It's really very simple. It's holding a judge to a higher standard of behavior both on and off the bench. Since the same type of situation is applied to other public officials I don't have a problem with him being sanctioned. Why should a judge be exempt? I think the sanction might have been a bit severe for a one time "offense" especially since the article didn't even claim an offended third party.

I would apllaud such a decsion by the LA suprreme court had this incident actually happrened, however, seeing as this story is sourced from Faux news I simply refuse to belive it until it is relayed to me by Dan Rather or the NYT...

BTW Red Tail, you being the librul type and all arent you surprised that evil republican racist Focx news even shows this story?

No, I actually watch a lot of programs  on Fox news channel...I watch and read as many different news sources as I can, since not one entity should be a sole news sourse, if you really want to know the whole story.

Pooh, are you comparing a judge to the Wayans brothers? One is a representative of the court system, the other are actors, who no one should take seriously.

As for Lazs...I hope you didnt trip over your own two feet on your mad rush into this thread :lol

The justices agreed Ellender did not mean to insult blacks. Nevertheless, they ordered him to take a sociology course "which will assist him in achieving a greater understanding of racial sensitivity."

Ummm shouldnt that be enough.

He didn't intend to but he MIGHT HAVE but there was no ill will or malice there BUT SOMONE MIGHT BE OFFENDED.

This is BS!

They have some elements of truth...I can't really watch or listen to NPR for an extended period of time, either. I can do without all the shouting and childish BS, but some of the stuff is digestable.

If you wore something like that, it wouldn't matter, as I wouldn't expect much more from you, since you're a commoner, like all of us.

but if you were a general, or someone who society holds in a higher regard, then the penalty should reflect that. he should have known better.

If a principal of a school, a priest, or president of a llarge college went to the same costume party as our CIC or CINCPAC in an insulting or derogatory way, would you feel the same way?

6 months is fair, he can sit home and think about things, maybe even sew  his own Uncle Ben's costume for next year's event.

Indeed big brother is watching.
That is total bullcrap.
What he did on his own time is his buisness.

Now that being said what he did was a huge slap in the face to all african americans.
To say the it was in bad taste would be an understatement.

Not if you're a public figure, Dingbatt. You are "on stage" 24-7, and subject to public scrutiny in anything you might do- if anything I'm more incredelous over the football coach who got fired for partying with strippers...at least he's not sentacing people to prison.

Hey Clinton got away with it.
And if you read all of my post you would have seen that I agreed with you I thought it was wrong of him to do it.

UW coach was fired for putting money on a basketball pool. Of course if you work for the University of Washington, you are technically a state employee.  Not sure about Washington State U though, is that a state college?  If so,  and you're using their traveling expense for strippers, then there is a good reason for firing...

well.... I think we have to realize that some of our minorities are much more sensitive than the rest of us and must be protected from any teasing.   No punishment is to great to offset the anguish they may feel over a person in blackface say..

equality can only come when we realize that blacks need to be treated differently than everyone else.   It is still ok to go as a viking and maybe spiderman tho.... not sure about indian chief or (for the women) french maid.

it can be a little confusing but fortunately there is a veritable army of the PC around to help us by being outraged.

Actually, he wasn't fired. They just  recinded the offer of the contract that he had yet to sign. He'd been sitting on it for months...
