So, I can go to Blockbuster - rent a movie for about $4... not return it, and it's mine?
Awesome.
Nevermind, I think they'll try to nail me with the full cost of the movie the next time I go back. Damn.

Stopped going to BB cause I could return a movie on time and still get charged a late fee.
The person behind the counter would refuse to give you proff of returning the video when you handed it to em in the store as well.

I believe the same owner of blockbuster owns Domino's pizza. He's always got the pizza biz to fall back onto. ;)

In 2002, Blockbuster reported that 22% of its earnings were in late fees paid.
We switched to Netflix 2 years ago, and haven't been to BB since.

Die, cockbluster, die!

Blockbuster and AOL can have grave plots side by side. :D
Since I got digital movies on demand through my cable provider, I haven't been back to Blockbuster.

" The operating income forecast for 2005 excludes initial marketing and start-up costs for the no late fees program.
A customer will have a one-week grace period after a rental due date. If a movie or game is not returned during that week, it will be automatically sold to the customer. If the item is then returned within 30 days, the customer can get a credit to his account."
Actually thats a very good system imo.
I dont usually rent movies, but when I do i rent those that i missed seeing in theaters almost a year ago.
Im not a great movie watcher and only go to the theaters when an exceptionally good movie comes out (aka LOTR)..the rest i just pass by and rent whenever i have the odd feeling to rent movies (like once every 4 months lol).
But many times I go to BB or other stores and find the movies id like to watch under a 3 day return policy.
And with stuff in life sometimes you cant watch it that night or in the 2 days after so i end up watching it on the 4th day and returning it on the 5th.
Late fee.
I go less and less to rent movies because of it. Heck i even downloaded movies from the 'net because id rather watch them in my schedule even at low quality picture than to pay a late fee.
But now if BB does this no late fee thing you can bet im gonna go rent me some of them anime movies and oldie films ive wanted to watch and knowing i have a good amount of time to return it.
Perhaps i should get a free pizza with them too ;) :aok

The BB late charge would be fine until the store managers start playing with the return times to increase revenue...They use the late fees to increase bonus.... And you cant argue with them...

is netflicks that cool and doing that much business?

Netflix is great. Wife and I had it for about a year now I think. Got to watch many DVDs that I wouldn't buy because I knew I would only watch once. Espeicially series DVDs.
Mr. Bean
Are You Being Served
Robotech
Married with Children
Sex in the City
Etc.
Not to mention all those old movies that I couldn't be bothered trying to find on Blockbuster shelves. And if they don't have the movie I want, I don't have to remember to get it next time, it just some as soon as they have it again.
Netflix too is now feeling the pressure of competition though. It was not too long ago that I recieved an email stating that they were going from $19/month to something like $22/month. They attributed this to increased costs, etc. Funny that the day after Amazon.com said they were going to do DVD the same way as Netflix, I got another email from Netflix stating that they were reducing rates to $17/month. I guess the cost increases were not so much that they couldn't afford to drop their rate $5/month.

gotta love the torrents. Never a late fee. A more selection than netflicks and there popular movie only library.
-
Satellite TV pretty much killed the movie rental biz. Those without cable access made up the majority of their market. For about what you paid for 10 movies a month, you can have 1000+ to choose from. Now along comes NetFlix, WalMart online and others to fill the gap.
Before long the "Video Store" will face the fate of the drive in movie.

Netflix "popular movie only library"? You either must have been using a different service, or you're talking out your ass.

Actually, I believe that after a week after the due date, you'll be charged the full price for the movie. I.E. You keep it you bought it.
Hollywood video has always treated me perfectly and fairly. I'll use them whenever they're available.

You aint alone.
I refuse to go to blockbuster anymore for that exact very same reason.
One hell of a scam they run there

I've used hollywood video since I gave up on blockbuster about 3-4 years ago.
cheaper and better all the way around plus for $9.99 a month you can also have free rentals on anything thats been out for 6 weeks +.
it's the only store I go to unless I want to see an obscure video that is hard to find, for those we have 'Movie madness'. they stock every movie I've wanted to rent, even old tv shows.
