwife that helped bring you into this world. It's about time somebody told her that you slap the newborn on the butt, not on the head, and definitely not with a closed fist.

medicboy... that is a great house with great open spaces... you might want to invest in a new camera tho because there is some sort of white blur crap over most of the picture.

as for rips new garage.... I would love to have one... mostly (90%) of the time I see really neat garage/shops I realize that the person who owns it is the least likely to have any use for it.
