Title: Bored of the Internet
Post by: Nash on December 12, 2004, 03:30:12 PM: I remember the first time I got an email ("You've got mail.".... yeah, yeah, yeah, my introduction to the internet was via an AOL disc)... I almost lost my mind it was so effing cool. Since then, various new things came along and made things kind of exciting. Goofing off on IRC, or downloading boatloads of songs.

I got to thinking about all the different things that is the Internet, and off the top of my head came up with these:

Email
IRC
Newsgroups
Bulletin Boards
Napster/Kazzaa/Bittorent
Blogs
Pron
Internet gaming
online shopping
Google/Dictionaries/Spell Checkers/Translators

So... This morning I wanted to kill some time and play on the internet, but..... I really didn't feel like doing anything. None of it appealed to me, and it seems like forever since there's been some new fun thing to do.

Like, what's the latest thing that's hit.... Blogs? They're cool and I read a bunch of them, but it aint all that exciting. I just have the sense that there's something out there that I don't know about. I'm sure of it... Hence the reason for this post.

1) What kinds of things do you do when you tool around on the net?

2) For nostalgia's sake - what internet developments am I missing off my list above?

web crawler search has a video search option thats alot of fun too ... (but you better have a good secure set up , AE Mozilla )

old comics from bt, foul mouthed and cynical games critique, amateur novelists posting some fresh and nice writing somewhere, browse comments about your favourite movies at imdb, 1000 post extreme flamewars about any silly non-event on an obscure forum... Learn about WWII, Age of Sail history, RC planes, politics, virtual communities, game developement...

Heaven for the attention deficit disorder junkie!

Of course there are times when you are just sick of it all, I tend to use those for getting some work done, actually paying attention to the wifey or socializing.

I'm finding as of late that my ecclectic browsing habits have improved my real life conversational skills. My coworkers expect eagerly the coffee break so I tell them what kind of weird stuff I found last night :D

Post by: NUKE on December 12, 2004, 10:24:28 PM: Yeah Nash, I hear what you are saying. I've been through many of the same cycles on the net too and now it seems like there is nothing that amazingly fun or intriguing about any of it.

When I look back on it all, the most fun I have had on the net is when I can interact with other people.....weather in games, email, bbs and etc...

Right now I have reached a "boring" period as well.
One thing that keeps getting better, in my opinion, is the information and knowledge available on the net. Even though there is a lot of garbage......there is also a lot that can be learned.

When I was a kid, I loved to look up stuff I was interested in at the library. The net is kinda a source like that for me now.
