Title: New Omega ATI Drivers work great for Animated Water
Post by: MOSQ on December 08, 2004, 12:47:44 PM
I posted this is in the Hardware forum but thought it should be here too:

The latest Omega ATI drivers (12-3-04) run Animated Water with NO frame rate reduction, which seems to be the biggest gripe about that feature.

Best suggestion is to get a faster video card in all honesty.
Failing that make sure you play with AA disabled in the video drivers and in AH set the video settings to lower quality and probably use 256 textures.

I agree with everything Cavalier said.  Not only should AA be disabled, but make sure AF is too. Try running at 800 x 600 with 16 bit color.

You didn't mention what CPU/Mobo you have, which has a bearing on how far you would go with a better video card, but that's probably the single best thing you can do. The 9200SE needs to go to a non-gaming computer.

You can trade in your 9200se to ATI for a 9600 XT. You pay $169 up front to ATI for the 9600, and when you mail them your 9200 they send you back $50. Total cost $119 plus shipping.

But if you have a Celeron 1.4 Ghz cpu, then there's not a lot you can do until it's time to upgrade the whole shebang.

ok here is my system specs

Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)
System Manufacturer: American Megatrends Inc.
 Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2000+,  MMX,  3DNow, ~1.7GHz
Memory: 256MB RAM
Card name: Gigabyte RADEON 9200SE (Omega 2.5.97)
Manufacturer: ATI Technologies Inc. (Omega 2.5.97)
Display Memory: 128.0 MB
Sound card: Turtle Beach/santa cruz

and i cant turn AA or AF off...can only set it to app pref
I get only about 30fps in tower and maybe 50 over water but in battle im lucky to get 12
seams to me this card should be better

The SE version of any card is the neutered version of the base card.

For instance the 9200 SE has a core speed of 200 and memory speed of 333. But the 9200 standard has a core of 250 and memory of 400. On some cards they disable the pipelines to create the cheaper card. That's why the 9200SE cards are $45 at Newegg and the 9200 is $95.

With your CPU a 9600 Pro or 9600XT would be a good card. Any more than that would need a more powerful CPU and newer mobo. The trade in deal above would be a good deal.

That 256mb ram isn't going to help you either, especially running Windows XP.
IMO XP itself reqires closer to 512, I know MS says less, but they would.

I just put in a 6800GT vid card. Fuggin awesome!!!!!!!!
