That all the after all the monies spent on a top line computer, the joysticks and throttle controls, and extras like trackIR, ect..not to mention all the software you use to "fly" around in a virtual world -
you could've taken all those monies and gotten a real pilots license or even a sports pilots licencse?
Food for thought :)
-
but you couldnt shoot anyone
-
Sure you could. The question would be can you evade capture?
-
Hmm...and have some of these kiddies in here turn out like the one that crashed his aircraft into an office building to protest the war in Afganistan. All thinking they can just reup another at a fiendly airfeild.
:D

Not really, because once you set everything up you don't pay anymore ( not counting pc upgrades that maight need to happen every so many years).
Once you get your PPL, your not done spending. Every time you fly you are spending.
So yes maybe some could have gotten their PPL but they might not be able to rent or buy a plane after that.
Also some that fly in the sim, might hate flying for real. The radio work, the weather, the traffic, navigation, FAA, and on it goes.
Don't get me wrong, getting my PPL was the best thing I have ever done and a dream come true but it's not for everyone.

My neighbors would be so po'd if I added a plane to all the other toys parked out front.

thats why i am EXTREEMLY hesitant to even look into a PPL. i have absoultly no interest in navigating by beeps around the Milwaukee airport.
i just want to go to the country side and fly around looking at trees and hills.

2 things...one
it costs a min of 5K $ to get PPL
two...if you spent 5K4 on your computer..you are a moron

One thing I have been a little interested in is ultralights. I see a lot of people out exploring the desert in them, always thought that looked like fun. Until the engine cuts and you've wandered miles from nowhere I guess.
How much does it cost generally to hangar, insure and maintain a plane?
Wide open question I know, but what's it probably start at? I see little planes for 60k-70k that look nice enough to my uneducated eye, but what about all the other costs that go along with it?
-
New sports pilot license is about 1/2 of what it cost to get a PPL.
From what I've seen - most PPL cost around $3-5k depending on school

Forgot the cost of the plane, gas, maintances and the possibilty of mechanical failure and death.
I'll stick with virtual flight... I can always reup.

Cost of planes - Anywhere from 20K for a Cessna 152 - 120MPH cruise, burns 6 gals and hour and holds 24 gals.
Piper Warrior 45K and up, performance is a little faster than 152 with better range.
Bonanza - Sweet ride - 50K to 250K average one does 180MPH cruise, burns 12 to 14 GPH, holds 60 gals.
Check out Barn Stormers (Planes for Sale) (http://www.barnstormers.com/cat.php)
Fixed costs vary for plane and location. Tie down out side can run 50 to 200 bucks. Hanger space 150 to 600 bucks a month.
Maitenance an be expensive. Everything has to be done by and FAA approved Mechanic and any parts have to be FAA certified. You cant just go out and buy a radio shack switch, so things are expensive.
Every year the plane goes through an annual inspection. Mechanic tears down and inspects everything. Normall just for the inspection you can spend 1K to 3K bucks, if anything is wrong it can get really expensive.
Then there are TBOs. Times Before Overhauls. Every engine has a specific recommended TBO. After that time you have to remove the engine and send it out to be taken apart and rebuilt. Some engines have a TBO of 2400 hours, some have a TBO of 1200 hours. Overhauls can cost anywhere from 12k to 40k depending on the Engine and the plane.
Insurance can run anywhere from 1k to 2K up to 10k a year depending on time in type and total hours.

Hafta disagree with you there, bro.
Ground school: $250.00
Books: $150.00
Headset: $90.00
Airplane rental (55 hours at $62.00/hour) $3575.00
Instructor (35 hours at $22.00/hour) $770.00
TOTAL $4835.00
That was what it cost to get my Private Pilot's license. The plane rental fee at my (then) airport was low, most c-172 rental rates are in the $75.00/hour range.
My current computer cost me $1200, I have a $100 thrustmaster setup, pedals would cost $300, a CH setup another $400, so let's say I could get into a high-end system for $3000 total, including everything. And AH doesn't have an insurance cost associated with it.
shubie

My RL flyin crap over the years has outspent the virtual by tenfold. But I'm gunna spend more on virtual now, at least the amount I'd have to spend to get current in the real world.

Man Shubertt - I feel for you. When I got my Private License (1976...) I got a deal thru a flying club for $499. Times have really changed! What year did you get yours?
I fly AH 'cuz when I mounted the 20mm gondolas under the wings of my Cessna 172, they just cut way down on my fuel consumption - not to mention what the vibration from the recoil did to the airframe....
-
LOL furball! exellent hijack! :)
-
And last but not least.
When I want to fly I can walk into my computer room, double click on a icon, & I'm there.
Even if I did have a pilots lic, to fly in real life I'd have to wait for decent weather.
Get in the car, drive to the airport, walkaround & checklists before even firing up the engine & asking for clearance.
It can be a total whiteout outside but in AH the sky's are blue & the suns shining!
:)
While I may have spent 5k on computers over the last 12 years, it wasn't all at once.
Kind of pay as you go plan. Not to mention all the other expences detailed above.

Ahhhh, the benefits of being old. :) $34 per hour dual and $24 per hour wet. Soloed at 6 hrs, about 22 hrs dual and 40 hrs total on the money before check ride & SEL ticket.
I think rental or dual rates are cheap today considering inflation. Wages, gasoline, food, housing, cars etc. have all about tripled. An hour of dual time costs about the same as a golf lesson...
It costs about the same to get a driver's license in Japan as to get a SEL ticket in the U.S. :)
-
When I went for the PPL it was 14.95 wet with an instructor circa 1970.
But you could chase cows and jump fences and stuff. They frown on ya'ya's now.
But I had a chance to do'um. I did.

Yes Ghosth Been there done that, 5k on PC's...Yep...we just got another new one. Top of the line dell PC, a 22 inch screen monitor ...Really Cool, and surround sound.
Switching to the newest ones all the time :)
