Why AH Can't do the WWI
-
Because they have more than enough on their plates doing WW II.

Would be awesome, imagine the skins we could do! would be too much work for too little gain i should think, from HTC point of view. Especially since they will be hard at work doing TOD and updating the old planeset.
Wanna fly one of these in Ball's markings :)

Voss's Fokker DRI looks cool too

Howabout just 2-4 WWI planes for Duelling arena and for some special events??? :)

WW1 ?
please? pretty please?
Fokker D.VII for me please.

targetware.net this game will cover all theatres, still in beta testing but you can find some good fights. richovsken's skies rocks!
-
oh and give me a sopwith any day.

Pointless. There are already WW1 simulations available and their popularity is tiny.
Air Warrior and WarBirds have tried the WW1 route and both largely failed. AW had WW1 as separate arena, with WW1 planes as standard, WarBirds made Dawn of Aces as a different sim based on the same engine. Both had very small fanbase and were never worth the effort the developers put into them.
CUrrently there are two WW1 online flight simulators available. Richthofen's Skies (ex Target: Flanders) and Dawn of Aces III.

So why not fly them if you want WW1 aerial online action?

WW-I is a difficult act to pull off, and never ends up working out very well in a MMOL flight sim. There are several factors that work strongly against it.
Planes of that era are inhearently unstable, and not easy to fly. Induced yaw is a pain in the butt to fly with. They have tourque that twists the planes into the ground because the weight of the engine is 90% of the total plane weight. Spins and departures are commonplace for new pilots and so a great number get discouraged and never come back.....moreso than we have now in WWII.
There is a complete lack of parity in WWI planes. The gap between planes is huge of the course of the war, and was not at all equal at any given timeframe. Unless you use a rolling plane set, and specifically try and match 2 or 3 planes for each side (ignoring historical timelines) you get a 40 plane set that has 3 or 4 planes flown exclusively (imagine a MA with a few dozzen planes like the P40 or Hurrican mk1, plus F4u 1D, La7 and Spit MX 9......everyone would fly the few top planes and nothing else.
Any simulation worth a crap has to account for the terrible guns most planes had, along with the relativle soft nature of the target. It took lots of hits to do damage, and almost any damage was fatal as the structure or its areodynamics has very little to give without failure. TO score hits you have to be VERY close, and in the word of internet lag, that doesnt work too well. Collisions would be rampant and you would have to have them on to be at all realistic.....the whines would be endless.
Finally the planes are SLOW...and I mean Yugo, moped slow. Many of them barely cleared 100 mph (many didnt). Relative distances between airfields would therefore also need to be short as a fleas....personal appendage:D . RIght now theres 25-35 miles between many bases....in a WWI sim to maintain a similar 'drive time' youd need 5-10 miles......it looks silly when you can see the enemy taking off from his base as you take off.

Its not that it cant be done, its just more difficult than you may imagine converting into WWI.

that full canvas jacket looks fun, seems like its time has come and gone tho, im trying to get a copy of red baron 3d so i can play it with my buds at http://www.wings-of-valor.net
amazingly they are keeping this game alive.
Im part of a squad in richovsken skies and am having a ball, most of the guys there are from dawn of aces 3, there isnt a very big group of us in richovsken skies but i hear the sound of silence in doa is enough to drive you mad! that being said richovsken skies is growing in size by the week, as are its counterpart servers on in tw. come in around 6 to 12 am est and we usualy have tenutz server going. got all sorts of planes to fly!
-
LOL the jabos would have to have some sort of way to aim the bomb while dropping it out of the cockpit! :D
-
Back in the good old days I did enjoy Red Baron (the original, didnt play 3D) but WW1 just cant compare with WW2.
WW2 is so perfect for great dogfighting. For me its the ultimate. More modern combat is less about piloting skills then WW2 and more about use of electronics and other "gadgests". WW1 is to slow, requiring extream patience and is simply too hard. WW2 has the perfect combo of speed, intensity and pure dogfighting.
I can see my self flyin WW1 now and then but I really wouldnt spend any subscription money on a WW1 game.
I could see a few WW1 planes for the DA or CT but I dont see it beeing worth HTC time to make em. I much rather see ToD getting done and our current planes updated to the graphics standard of the AH2 engine.

in your dreams. ;)

give me a Sopwith Camel and you will all burn in flames!
remember, no chutes in WW1 planes :D
-
Albatros III would be my choise :)
But honestly, the slowest fights in 1914-15 monoplanes are also veeeeery nice :)
Yup, I also played RB2... (at WON net and at Kali) and a bit of the 3D with all its flight model changes in the beginning.
Even my callsign originates for RB2.

This one should arrive in the next update for Richthoven's Skies. :)

A DR1 could be fun ;-)

WW1 is my genre of choice. Wings with wires, low powered fragile crates. I love my Camel, the roar of the Hispano Suiza engine, the smell of cordite, castor oil and a burning Fokker in the morning. It smells like victory!
I tried Richtofens Skies, as usual they over model the Fokker Triplane. The real DR-1 was a death trap; poorly built, grossly underpowered, and way to slow for it’s time in combat. It’s real strengths were climb, and that it was unstable in all three axis. This made it turn so fast you could shoot off your own tail :) In the hands of a Master like Richtofen or Voss it was a terror. In the hands of your average pilot it was the kiss of death to it's pilot.
The main trouble with Richtofens’ Skies is lack of players. The FM is certainly fun :)
But Fighter Sims as a genre have a relatively tiny following compared to other types of MMOGs. And WW1 is a tiny fraction of that tiny fraction.
I think that with the limited number of players, any attempt by HTC to spend precious time and resources on a WW1 sim would probably cause their downfall. Thus I am sure that they will stay in WW2.
All in all, I will stay in AH for a long time :aok

ya, but its still just a beta, im crossing my fingers. They havent even started advertising yet.

oh, and the dr1 isnt so dangerouse in richovsken skies, the camel can bz it all day , its got 10 more mph!

Unless the DR-1 is flown by Chiggy vonRichtofen :)
The Camel can stay on top of the DR-1 in Richtofens Skies. Just keep doing Yo-yos. :aok

ya i piss em off doing those yoyos :) pulled about 30 of em before i roped berserk good eough to shoot, got to stay on the offensive or he will eat away my alt no prob.

HiTech already did a WW1 sim (DOA) for those of u that dont know ... and posted that he had no interest in doing anouther one ... sometime ago ..
-
The WB sqd I was a part of had plenty of sqd flights in DOA, and it was a blast. Prob is of course that DOA never had the numbers WB did after the novelty wore off
