That'll learn em to imrovise. (http://www.kentucky.com/mld/kentucky/news/nation/10401608.htm)
can you believe it. They got a new CO, he heard rumours of it and prosecuted. Unbelievable.
-
Half the US army from ww2 should have been jailed....
-
Seems the Army is primarily concerned with them erasing identification numbers and trying to cover it up more than the scrounging itself.
-
The moral of the story: If you don't have the equipment, refuse to do the mission. You'll be safer, have less work on your hands, and won't have to face any consequences.
-

Exactly.

You mean repainting the bumper numbers to reflect the new unit? Hardly anything sinister there. Show me where they tried to profit personally off the action and then I'll support charges.
-
I didn't say I agreed with the Army...
-
Yeah, whatever Engine, you NAZI!!!!
-
I guess it reads the same to all of us.
They just parked the vehicles in other camps when they were done with them. Increadable. Someone needs a capping.
-
Let's see...
Guys who refuse to carry out their transport mission... not prosecuted.
Guys who bust their tulips scrounging parts to carry out the same kind of mission... prosecuted, jailed, dishonorably discharged.
Our tax dollars at work.

This would solve all those problems (http://www.io.com/gibbonsb/articles.html)

well the 1st would have to be modernized,to a point.
-
This happens frequently. Someone just wanted to be a hardass and pursue it. We lost a Humvee about a month into Desert Storm....we found it about a month later sitting 100 meters off the road. It was just a frame and an engine block.

Yeah I got to say I am pissed on that one. What a slap in the face to every Joe who does their job and more.

The Army is not pissed that these guys took trucks to accomplish their mission. In fact they would have gotten a big pat on the back for doing what was needed and the right thing.
Unfortunately, they screwed the pooch by covering it up and lying. 1000 attaboys do not add up to 1 Ahh ****!
You can bet the Army does not loose that many trucks without a reason. When that unit S4 could not find his trucks and had no good reason to explain the disappearance, the turdball started rolling. Had these reservist just said, "Hey we got the trucks, we needed them, and are still using them" this would have not have been worth mentioning except to say "Good Job on accomplishing the Mission."
As it was they lied and tried to cover it up. That is a crime in the US Army. Rightly so.

Thats war isn't it? Sad for what our troops have to do nowadays to get a dangerous mission done.
-
Thats war isn't it?
Everything up until lying about the trucks is completely kosher.
I am a soldier in the US Army in combat arms. These guys got what they deserve.

Not that I can see. They didnt sell or destroy the trucks. They seem to have salvaged them. But your the expert.

I'd be in jail.

There has to be something not printed in this story, Pongo.
I believe they did destroy the trucks. It's not clear in the story but that is what the Army charged them with. I don't see that charge being levied if the trucks simply had the bumper numbers removed.
If they were tried by Court Martial and took a Jury then they have undergone IMO one of the fairest trials you can get.

HA! Obviously you aren't very familiar with the military justice system.

Oooooo... more arguments on news articles that appear to have less than a complete set of facts. YOU GO BOYS!

Screw you, Nazi # 2!!!

HA! Obviously you aren't very familiar with the military justice system.
Umm You might want to talk to my wife about that.
She was with me when I pushed an issue I was right on, all the way to a Court Martial after being falsely accused. Rather than accept Non-judicial punishment (Art 15) I went for the big bucks. Took 3 days at trial with a Jury. In the end Justice prevailed. Not only was I "Not Guilty" but the Command went after the crooked officer who lied to get out of trouble.
He WAS my commander. I think his favourite line now is "Would you like an apple pie with your purchase, Mam?"

WTF do you destroy your own vehicles?

"Instead of taking the trucks back to their rightful owners, the first thing was erasing the identity marks and dumping them off at bases," Wicker said. "They destroyed it. They did the enemy's job. ... Those trucks could be used for other units."
"
Ya this is the worst paragraph in the history of reporting.
what did happen? It seems to say that they changed the markings and dumped them off at bases..but the CO seems to be saying they destroyed the vehicles.
What I take from the article is that they didnt destroy the vehicles. They were not charged with destroying them. They didnt return them which thier CO interperates as the same as destroying them.
The only one I see doing the enemies work is the CO. But big supprise.

Yeah...
Gotta read the whole article, they weren't punished for usingthem, they were punished for erasing the military markings, and covering up that they used them..

You have me pegged pongo.
Of course, it isn't nearly as glamorous to quote a fact devoid news article and issue scathing diatribe based on it. You should move to the U.S. You'd make a great democrat.
-
Congrats Mini. You managed to make another thread about you, and your well on your way to rythmic chanting about Kerry.
Congrats. You have added your usual value.
-
Hey! Scuzzy, you see that?
Mini said "scathing diatribe"
My momma would smack me for that kind of talk.

Actually... you made it about me. Congradulations.
And... to be honest... this thread wasn't really much to begin with. But then, you knew that.
-
Right.

Birt, a former chief warrant officer, and the others were charged with theft, destruction of Army property and conspiracy to cover up their crimes. Birt said he and two others pleaded guilty and the other three were convicted. All received six-month sentences.
I think this is what the Army is up in arms along with lying about it to cover it up.
This charge makes me think they did destroy the vehicles as the Commander states.

Yup I felt sorry for these guys right up until I read this line:
"Instead of taking the trucks back to their rightful owners, the first thing was erasing the identity marks and dumping them off at bases," Wicker said. "They destroyed it. They did the enemy's job. ... Those trucks could be used for other units."
And you have to do something really fluffied up (or refuse Art.15/NJP) to get a courts martial.
-
the problem is that by recycling these abandoned vehicles they really put a cramp in the ability of some contractor to make a buck replacing them.
had they not cut into someones profits they likely would have had no problem.

nope its the fact that they covered it up and lied about it
