Title: Another T-34A down due to wing failure
Post by: CMC Airboss on December 08, 2004, 01:17:26 PM
I wonder how long before T-34A/B Mentors lose their airworthiness certification.  Texas Air Aces lost another T-34A Mentor due to wing separation.

Sad day - that's my favorite ride.

It doesn't have ejection seats?

No ejection seats in T-34's.  The forward and aft canopies can be jettisoned in flight.  The crew is supposed to be wearing parachutes for aerobatic flights.

No, it's only a small plane similar to a Bonanza.  And it was owned by a civilian so it can't have an ejection seat even if one was available.

civilians can have ejection seats, its just usually cost prohibitive.

cost and weight prohibitive.  Supposedly these poor bastards were only 1000 ft high.

I can't think they were performing high g manuevers that low.  The plane was said to have had a used barron spar replacement, which is suppoed to fix the forward spar from failing.  The rear spar could now be the problem.

T34s might be getting a bit cheaper soon.

Is true shame and the second T34 to lose a wing in a year or so.  The owner of Texas Air Aces was killed in the first.

and condolences to the familys.

Nice those are the C models, PT6 turbine upfront give it a much longer nose.

A and B models had Continentals and most put in Lycoming IO540s.
